Fantastic Four (the new one) - What the hell happened there? Thought it was going well enough then it's like the director said "Hey we forgot about Dr. Doom, quick bring him back, let's say he's...I don't know telekenitic and stuff and uhm...let's have him try to destroy the world because he actually never tries that in the comics and uhm...let's have him beat the FF individually because that's obligatory and er...let's have them unite and beat him...again obligatory. AND LET'S DO ALL OF THAT IN FOUR MINUTES AND THIRTY SECONDS. The End"

It's a shame because, like I said, it started off well enough for an origin story.
I know some people hate comic book movies.

But most times when I watch a comic book movie not made by Marvel, they are often terrible.

Not sure I agree actually. Sony did a good enough job with the first Toby Maguire Spider Man. Fox, IMO, has killed it with the X-Men franchise; not really a bad one in the bunch (okay the Wolverine solo movies were meh and terrible).

But for whatever reason no one seems to be able to get the FF on lockdown. Again I thought this one started off well done but then it just became...rushed and sloppy. I hope they finally let it revert to Marvel so we can see if they can bring them into the existing universe.

Never read the comics enough to know that when I saw the movie.

uhm...let's have him beat the FF individually because that's obligatory and er...let's have them unite and beat him...again obligatory.
If they could beat him individually then there would never be a need for FOUR of them and Dr. Doom wouldn't have made it past issue #1. Stands to reason they DO need to unite to beat him.

The Man Who Knew Too Much (1934) - 6.5/10

One of my least favorite Hitchcock.

The style is still Hitch but the tension building goes on too long, the comedy is a little out of place, and I didn't find the story too interesting.

Yeah...I think you may be missing the point. I did say that the uniting to defeat Doom was obligatory my real problem with it was that they tried to pull the entire process off in under 5 minutes when good story structure dictates it occur at the end of act 2 and resolve at the end of act 3.

FTR Doom isn't some kind of nihilist who wants to destroy the world. Rule it? Absolutely. Destroy it? No. He's actually quite pragmatic. They really dropped the ball on him in this one. At least in the last FF go round they came closer to getting Doom right, even if they effectively just carbon copied the Willem Dafoe/Green Goblin from Sony's Spider Man. Another thing I don't understand is why they try to give Doom super powers in these FF movies when in the comic books he is effectively an evil Iron Man. He is a super genius who built super armor to give him power but underneath the armor he is just a horribly disfigured dude. It seems odd that in the last two incarnations they went against that, particularly with the success of Iron Man.

And I apologize to everyone who hasn't seen the new FF for not spoiler tagging my comments to this point, my reasoning is an assumption that everyone realizes the basic plot points they should expect and that I am not giving any actual details specific to the film.

If I was going to complain about details I would say things like:

They really didn't do a very good job explaining what Reed was trying to accomplish when he was away from the team for a year. I personally understand that he was looking for a way to "fix" Ben but they really glossed over it
or

They really didn't explain that Reed's suit, which he wasn't wearing when he escaped the military facility, helped him control his powers so when Doom wrecked his suit...again what a weird power set to give Doom just lazy IMO...and Reed effectively turned to jelly it was a little confusing.
or, to a lesser degree

Why would Thing head butting Reed knock Reed out? He's made of rubber, I'm pretty sure a brute force impact approach would be horribly ineffective

Channel flipping through HBO the past couple days I have now watched V for Vendetta twice this week.

I really enjoy this movie. Alot. Didn't appreciate it enough the first time I saw it.

The studio and the director had a falling out and they basically fired him halfway through. The mess that resulted was them trying to recoup their losses.

San Andreas was a fun ride. I'm guessing it was an awesome imax movie.

D'Addario is sexy as hell. But the middle aged guy in me was loving the mom just as much.

Did not know that. Real bummer for me because it wasn't so bad and it had some potential. Waste of a good cast too.

Not a good movie. Needed a better villain.

Big fan of Carla Gugino.

Not a movie and I've posted about it before I'm sure, but The World Wars on the history channel is the best thing they've ever done and is a close to perfect review of those times and events.

The way they tell the story through the eyes of a few key guys, the acting in the dramatized parts, the pacing, the music, the added tension, the historical footage all together are perfect. Can't give this series a high enough score.

Saw the latest Bond flick.. Really :oldunsure: how to feel about it.. They seemed so concerned in wrapping up the story line in case Daniel Craig doesn't come back that it seemed like they crammed a lot in..

going into this 4th one of this reboot I had it Skyfall>> Casino>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>quantum..

I'll Put this after Casino.. Skyfall>>Casino>>>>>Spectre>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Quantum

It's possible Spectre could move up closer to Casino, but that is my thoughts right now.

So....the new Bond movie is enormously disappointing. The entire production was bleh.

Not that anyone cares, but I guess I would rank the Craig 007 films:

1. 2008 Quantum of Solace (my favorite of all time)
2. 2006 Cassino Royale (my second favorite of all time)
3. 2012 Skyfall
4. 2015 Spectre

 on the bold part..

While I didn't "Hate it" as much as many others did, I did find it to be the worst of the 4.

1. Skyfall - Really enjoyed it from start to finish

1a. Casino .. Just as good as Skyfall

3. Spectre ... IMO, felt they were afraid Daniel Craig wouldn't return for a 5th so they tried to hard to wrap up all the story lines from the previous 3 and forgot to make a movie.. ;)

4. Quantum .. Was underwhelmed in the theather, but still bought it thinking a 2nd watching would make it better.. It did not..

If you like Quantum of Solace that much, I'm fairly certain that we won't agree on Spectre.

I don't get the hate for Quantum of Solace. I enjoyed it.

Anyhoo. The Peanuts Movie was much fun. Kids loved it. Snoopy's parts were extremely funny.

Prometheus - 2/5

I thought the hate was unreasonable until I watched it again. Visually it's awesome but then there's everything else...

Nightcrawler - May be my favorite film from 2014. Great acting, interesting story and it did a masterful job dancing on the edge between disheartening drama and outrageous satire. Three thumbs up.

Took my boy to see it opening weekend. He knew nothing about Peanuts but he had a good time with it. He loved Snoopy and Woodstock.

People, places, things. Also saw This Isn't Funny.

Both quirky, melancholic romantic comedies well worth watching. 4/5 for both.

Brooklyn.

One of the most gorgeous movies I've seen in a long time. Lush.

Saoire Ronan is all grown up now and stunning. In for a huge career.

Story is solid but a little soft. Could see this one getting a lot of Oscar noms.

A romance and kind of historical. Good for anyone over 12. Irish and Italian grandparents will really enjoy it. Good choice this weekend.

8/10

I liked it but I think it could have been better. I was hoping for a "The Verdict" type quality production but this was far from that good.

It was a little bit of a strange cast. As with any "Boston based" film you end up with a handful of actors going in and out of bad New England accents.

Mark Ruffalo and Stanley Tucci were really good.

There is a scene where Len Cariou shows up on screen and my wife and I immediately looked at one another and said "ugh....not this guy".

Good subject matter for a movie. Satisfying movie. That's all.

Exodus: Gods and Kings

Interesting. Also Sigourney Weaver playing the mother of Ramses. What?
Agree that it was interesting, in concept, but the execution just plain missed for me and I found myself almost bored. I preferred Noah for my recent Wrath of God epic movie. It was only okay and definitely preachy at times (vegetarianism? really Darren?) but I found it visually more interesting and enjoyed it more.

I liked the first Maze Runner- silly, but it worked. The second one (which I caught on an airplane) is just silly. but, hey- zombies.

Trading Places

What can I say? One of the best comedies ever made, and infinitely rewatchable.
It is except no matter how many times I've watched I still get slightly confused on the "we get rich they get poor" part..

I assume they purchased orange shares the day before at the "low" price.. waited for the price to go up and then sold the shares they had purchased cheap the day before..

Then, once the price had dropped like a rock, they started buying again.. I assume the overall selling by others was out doing their purchasing and thus the reason the price kept diving?? :whoosh:

I was wondering how that would work. I am forwarding this to my brother in law. He's a financial planner, and I bet he'll have a good answer.
