Fast forwarded through most of Baby Girl just to see what the hype was about.

No way this crap happens in real life. Is this really what my wife wants??

I wouldn't put The 39 Steps in the upper tier of Hitchcock movies but it was a fun, entertaining adventure. The 2 leads had some great interactions, especially when handcuffed together. Robert Donat's carefree attitude throughout gave it a much lighter feel and the Music Hall scenes, especially the final one wrapped the mystery up nicely.

I can't say enough about how much I loved The Maltese Falcon. I can't believe I never watched this before after hearing about it my whole life. Incredible dialogue throughout and some unexpected laugh out loud moments. "you always have such smooth responses" "what do you want me to do, learn to stutter?" I had to rewind that one. And Peter Lorre was great. I'm definitely going to have to look into more of his work. A classic Ren and Stimpy line was basically pulled right from the scene when Lorre was yelling at the fat man about screwing everything up. No scene was wasted, the movie flew by at a great pace. I first perked up when Bogey started making out with his partner's widow. I was like "where did that come from!" Definitely set a tone for his character. So many twists and turns. Only found out afterwards that this was Huston's directorial debut making it even more impressive. This has been my favorite one of my recent movies and since I liked Key Largo so much too, I'll be starting Sierra Madre next.

The only other movie where Bogart and Lorre appeared is Passage to Marseille (1944). It's not as good as Casablanca or The Maltese Falcon but it's still worth a watch for its great Warner Bros. contract cast and a flashbacks within flashbacks within flashbacks structure that adds to the narrative.

And speaking of flashbacks, I finished watching the Todd Haynes remake of Mildred Pierce (2011) on the recommendation of @Ilov80s. I didn't love it as much as he did but there was still a lot to like starting with an outstanding cast headed by Kate Winslet and Guy Pearce and a gorgeous sun drenched depiction of 1930s LA that reminded me of Chinatown.

The script followed James M. Cain's book rather than the 1945 movie which was required by the production code to punish the adulterers. Because of this, the new version got rid of the flashbacks from the movie which I thought diminished the suspense and mystery. The TV series played out in a linear narrative with one big gap where Mildred's business booms and Veda grows up and transforms from a child actor to Evan Rachel Wood.

My biggest issue was pacing. The series was almost seven hours which seemed too much to tell a relatively straightforward story without a lot of characters. Haynes isn't an action packed director to start with but everything here was very leisurely and my interest lagged at times. Even with the long length, I thought the ending felt kind of rushed because it kept focus on Mildred while Veda was doing most of her conniving off screen.

Re-watched Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri for the first time since seeing it in the theater.

For my money, not the greatest story, but the characters and performances make it worth watching.
Frances McDormand and Sam Rockwell just make you sit up and pay attention every second they're on screen.
And there's this character actress named Sandy Martin (she plays Rockwell's mother); she's brilliant!

I recorded it off of TCM last week but haven't watched it yet (because I'm trapped in a month of tv series). I'm curious to see how Martin McDonagh tackles America.

I enjoyed The Treasure of Sierra Madre well enough. It still holds up very well, has a great storyline and solid acting for the most part. I could have done without the laughing off what happens at the end. Seemed weird. I think I've just been into the thriller/noir/crime dramas that I've been getting exposed to and a western didn't scratch that itch. Glad I watched it though.
And the bandito never actually says "we don't need no stinkin' badges" wtf!

I’m curious what you think. I absolutely despised that movie.

Greenland on Prime. I enjoyed this considerably more than I thought I would. For an end of the world disaster movie they focused only on regular old human stuff, no massive special effects like 2012 just a father and his family. Even the dramatic and violent parts were....kinda real? In a Hollywood way.

Eh, like I said. Emjoyed it.

Then I watched Damsal on Netflix. Millie Bobbie Brown is pretty good and will probably end up being this generations Meryl Streep. The dragon wasn't too stupid. Most of the other acting was. No complaints on this one. Not a 5 star movie by any stretch but for the genre was entertaining enough.
Wife and I enjoyed Greenland quite a bit.
Oof. Just watched this last night. Awful movie. And I really like Gerard Butler too

These Final Hours (Roku): 2013, 6.6 Aussie movie.

A self-obsessed young man makes his way to the party-to-end-all-parties on the last day on Earth, but ends up saving the life of a little girl searching for her father. Their relationship ultimately leads him on the path to redemption.

Last day for everyone on earth as a fireball coats the whole planet, this guy realizes that after a life he’s not proud of, he should do the right thing. Some crazy stuff happening all over, sometimes on the edges or out of focus… even zombie movies have some hope of lasting longer, this was just a countdown with people doing whatever they felt like with no filter. I wasn’t sure how this would end, but thought they did a good job with it. Rating seems fine - this was worth watching, but not crucial.

Not sure if this goes here or in the Streaming thread but since it was a movie I decided to go with it here.

Juror #2.

I had never heard of it but stumbled upon it while poking around the Max streaming service. I thought the set up and concept was really good and could have been very interesting. It was an interesting cast with a lot of surprising people in it that was enjoyable. I think it was worth the watch but thought it could have been quite a bit better. It also ended in an interesting way that wasn't all that satisfying but I could see what they were going for.

You have to look past the fact the movie could have been over 30 minutes in had he not made such a stupid choice.

That could be said for almost any movie. I mean they have to have some of that to make a movie.

What stupid choice are you referring to? I don't think his original actions were wrong. He hits something. Gets out. Checks the car and surrounding areas. Sees nothing. Assumes it's a deer and goes on with his life. I don't see there being anything wrong with that. No bad choice there. I have been there (hit a deer) and that was in a non-rainy situation where I could see the deer. If the visibility was bad and in an area that is common for deer being hit his actions were acceptable. There was no malice or ill intentions. I wouldn't consider what he did a hit and run.

I believe Hitchcock was asked once why a character didn’t do some sort of obvious action that would have resolved all the issues early on. He said something to the effect of, because then we wouldn’t have had a very interesting movie.

Did anybody else hear Hitch's distinctive voice in their head when they read the quote?

"We Beat The Dream Team" documentary was decent for basketball fans.
Olympics Basketball 1992 when we sent the Hall of Fame stars (Jordan, Magic, Bird, Barkley, etc) to represent the USA. Story of the practice team (sacrificial lamb) college kids that beat them (the college kids all went on to the NBA and had good careers).
Never heard of it. Sounds interesting.

Watched these the last 2 nights

Companion - the guy from The Boys (Dennis Quaids kid) takes his girlfriend (the girl from that movie where the Mormon girls go to Hugh Grants) to meet his friends. Hijinks ensue.
Lotta cool concepts in this one, don’t want to spoil too much

Sorry To Bother You - a black guy uses his “white voice” to get a leg up on his telemarketer job. Hijinks ensue
This movie is like a fever dream and some absolute WTF did I just see moments
I guess it’s an allegory for capitalism or something
I was pretty baked for this FWIW
Highly recommend, had been on my list for awhile

Edit: the rap song :lmao:

The movie could have (and should have) been over after the first vote. Why he did what he did was stupid.
It kept him from being where he really wanted to be.....home. AND opened himself up for everything else that happened in the movie.

I posted a similar comment a few above yours. Go into it knowing as little as possible.

Except the guy was trying to do the right thing at the first vote which was not convict an innocent man. That was the turmoil for him.
The fact that he ended up caving at the end went against his good guy intentions and was kind of abrupt. It took away from the overall movie. This is the part where this could have been a lot better of a movie.

I am also not sure what exactly he could have done more at the time of the accident. He stopped. Looked around. Didn't see anything. He wasn't drunk. He didn't do anything wrong. The only wrong thing was not coming forward once the body was discovered. If he did I am not sure what he really would have been guilty of. A drunk lady stumbling on the road in the pouring rain in low visibility without a real walking path gets hit. Also, what did they really have on him? There was no way to prove he hit her unless there was blood somewhere up under the car. Just because he had some body work done on the car doesn't mean it was anywhere near that accident. I don't see how they could have got him for anything that much after the event if he just held to his story. So even sticking with the not guilty or hung jury I am not sure how he would have been at risk.

Fair enough.

Rewatched Michael Mann's- Manhunter (1st Hannibal Lector movie), one of my faves from that era.

Having just re-seen To Live and Die in LA, it's hard not to compare with the same era, hyper-stylized production and score and even same lead actor.

I much prefer Manhunter for the way the characters are written (holding up better), the overall look, pacing and the way action unfolds

I haven’t seen too many blaxploitation films of the 70s but just watched Black Caesar and that has to be the best I’ve seen yet. Even better than Coffey and Shaft. I am loving this James Brown soundtrack. I hadn’t realized some of these songs were just from a movie.

Across 110th Street and Trouble Man are pretty decent. The latter has a Marvin Gaye soundtrack.

Cotton Comes to Harlem is played a little more for laughs than the Chester Himes source material but it's a fun watch.

110th Street is a good movie, no matter what genre it gets assigned to and damned if that dirtbag Bobby Womack didn't make one of the best theme songs of the early '70s.

Shaft is a good movie. The weak link was Roundtree, who couldn't act his way out of a wet paper bag. On the other hand, any Top 10 list of coolest movie characters that doesn't include John Shaft walking around NYC in a black leather coat is a sham. And that shoot-his-way-through-a-window (ripped off in extremely good taste by Die Hard) is an all-time action scene.

Was looking for something to watch and saw Uncut Gems on Tubi. Been wanting to watch it for a while now and in a way I really didn't like it but that ending...so I think it was worth it.

It might be streaming elsewhere but it's expiring today on Tubi so if you have 2 hours to kill...

I don't think Bodies 3x was the worst film I've ever seen or anything. I know it was a dark comedy which are sometimes not "ha ha" funny but they did try to make some jokes but they came off as more cringe than funny. I get the ending and I could see why some people think it's great but it was just kinda aggravating to me. In hindsight I did think that maybe the true intent of the movie was to make fun of gen z and this but I'm not sure that makes it much of a better movie.

Anyways, In between 30,000 commercials for Candy Crush, I ended up watching The Impossible on Tubi. I had been putting it off for a while but I had wanted to watch it since I like Noami Watts. The content is not hard to dislike so I did enjoy it and it was pretty neat to watch Tom Holland before his Spiderman fame (was he well know before then?)

I thought it was ok but I did appreciate the humor poking fun at Gen Z

Just got back from seeing Anora and that movie was absolutely made for me. Loved it. It's like a female led Uncut Gems. It is so loud and chaotic but truly funny the whole way through. My wife and the other couple all loved it. It's a blast.
