I guess I was also just surprised at how many critics also had Max Mad very high on their year end lists.
I liked it but I don't get any of the Oscar buzz for any of the major categories.
If they can pick Birdman as Best Picture, then Fury Road deserves consideration.
Lot of hidden parallels in these two movies.
Lol.

I liked Birdman a lot.

Oh... more bewbs/butt. I probably already mentioned her upthread, but it's worth repeating: Phoebe Cates in that movie thats the desert version of Blue Lagoo. Holy wow.
Birdman had too many flaws to be a Best Picture winner. Some love it, some hate it. I thought it was a mixed bag.

Phoebe Cates? Now that might be interesting.

I can't think of too many Oscar winners I actually liked. Birdman may have had flaws but I appreciated the concept, vision and consistency and realization of both.

That Phoebe movie... Paradise? ... she is unworldly. IIRC, A there's a scene with a cave waterfall shower. Hugely worth a Google.

Ran across this link of indie and foreign films released this year. Has anyone seen any of them? I haven't but wouldn't mind a good recommendation if one or two of these really stuck out.

http://www.indiewire.com/article/the-13-most-criminally-overlooked-indies-and-foreign-films-of-2015-20151219
The only one I have seen is What We Do in the Shadows which I may place among the five funniest films of the past decade.
I couldn't make it through the movie. :bag:

You need a bigger bag.

Neither could I. Thought it was a bad Monty Python attempt at spoofing Vampires

The Big Short - well done movie. Like the in your face exposition.

On that same note, The Martian. A stupid movie for stupid people.

Not as moon as Moon, as armegeddon as Armageddon, as stellar as Interstellar, as cool as Apollo 13 or, sadly, as Ridley Scott as Aliens even though it tried badly to be all of them. Giant studioil covered turd.

But.. but... theres a book!

I didnt hate it. But agree it came across as pretty stupidly done. I wss hoping for an intellectual study of the psychology of absolute abandonment, isolation and mortality, but got Mcgyver with horribly corny attempts at humor and sorry telling instead.

I haven't seen the movie yet but, if you had read the book then you wouldn't have had those expectations.

I would have enjoyed the psychological approach, but I liked that it was purely about power of science to overcome any obstacle. Great message IMO.

Didn't read the book.
I got that. Just pointing out that because this comment you made:

But.. but... theres a book!
Yes there is a book, and it is far more MacGyver in space than a deep introspective piece on isolation and imminent death. I am not saying that you must read a book to see a film but sometimes it really helps a viewer understand what are appropriate expectations.

Watched Sicario last night. Was awesome. Going to download the Big Short for tonight. Hateful Eight is on tap this afternoon

The Wolfpack 3/5

Was very interesting but sort of flattened out for me.

Stuck in love 3/5

Truer to be unique and was but still felt cliched.

Hateful Eight:

I will go talk about it more in the spoiler thread, but I think this is at the bottom of the Tarantino list just above Death Proof. I think it was more of the same from the last couple movies in a different setting. Problem is with this one there wasn't any fantastic sequences that I saw in IB or Django or the level of performances in those two that would reel me back it from the Grindhouse slapstick and gore.

Has anyone seen the animated movie "Inside Out"? My g/f had me rent this to watch with her daughter. I'm not big on kids/animated movies (except Toy Story). Will I be falling asleep or is it somewhat enjoyable?
It's fantastic.
Yes, I enjoyed it more than I thought I would.
I couldn't get past that it's an animated rip off of Herman's Head and a few other shows.

On a sidenote- when the wife and I were at the Disney store browsing for Christmas gifts we noticed that the lead character was all sold out but they had tons of the other characters. My wife was wondering why and then I just said look at them, who wants to buy their kid the Angry guy, germaphobe/weirdo or the emo depressed girl? no wonder all the happy girl items were gone. i'm not sure they thought that one all the way through during the how can we market merchandise meeting.

Two biopics. Both movies are highly recommended.

The Imitation Game

The story of genius Alan Turing and how his team broke the unbreakable Nazi Enigma code to win WW2. Loved this movie. Benedict Cumberbatch hands in another stellar role. One of the best movies I've seen from 2014.

The Theory of Everything

The lone bright spot in Jupiter Ascending was Eddie Redmayne chewing up scenery as the villain. Here, Redmayne plays popular physicist Steven Hawking. Very good movie. Not as riveting as The Imitation Game and certainly a lower budget movie, but still absolutely worth seeing.

Sicario:

Wow. I thought this movie was great. Right from the opening scenes of the movie, it built the tension and didn't let up for 2 hours. Great performances as well. Best movie that I have seen so far this year, and probably better than anything I saw last year.

Sleeping With Other People:

I think did a much better job of sustaining the laughs and toeing the line of raunchy/funny and the romance stuff than Trainwreck. Sooooooo much better than the writer/director's other movie, The Bachelorette. I am usually 50/50 on Sudeikis, but thought he was good here and he and Alison Brie :jawdrop: had some good chemistry. The best rom/com I can remember seeing in the last couple years.

Also my personal favorite of last year. I still enjoy watching the trip to Juarez and Border Battle scenes on youtube.

Straight A's 4/5

Went in with zero expectations and really enjoyed it. First Ryan Philippe movie where he didn't #### me off.

I thought Amy - the documentary about Amy Winehouse's life was excellent. 96% on rotten tomatoes.

She was sober when she won all those Grammy awards in 2008, including song of the year. She told a friend all she could think about during the ceremony was getting loaded.

Coherence:

I thought this was a foreign movie, but that wasn't the case. Started slow, but I ended up liking it and had a lot of fun trying to figure out WTF was going on. VERY low budget movie, so be warned on that front - it was shot like a found footage movie, but that wasn't part of it. I think it was made on 50K. Not quite as good as movies like Triangle, Primer, Another Earth, Timecrimes, etc.., but it is in that same wheelhouse. I will end up watching this one again, because I am sure there is a lot of stuff going on in the background that I wouldn't have noticed the first time around.

Minions:

:yucky: Really like the Despicable Me movies, but this one was almost unwatchable for me. Imagine that, these fun side characters in movies aren't so fun if they are the whole movie - see Penguins of Madagascar movie.

Phoenix.

German pic. You either buy into premise or not. I did. Last scene one of best of year. 7.5/10

Love & Mercy.

Usually can't stand dano. Other then when he was clitsy. He and Cusack are terrific as Brian Wilson. The many scenes in the recording studio make for a great musician bio pic. This was better then I thought it would be. 7.5/10

liked Coherence as well. Thought I had it all figured out until the very end (as did the main character)

have seen Primer, but not the other movies you listed (Triangle, Primer, Another Earth, Timecrimes) and will check them out

I really thought Triangle was cool.

Considering that the budget must have been miniscule the mood they were able to create and story they told was great.

I have to remember to check out Timecrimes.

Another Earth is the least like the others - more just popped into my head because it's a low budget sci-fi/drama movie. After thinking about it, I shouldn't have listed that one and might have been thinking about a different movie.

Triangle plays more like a horror, but was still great.

IMO Primer is one of the best time travel movies ever.

Timecrimes is a foreign movie, just so people know, but it is like Primer in that people aren't going back very far in time.

I was surprised it was as much as it was - looks like 12M to make the movie. IMDB has Primer's budget at $7K  and I thought they said Coherence was $12K. That is just amazing.

Timecrimes was surprisingly good. It looks cheap but it's pretty clever.

Wow. Never would have guessed Triangle cost so much.

I thought it was very good and I rarely say this about movies but it could have used more plot. Extremely narrow in the moment focus.

Pitch Perfect:

I was maybe hoping for a little more, but still liked it. Got a few laughs out of me, but I was expecting something more like Mean Girls or Easy A the way people talk about it. Not quite to the level of those movies for me. As always Anna Kendrick is fantastically cute, and as usual I find Rebel Wilson painfully unfunny. 5/10

The Martian:

A good movie, but one that has been done before - it felt too me like Apollo 13 with Damon providing a few more laughs. Damon was great, and I really loved the spectrum of emotions that he brought to the table. I thought it dragged a little and some of the space effects (especially at the end) looked pretty damn cheesy. Worth watching, but not sure if it would end up on my best of the year list. 6.5/10

Saw The Gift.

It was pretty good. Interesting that Joel Edgerton wrote and directed it, too.
that the one with Katie's Holmes?
Jason Bateman

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt4178092/
oh- too bad. I really liked what Katie brought to her performance.
A visually stunning masterpiece.

Sorry, I mean masterpieces.
mmmmmmm corpse boobs
