Valley of the Dolls: 2.5/5. Thought it would be interesting, but so meh.

Beyond the Valley of the Dolls: 3/5. Not much better, but it had lots of boobies. Russ Meyer one upped the original in that area.Might check out more Russ Meyer films. I know they are bad going in.
Russ Meyer films are great if you like Hollywood breasts. That's why Ebert wrote the script for Beyond; he loved them, too.

Knights Tale

The Heath Ledger jousting movie. Another rewatch for me. I think this is one of those movies where I enjoyed the characters a lot more than the actual story.
I feel no shame in saying that I love this movie.
No shame should be necessary. Good entertainment every time its on.
horrible.

I couldn't stop watching, but horrible.

Spotlight - Really good. I liked all the characters, but Liev Schrieber was too understated. Even if the real Marty Baron was a super mellow guy, the portrayal could have used a tad bit more fire.

Room.

Blah.

First hour was compelling but second-half was a dumpster fire. I don't get the runaway acclaim for Larson. Decent performance in an ok movie. The kid was incredible though.

Joan Allen almost unrecognizable. Had some work done.

6/10

I didn't post up thread but while watching Transcendence it occurred to me that I am a fan of Paul Bettany and then Knight's Tale was watched next where he was entertaining as well.

Which leads to me not being able to fall asleep last night and watching Wimbeldon. As far as rom-com's go, I enjoyed this one. Probably more than I should. But Bettany is a solid actor and in looking at his IMDB page can't find a movie of his that I didn't like (of the ones I've seen). Solid actor.

I liked the movie more than you did, I'd give it a 7.5/10, but agree with the Brie Larson assessment. Not sure what she did that was so amazing.

I agree about Bettany. A good actor with good range.

He should have used the Ray Donovan character?

He is a very good actor but of the ones I have seen I think Legion and Priest were both pretty awful and Transcendence just tried too hard and failed. I heard Mordecai was an absolute trainwreck as well. Not saying they were bad because of him just that they weren't very good films.

However for me there are far more hits in his catalog than misses: Avengers, Iron Man, Margin Call, Master & Commander, A Beautiful Mind, A Knight's Tale. The Da Vinci Code was pretty mediocre to me but his character was great.

Not sure about the rest but I am happy to see him land some super hero money and hope to see him start appearing on major awards nomination lists in the future. I think he has that kind of talent.

Sicario 4/5

Pleasantly different. Felt a little long but I enjoyed it for sure. I've worked a few cartel cases from Nogales to Phoenix and Tucson so that made it additionally entertaining.

Fair enough I guess. Wasn't trying to make that a look at me.

Trainwreck 5/5 (first half) 3/5 (second half)

Right up there with wedding crashers and animal house for me as second to top tier comedies. Unfortunately like those movies the first half is insanely funny and you just sort of hang around for the second half out of obligation. I thought the celebrities in this movie were great, especially lebron and John cena. The comedic cameos were also very funny (Dave Attell, Colin Quinn, etc). Couldn't stop laughing for the first 45 minutes. Definitely worth a watch, but realize it's about an hour of amazing comedy followed by a remake of "how to lose a guy in ten days".

:goodposting:

Agree with this.. Except I have to add the last 5 to 10 minutes or so were :lmao: for the wife and I..

Keep saying this, but there is no need for these movies to approach the 2 hour mark. Most tend to drag in that last 1/2 hour or so. Agree with your take, but probably would give the 2nd half a 2/5, as I didn't dig Lebron in this.

Watched some more movies with my son:

Thor 2:

Meh. Maybe a little better than the first one? Laughed a couple times but started to zone out. Still like the Thor movies the least of the Marvel movies.

Ant-Man:

Liked a lot of the humor, and thought Rudd was good in the role. Probably would slot it at the bottom of the Marvel pile above Thor, but still liked it well enough. I think at this point the only Marvel movies that I don't have a desire to rewatch are the two stand alone Thor movies. (now that I warmed up a bit to GotG)

Kung Fu Panda 3:

It was my idea to go see this one today, as I just love the first two. (a lot more than he does). I actually had fun with the 3D and was glad that was the only showing available around the time we went, but the rest of the movie was OK. A couple laughs, but just didn't live up to the other 2 for me, and it seemed like the reviews were quite positive on this one, so maybe my expectations where a little to high.

I considered going lower, but I was influenced by my desire to have it still average to an overall 4/5, simply b/c I liked the first half so much. I haven't laughed as hard as I did during the John cena sex scene or the lebron/hader one on one game in a very long time. But absolutely. No idea why that movie was two hours. I thought it was going to end shortly after the funeral scene but it took them forty minutes t do what they could have in five and instead to drug out forty minutes of what felt to me like a reboot of how to lose a guy in ten days but without much humor until the cheerleading scene.

I liked the thor movies a lot better than the iron man or captain America movies (although winter soldier was good). Am I the weird one?

I don't know - I think a lot of people rank the first Capt America and 2nd Iron Man movies toward the bottom. But like Andy said, we like what we like.

I think I posted it a couple pages back, but you might like Sleeping with Other People. In the raunchy rom/com genre that Trainwreck is. Maybe didn't quite hit the highs on the comedy, but I thought it was more consistent and a better movie overall. Plus Alison Brie >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Amy Schumer. Looked on imdb, and they are rated the same.

Jobs - I enjoyed it. Although some complain about it I liked how they used the framework of the product launches to move the various relationship elements of the story along. Of course, all that stuff didn't happen backstage before launches, stupid people. 3/5

Our Brand is Crisis - I was surprised by this one. Really solid. A bit preachy at the end but it's a true(ish) story. 3.5/5

Black Mass - meh. Same move done a dozen times over now. Good performance by Depp as always but this was really not memorable as a whole. 2.5/5

Hail Caesar

Biannual clunker from the Coen bros. Lots of beautiful pieces and some humor never really come together and end up a thrown together muddled mess.

My most anticipated film of the year ended up the most disappointing.

2.2/5 stars and that's cutting them some fanboy slack

Trailer was awful.

They should have made the Jeremy Renner storyline one of a good soldier for Treadstone or whatever they call it. He goes on missions taking out bad guys.

Then in this new Bourne pic we have him going after Damon. So we have two characters we like going head to head.

Mrs. Dogg and I sat in a half empty theater when we saw this, and we were the only ones laughing.

I loved it.

That's disappointing.

"Brooklyn"
I don't need every movie I see to be a smart crime drama, or an action movie with lotsa bullets.
Every now and again I will go to a chick flick with my wife with no expectations but with cautious optimism that I will be mildly entertained.
Really glad I agreed to see this. Good story. Very good, and Saorirse Ronan was really great in the lead.

Most of the way through Amy. could really have used some editing- 2+ hours to tell a cliched story seems... ungood. that said- what a voice. and what a waste.

Bridge of Spies was very interesting, wish they went into the Russian spy more but excellent movie over all. 4/5

Fury was much better than I expected 4/5.

Watched A Walk Among The Tombstones again on cable.

I really like this one - dark, moody, truly evil villains, a believable lead. It's worth checking out.

Inception - Can't believe I let this stew in my "yet to watch" pile but wow. Great movie. 8.5/10

Standoff - Flicks with such small casts are sometimes "off" but this was pretty good. Why isn't Thomas Jane in more stuff? Solid 7/10.

Pixels - Such a creative concept and Sandler's always good. Fun. 7.5/10

Tremors 5 - Turned off about 15-20 minutes in. Terrible. 0/10

400 Days - Solid concept, decent acting and cinematography. Final half hour was odd and ending left you hanging, though. Watchable, but still just 6/10.

Self/Less - A few "WTH" moments but a cool (although sometimes predictable) storyline and concept. 6.5/10

Jeruzalem - Another one of those "found footage" movies... pretty neat concept but with lower budget it was hard to make it fill up. Barely watchable. 5.5/10

Solace - Excellent story and acting. Jeffery Dean Morgan is awesome. 7/10
