I haven't watched Amy so I'm kind of just being an ignorant jerk... but how a doc about that disgusting junkie won over Winter on Fire is fkd up.
Yea, total ignorant jerk.  She was super talented and a really sweet girl.  Super sad story.

I don't think the doc holds a candle to the Ukraine one in subject, production or entertainment... but Amy fits better with this years' Oscar theme of, "Us, not them".   Oh well.

Who are the us and them in this theme?

Im still needing further explanation of this... anybody?
I was comparing Amy Winehouse's glitz and glamour life to the fundamental flight for life and freedom that the Ukrainians were facing (with the thought that fighting for freedom was sort of a fundamental "black thang")

... However we can substitute the Ukraine doc for the Nina Simone documentary in my original post and then we don't need any extrapolation as to the us than them are.   Could've easily gone with diversity there... but no, had to side with that stereotypical group that runs Hollywood in Hollywood over a minority or a true fight for freedom.

Whatever though, IDGAF about the Oscars or their lack of diversity... It was just sort of the prevailing sentiment at the second I was posting so I was sort of meta responding to that vibe that is out there and not any one person... I can see how my categorizing the Ukrainian struggle as diversity might be a stretch to someone, but to me it makes perfect sense... and now I submit the Nina Simone doc since I've watched it as thats some real black ish son.

It had been quite sometime since I sat down and watched Big with Tom Hanks from beginning to end... When my daughter said she wasn't sure if she'd seen it we sat down and watched it over the weekend. .

I forgot how many :lmao: moments there are.. still funny all these years later.
I re-watched it with my kid and wife about 6 or 7 years ago.  I remember saying to my wife afterwards:  "wait, she just had sex with a 12 year old boy, right?  I'm not necessarily complaining or anything. . . . but we can agree that this just happened, right?"  She just kind of shrugged.

The Night Before:

I was hoping to laugh a bit, but was sorely disappointed.  I laughed a couple times towards the middle, but I barely cracked a smile for about 45mins until that point.  Not worth the time at all.  3/10

I have a question for anyone that rented Sicario. There was a preview of a great looking movie in the trailers, but I can't for the life of me remember what it was. Anyone remember the trailers?

TIA

Wow was this movie disappointing. Rogan had a few funny parts, but overall it was just boring. I was about to start fast forwarding there at the end just to get it over quicker.

2/10 is probably closer.

The Martian was pretty good. I'd like to look into some of the things that were done in the movie to see how scientifically accurate it was but it was overall enjoyable. How was it in the comedy category again? 2.5/5

You have a tough rating system.

You have a tough rating system.
Yeah, I was thinking 3/5 but that's usually for a movie that I would consider recommending. While I thought it was pretty good, I don't think I'd recommend it to anyone. Maybe a more accurate description is that it wasn't horrible.

Saw Big Eyes last night. Felt like a miss from Burton. Campy performances, I assume meant to evoke the campiness if the art... took away from what should have been a more compelling story. Made me wish I had seen a doc on the subject rather than the movie at hand.

Watched The Drop today.. Really enjoyed it.. I can see how it wouldn't be for everyone due to the slow pace..

But as a Character story I thought it played out very well.. sure the "who did it" was pretty well known before the reveal, but didn't matter as the story itself was well done.

I finished it without FFing, so that is a 3/10 in my system.  If I did FF like you did, it's a 2/10.   Either way you cut it, that was a ####ty movie.

What was the last good movie that Burton did?

good question... it's strange- in my mind, he's a good director... if only because of his early work. going to google and brb

eta: I liked Big Fish ok. IMO, probably his last "good movie" (2003).

fwiw- before that, I'm a big fan of Mars Attacks (96), but I'm sure I'm in the minority about that. Ed Wood is his best, IMO, although I'll always have a soft spot for Pee Wee and Beetlejuice

watched Pixar's best effort to date - "The Incredibles" - with my 6 year old son. I saw it years ago and enjoyed it back then. My boy loved it so much that we watched it again the next day.

Spy (8/10) - absolutely hilarious. Even if you don't usually don't like Melissa McCarthy, she's likable in this. Just a really funny movie, best comedy of the year so far.
Watched this last night on HBO. It was great. Jason Statham was great, as was McCarthy. Really good movie.

Yep...solid flick

The Public Enemy - 8/10

Great gangster movie. When Putty Nose is begging for his life I realized where Miller's Crossing got its inspiration for the scene in the woods.

James Cagney was great in it.

Sorry you buncha curmudgeons but The Martian was pretty much exactly as good as Apollo 13, if not better.

Not really. It was a decent movie, but it wasn't great. Maybe there wasn't enough character development or something. I remember seeing stuff happening and not really caring about it.

Agreed.

Loved everything about The Martian.
The Martian not in the same universe as Apollo 13.  Two completely different movies.  Crazy talk.

Like comparing The Edge of Tomorrow, which is really good, to Saving Private Ryan.  It's a non-starter.

:lmao:  @ age having anything to do with liking The Martian or not. It was an ok movie, not something I'll ever watch again. I liked it more when it was called Cast Away. Where you actually felt the fear and pain and emotions of the main character.

Yep, that it what I was thinking too.  I think I have all but given up on him.  It seems to be all style and no substance with him.  Just a hired gun when somebody wants to but a weird/creepy feel on a kids movie.  I haven't seen Ed Wood yet, remember being meh on Mars Attacks, but it has been 20 years since I've seen that one.  Still have a soft spot for Edward Scissorhands and Pee Wee, and loved Big Fish, but that's about it.

All that said, I still have mild excitement for Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children.  Really liked that book, and thought it was a really interesting idea.  Plus it doesn't look like Mr. Depp is in in, so I have more reason to want to see it.  If that movie isn't decent, I think the break up will be official.

Anyone here see Locke with Tom Hardy?
I loved it, as did Krista if I remember correctly from my other thread.

Honestly not sure how many people will like it though.  Think Phonebooth or Buried - the entire movie is Hardy in his car.  That said, I thought he did a fantastic job acting and I was glued to the screen.

Actually it's in the same solar system even.  ;)

What makes The Martian so much different?  Stranded astronaut(s) getting rescued.  Both movies had the rescuers and astronauts using science to figure a way out of their situations. The only main difference is Matt Damon crackin' wise.  I am in jamny's camp that thought it felt like a few other movies before it, and it was OK.

...so if people thought Apollo 13 was also an "ok" movie?  I agree, The Martian was pretty much exactly as good as Apollo 13.

Top Five:

Very uneven movie, but I liked it more times than not. When it is funny, it is really funny, but a bit of the movie is a bit bland. Still great to see that Chris Rock has something left in the tank besides movies like Grown Ups and What to Expect When You Are Expecting. 6/10
Watched this over the weekend. I thought it was pretty entertaining. Like you said, it was not great and had some dull points, but overall it was enjoyable. 6/10 is probably about right.

i really liked it. it was pretty entertaining even if it wasn't hilarious. it was a film aimed for adults...

I think that's one of the big differences.  Zero emotion in the Martian short of Michael Bay style rah rah emotion.

Creed - Meh.  #6 out of 7 in the franchise.   Didn't care about the character and the fight scenes were just not good.   2/5

Hateful Eight - Love Tarantino and can appreciate how this one was shot and the incredibly rich back stories of all the characters but the movie itself was pretty slow and I didn't feel the suspense the way he brought it in Inglorious Bastards, which is what he was trying to do, I think.  I also think that he thought by creating deep back stories for everyone he was adding depth to the film but it didn't come across. 2.5/5

Weird, I actually did care about the characters in Creed.  I'd put it just below #3 (so 4 out of 7).

And I'd give H8 3.5/5.  I thought all the characters were pretty interesting and it felt "authentic" to me.  I enjoyed it.

I'll likely never watch Hateful Eight again.  I feel like there's nothing left there for me.  Similar for Creed.   Almost any other Rocky movie except V, I get sucked in to watching again -TNT, or whoever has been doing the marathons recently, has been playing me like a fiddle.   I likely won't watch Creed again.

Thanks for the reply.

I enjoyed buried, haven't seen Phonebooth (will add to my list).

Whiplash (8.9 - 10). Loved this movie mainly for Simmons. I thought the movie overall was very good, but Simmons stood out for me. I'll never watch another Farmers insurance commercial without thinking of him waving his hand and telling everyone to eff this or eff that or eff everything.
