Straight Outta Compton
Loved this movie from start to finish. Excellent.

Haven't seen this yet, but he played a Nazi in the HBO series OZ - and I imagine that's even more hardcore than Whiplash.Whiplash (8.9 - 10). Loved this movie mainly for Simmons. I thought the movie overall was very good, but Simmons stood out for me. I'll never watch another Farmers insurance commercial without thinking of him waving his hand and telling everyone to eff this or eff that or eff everything.

Watched this last night with the Mrs. This is the movie for those of you who are looking for that something different than the usual studio fare. If you've ever complained about there being no original movies then this should be up your alley. As nightmare points out, the pace is slow yet steady and add to that the acting by Rollins is deadpan, but it all works perfectly for this story. And there is a bit of a 'moment' that even if you see it coming, brings the poignancy to a new level. He Never Died. Stars Henry Rollins. Low budget, quirky story of a man who
can't be killed trying to live a simple life. Complications arise when he finds out
he has a daughter. If you liked After Hours you would like this. Some violance
and low level gore. This is not a fast pace or "actiony" mode of movie some of
you might be into. You might have more questions then answers at the end of this
one.
Heard a critic summarize the new Star Wars perfectly: this is the movie that says, "Don't worry, it's going to be ok. We know the last three Star Wars movies sucked, but we're here to put it on track again."Star Wars has made it to American Airlines so caught it last week for a second time, this time on the small screen. Still good. Still kept my attention. Some of the wink wink moments don't play as well on repeated watch as they are meant for people excited to see a SW movie for the first time in a long time.

This is not a great tale brilliantly told, rather a good story done well. My wife and I ruminated over the story for a while after it was over so it gets praise from me for making me think a bit while being entertained. Definitely worth a watch.
Apollo 13 actually happened. It's amazing what they did.Actually it's in the same solar system even.![]()
What makes The Martian so much different? Stranded astronaut(s) getting rescued. Both movies had the rescuers and astronauts using science to figure a way out of their situations. The only main difference is Matt Damon crackin' wise. I am in jamny's camp that thought it felt like a few other movies before it, and it was OK.
I can't stand Armageddon and I loved The Martian. So I really don't get that comparison. Maybe it's because I watch these movies with my son, but I feel less cynical now than I did 20 years ago, and The Martian was enthusiastic - not corny.Apollo 13 actually happened. It's amazing what they did.
I liked The Martian but many of Damons' lines were corny and the music was lame. The Martian is a TNT movie. Closer to Armageddon then Apollo 13. I like Armageddon for what it is.
Armageddon was summer fluff junk. I didn't love The Martian, but I appreciate that at every technical level it was way more than that. But the stories and writing for both not tip-top.jdoggydogg said:I can't stand Armageddon and I loved The Martian. So I really don't get that comparison. Did you actually laugh or did you just yell "LOL"?Unfinished Business - had some laugh out loud moments.
Do we really need to point out the number of films that sucked donkey #### but were based on things that actually happened to demonstrate the flaws in that logic?Apollo 13 actually happened. It's amazing what they did.

I don't have a problem with the music because I get what they were going for. I just never got a sense of real desperation from Damon. The goofy jokes would have worked better if they had a counter in some real serious tension. It was actually hard to watch what Tom Hanks had to go through in Cast Away. Trying to survive on Mars has to be 1000 times harder but I didn't get that.Do we really need to point out the number of films that sucked donkey #### but were based on things that actually happened to demonstrate the flaws in that logic?
Choosing humor as a defense mechanism is not corny it's common and quite realistic, apparently it distracted you from the truly profound disheartening moments of isolation and recognizing ones mortality but that doesn't mean those moments weren't there. I get not liking it but comparing it to Armageddon couldn't be more off base, and I think Armageddon is a hilarious and entertaining (for what it is) space romp.
And the music and television options left to Damon's character were not there to entertain the audience they were there to emphasize his isolation.
Saw this last night. End was, well...........will not do spoilers yet. 8/10.Do yourself a favor.. Go see 10 Cloverfield Lane! Loved it!.... Also.. very much worth not reading any reviews before you go see it.

Where did I say every one of them was good?Do we really need to point out the number of films that sucked donkey #### but were based on things that actually happened to demonstrate the flaws in that logic?
I'm with you on this one. I liked The Martian but comparing it to Cast Away is lazy. They aren't the same type of movie and they weren't trying to be. Cast Away was a character movie and The Martian was a conflict resolution movie. They made no attempt to develop Damon's character ahead of the tragedy or really even during it. All we come away knowing about him is that he's a funny guy. The jokes weren't there for some deep diatribe on isolation, they were there for entertainment, and witty one liners are all the rage in movies right now.I don't have a problem with the music because I get what they were going for. I just never got a sense of real desperation from Damon. The goofy jokes would have worked better if they had a counter in some real serious tension. I had a problem with the music because it didn't fit the movie. For example, in Guardians of The Galaxy, they used goofy old 70s songs to fit a lighthearted movie. In The Martian, they tried the same thing with a serious, life threatening situation and it failed. I still liked the movie, but the music was a weak spot in it.I don't have a problem with the music because I get what they were going for. I just never got a sense of real desperation from Damon. good point about the lack of tension and emotion- totally agree. I'd put that on the writing, IMO- Damon's fun to make fun of (ala Team America), but I think he's got way more range than that. plus the jokey gags and one-liners were written without any subtlety or... humor. like they targeted octogenarians who were a little blind and hard of hearing.I just never really felt much tension out of The Martian, and that held it back from being really good. Not sure if it was jokey Damon, lack of emotion, having seen similar movies, or what. Could have been that they decided to forgo any back story with Damon as well, but for whatever reason, I just wasn't into the movie.
Pixar movie <> "kids movie" (or at least that used to be the case)we saw Good Dinosaur with the kids.
So when they get the environment looking SO astonishing and rich, it's a little distracting to me when the characters are rendered more old-school CG/comic style. Overall, I felt like it lacked something... more humor or tension. or maybe it was that they needed to start the main dinosaur as such as miserable useless annoying wretch just so they could show his growth into something more. also distracting was making the critter so dog-like; his natural advantage is to walk upright and use his opposable thumbs, but instead all fours and teeth. I know they show the resolution at the end, but just found it too overtly obvious as a way of telling little kids- hey, look- it's a pet, just like your dog. or maybe I'm just expecting too much from a kids' movie. mine seemed to like ok (not crazy excited about it).
This was why I didn't "love" this movie. I enjoyed it but felt it lack tension and "severity". I don't know why. One examplegood point about the lack of tension and emotion- totally agree. we saw that in the theater with my 6-yo boy. he didn't love it but liked it well enough. in contrast, we saw The Incredibles last week and he *loved* it. we watched it 3 times in a week, in fact, and he loved it each time. different movies, for sure, but Incredibles reminded me of how Pixar can straddle the adult-kid movie like few others.we saw Good Dinosaur with the kids.

yeah- those were the Halcyon can't-miss days of Pixar. I need to revisit Incredibles, especially with the kids who i don't think have seen it. funny- I don't remember feeling like it was one of their tip-top movies at the time, but my memory sucks.we saw that in the theater with my 6-yo boy. he didn't love it but liked it well enough. in contrast, we saw The Incredibles last week and he *loved* it. we watched it 3 times in a week, in fact, and he loved it each time. different movies, for sure, but Incredibles reminded me of how Pixar can straddle the adult-kid movie like few others.
That scene lacked tension because they already established how the crew would react. This was why I didn't "love" this movie. I enjoyed it but felt it lack tension and "severity". I don't know why. One example

I don't know if it was the writing or the acting but something felt off,
If you're a Sacha Baron Cohen fan I'd be surprised if you didn't like it.This surprises me and makes me very happy.

Have you been following the Presidential primaries? My experience is that most people are not necessarily very bright and need that kind of help.Rewatched The Martian on the plane. Liked it a bit more but there are some parts that really annoyed me. Off the top of my head:

I haven't been. What is the consensus on TWD (the actual show not the posters)? We recently started watching and are in mid season 3 (the prison). I am enjoying it well enough but it isn't blowing my mind or anything. Is it worth it to continue or does it just go completely off the rails?Have you been following the Presidential primaries Walking Dead thread ?
