Whiplash (8.9 - 10). Loved this movie mainly for Simmons. I thought the movie overall was very good, but Simmons stood out for me. I'll never watch another Farmers insurance commercial without thinking of him waving his hand and telling everyone to eff this or eff that or eff everything.
Haven't seen this yet, but he played a Nazi in the HBO series OZ - and I imagine that's even more hardcore than Whiplash.

He Never Died. Stars Henry Rollins. Low budget, quirky story of a man who

can't be killed trying to live a simple life. Complications arise when he finds out

he has a daughter. If you liked After Hours you would like this. Some violance

and low level gore. This is not a fast pace or "actiony" mode of movie some of

you might be into. You might have more questions then answers at the end of this

one.
Watched this last night with the Mrs.  This is the movie for those of you who are looking for that something different than the usual studio fare.  If you've ever complained about there being no original movies then this should be up your alley.  As nightmare points out, the pace is slow yet steady and add to that the acting by Rollins is deadpan, but it all works perfectly for this story.  And there is a bit of a 'moment' that even if you see it coming, brings the poignancy to a new level.

This is not a great tale brilliantly told, rather a good story done well.  My wife and I ruminated over the story for a while after it was over so it gets praise from me for making me think a bit while being entertained.  Definitely worth a watch.

Not a Star Wars honk but did grow up in late 70's and 80's.   I decided to see it today so I wouldn't miss it at the theater.  Best movie I seen in quite a while 10/10 for The Force Awakens.   Had no expectations going in other than I know people liked it.

Star Wars has made it to American Airlines so caught it last week for a second time, this time on the small screen.   Still good.  Still kept my attention.  Some of the wink wink moments don't play as well on repeated watch as they are meant for people excited to see a SW movie for the first time in a long time.

Heard a critic summarize the new Star Wars perfectly: this is the movie that says, "Don't worry, it's going to be ok. We know the last three Star Wars movies sucked, but we're here to put it on track again."

Dead pool 4/5

Very entertaining and funny.  Had heard it was raunchy but was surprised at how far they took it even still.  Definitely up there for Marvel movies.

Got a chance to see Room last night and all I can say is Wow!! Went in not really knowing much about
the storyline and especially in the 2nd half of the film is an emotional rollercoaster 10/10.

Where did you watch it?

Horace and Pete

The new online subscription series from Louis C.K. Phenomenal show. Shot like a play, it's a tribute to old school 30 minute melodramas like Barney Miller and All in the Family. This is a complex, deep script with some incredible acting. An all-star cast and worth every penny of the price.

Actually it's in the same solar system even.  ;)

What makes The Martian so much different?  Stranded astronaut(s) getting rescued.  Both movies had the rescuers and astronauts using science to figure a way out of their situations. The only main difference is Matt Damon crackin' wise.  I am in jamny's camp that thought it felt like a few other movies before it, and it was OK.
Apollo 13 actually happened.  It's amazing what they did.

I liked The Martian but many of Damons' lines were corny and the music was lame.  The Martian is a TNT movie.  Closer to Armageddon then Apollo 13.  I like Armageddon for what it is.

I can't stand Armageddon and I loved The Martian. So I really don't get that comparison. Maybe it's because I watch these movies with my son, but I feel less cynical now than I did 20 years ago, and The Martian was enthusiastic - not corny.

Armageddon was summer fluff junk. I didn't love The Martian, but I appreciate that at every technical level it was way more than that. But the stories and writing for both not tip-top.

Do yourself a favor.. Go see 10 Cloverfield Lane! Loved it! .... Also.. very much worth not reading any reviews before you go see it. :)

Do we really need to point out the number of films that sucked donkey #### but were based on things that actually happened to demonstrate the flaws in that logic?

Choosing humor as a defense mechanism is not corny it's common and quite realistic, apparently it distracted you from the truly profound disheartening moments of isolation and recognizing ones mortality but that doesn't mean those moments weren't there.  I get not liking it but comparing it to Armageddon couldn't be more off base, and I think Armageddon is a hilarious and entertaining (for what it is) space romp.

And the music and television options left to Damon's character were not there to entertain the audience they were there to emphasize his isolation.

I don't have a problem with the music because I get what they were going for. I just never got a sense of real desperation from Damon. The goofy jokes would have worked better if they had a counter in some real serious tension. It was actually hard to watch what Tom Hanks had to go through in Cast Away. Trying to survive on Mars has to be 1000 times harder but I didn't get that.

I'm with you on this one.  I liked The Martian but comparing it to Cast Away is lazy.  They aren't the same type of movie and they weren't trying to be.  Cast Away was a character movie and The Martian was a conflict resolution movie.  They made no attempt to develop Damon's character ahead of the tragedy or really even during it.  All we come away knowing about him is that he's a funny guy.  The jokes weren't there for some deep diatribe on isolation, they were there for entertainment, and witty one liners are all the rage in movies right now.

None of that is a bad thing.  I enjoyed it a lot.  It was a good movie for what it was.  Confront a problem, figure out a solution.  Confront a new problem, figure out a solution.  Confront another problem, figure out a solution.  Mix in some good effects and some funny one-liners and you've got an entertaining flick.  And that's all it was going for.  It wasn't a movie that you came out of thinking about like Cast Away.  You came out of it with "that was pretty fun".

No, it's not just an Armageddon but it was much closer to a well done summer flick than some kind of deep movie that we're going to be referencing 10 years from now.  And honestly, Armageddon probably had more character development.  Again, not a bad thing, that's just not what The Martian was going for.

I had a problem with the music because it didn't fit the movie. For example, in Guardians of The Galaxy, they used goofy old 70s songs to fit a lighthearted movie. In The Martian, they tried the same thing with a serious, life threatening situation and it failed. I still liked the movie, but the music was a weak spot in it.

Creed: Pretty good. About as good as it could have been. 3.75/5

American Ultra: I really liked it. Kinda Bourne, but different and still cool. 4/5

Just saying it would have worked better if the 35-year-old astronaut was into 90's rap instead of disco.

For me Damon rolling around playing rap would have been funnier.  Instead they went with disco to appeal to a larger audience and it came off as forced/corny IMO.

Like Sting at NBA all-star weekend.

Fwiw, damons character was stuck with the disco, not something he liked or chose. The music didnt bother me, the McGyuvering non-psychological study did

I just never really felt much tension out of The Martian, and that held it back from being really good.  Not sure if it was jokey Damon, lack of emotion, having seen similar movies, or what.  Could have been that they decided to forgo any back story with Damon as well, but for whatever reason, I just wasn't into the movie.

Now that he can handle them, and with Civil War coming out soon, my son and I  have been going back and catching up on all Marvel movies we haven't gotten to.  That means we watched all 3 Iron Man movies over the last week.  People bag on the 2nd one, but I actually have fun with that one.  Love Rockwell, you get some Black Widow action, and there is a couple more action sequences too.  I forgot how dull I found 3 to be.  One of the few Marvel movies that I just wanted to end while I was watching it.  The more I watch them, the harder it gets to rank the Marvel movies.  The ones I didn't love the first time - GotG and Thor I had a little more fun with this time around.  I guess I would have Winter Soldier, The Avengers, and Iron Man at the top.  Iron Man 3 and the Thor movies at the bottom.  Everything close together in the middle.  I would guess I like IM 2, Capt America and Hulk more than most, and like GotG and Avengers 2 less than most.

good point about the lack of tension and emotion- totally agree. I'd put that on the writing, IMO- Damon's fun to make fun of (ala Team America), but I think he's got way more range than that. plus the jokey gags and one-liners were written without any subtlety or... humor. like they targeted octogenarians who were a little blind and hard of hearing.

we saw Good Dinosaur with the kids.

So when they get the environment looking SO astonishing and rich, it's a little distracting to me when the characters are rendered more old-school CG/comic style. Overall, I felt like it lacked something... more humor or tension. or maybe it was that they needed to start the main dinosaur as such as miserable useless annoying wretch just so they could show his growth into something more. also distracting was making the critter so dog-like; his natural advantage is to walk upright and use his opposable thumbs, but instead all fours and teeth. I know they show the resolution at the end, but just found it too overtly obvious as a way of telling little kids- hey, look- it's a pet, just like your dog. or maybe I'm just expecting too much from a kids' movie. mine seemed to like ok (not crazy excited about it).

Pixar movie <> "kids movie" (or at least that used to be the case)

I isn't weird to go in expecting a lot out of a Pixar movie.  Well, I guess maybe it is judging on their last 10-15 years of movies.  I was kind of excited to see Finding Dory, but I saw the trailer and it seemed very much like a rehash of locations and jokes as Nemo.  Will still see it, but expectations have been lowered a lot.  Good Dinosaur didn't interest me enough for a theater watch, but will probably check it out soon.

Olympus Has Fallen

I have mixed feelings on this one.  I don't know why it got such rotten reviews because it wasn't awful.  I kinda liked the main characters and their roles.  It was better than White House Down.  Though that isn't a high bar I guess even though I enjoyed that one probably more than most too.  Eh, mindless entertainment that takes place within our historic sites and buildings like these, Independence Day and the National Treasure movies I just seem to enjoy because I get a kick out of our history and government in that way.  Who knew.

Ok, I overstated how long I have been disappointed in the Pixar movies.  It seems be be going on for a longer period of time.  We just used to look to them for originality in the animated movies, but they are now officially caught up in sequelitis just like everybody else.  Looking at their schedule for this decade, only 4 of 11 movies are original.

This was why I didn't "love" this movie.  I enjoyed it but felt it lack tension and "severity".  I don't know why.  One example

When the crew was making their decision about continuing home or turning around it lacked tension or something

I don't know if it was the writing or the acting but something felt off,

Room 4/5

Really good and well acted movie, but holy crap my wife and I weren't prepared for this on a date night. Extremely depressing movie that is a total libido killer. But, again, damn fine movie. Just don't see it when you're hoping to get laid afterwards.

Steve jobs 3.5/5

I get the critical love as the presentation of the movie is really unique. Some great acting two. But I was annoyed by it being a fictional film for some reason and, well, didn't appreciate "Woz" being associated with a chubby Seth Rogen.

we saw that in the theater with my 6-yo boy. he didn't love it but liked it well enough. in contrast, we saw The Incredibles last week and he *loved* it. we watched it 3 times in a week, in fact, and he loved it each time. different movies, for sure, but Incredibles reminded me of how Pixar can straddle the adult-kid movie like few others.

Bridge of Spies.   Tom Hanks was great as usual.   All around good movie.  Suspense, drama, & no gore.  7.5/10.

yeah- those were the Halcyon can't-miss days of Pixar. I need to revisit Incredibles, especially with the kids who i don't think have seen it. funny- I don't remember feeling like it was one of their tip-top movies at the time, but my memory sucks.

That scene lacked tension because they already established how the crew would react.

NASA deliberately withheld the fact that Damon was alive because they knew the crew would immediately want to turn around and mount a rescue attempt

Spoiler
Didn't they pretty explicitly say that they were withholding the information that Damon was alive because they didn't want them to be distracted and emotionally wrecked (for leaving him behind) on the difficult trip home?

At the time they decided to withhold the information about Damon being alive, turning around wasn't even a possibility.

Rewatched The Martian on the plane.  Liked it a bit more but there are some parts that really annoyed me.  Off the top of my head:

"I'm going to have to Science the #### out of it".   Catch phrase for the movie obviously and how they treat a lot of it.   Basically sums up the - you, the audience are dumb so we're going to keep things super light and simple for you.

Every time we have written correspondence, we are going to read it aloud even as we type because people are too dumb to read.

We are going to use people and common items lie around to explain these concepts even though we are a bunch of geniuses, the audience is too stupid to get it if we just explain it.

Purnell uses a NASA super computer to validate his numbers but somehow the crew of the Ares is also able to run them and validate them prior to speaking with NASA.

Why would they attempt the ridiculously difficult and risky rescue maneuver instead of just having the ARES carry the re-supplies and drop them off?   The risk in the other re-supply mission was the very difficult rationing they were going to have to do.   Using the ARES they could have resupplied him for rescue with the ARES 4.

I haven't been.  What is the consensus on TWD (the actual show not the posters)? We recently started watching and are in mid season 3 (the prison).  I am enjoying it well enough but it isn't blowing my mind or anything.  Is it worth it to continue or does it just go completely off the rails?
