Hmmm...I didn't find Guardians of the Galaxy funny, or good for that matter, although I only made it about a half hour in. I was wondering if I'd have the same reaction to Deadpool. I guess I'll wait for it on HBO.

Wow, I thought I was the one with the out of wack comedy meter.  A few of you guys seriously didn't find anything funny about Deadpool?
I think it was very funny.

And now that I've seen it a second time and still laughed a bunch, that's plenty of reason to give it credit.

Watched Lawrence of Arabia again.  So good.  My top 5.

The implied rape scene was interesting considering it came out in 1962.

Will one day watch this on the big screen.  Playing in LA next Monday but I'll wait to let it freshen up for another time.

What a life by T.E. Lawrence.  Hard to imagine the adventure and context.

Finally saw The Revenant

Excellent film with all time great cinematography. A couple of minor flaws at the end were only a slight detraction.

Cell

A movie based on a pretty good Stephen Book, starring Sam Jackson and John Cusack out to be watchable, right?

Finally got around to watching Nightcrawler. Pretty solid. Is it hated here?
I liked it and I think most around here did too.  There are some that I think were bothered by its lack of a real climax and resolution like a "typical" movie would have, but more that enjoyed its somewhat unique take as a character study more than a story.

Salvador - Not Oliver Stone's first film (third film, don't know if what preceded it is relegated to juvenilia?), but I think first film that got any Oscar recognition - actually competed against himself with the winning Platoon that year? One of James Woods best performances, based on the source material writer's experiences as a photo-journalist in Central America when dictators disappeared citizens by the tens (hundreds?) of thousands. Not a good feeling family movie.

At Close Range - Another true story, about a serial killing family theft ring who went on a murderous spree to silence young gang member witnesses when the police began to roll them up. Christopher Walken is terrifying (I mean, more than usual :)  ) as the father, a VERY young Sean Penn as the formerly estranged son who becomes entangled with the family business.

Cop - Another Woods film, a serial killer mystery/thriller, also one of my favorite performances by him when he was at his peak, based on a pre-LA Quartet/Confidential novel by James Ellroy, directed and co-produced by James B. Harris, who was an early partner of Kubrick for The Killing, Paths of Glory and Lolita, before they amicably went their separate ways so then-producer Harris could also pursue his directorial ambitions.

All recommended.

I can't imagine a scenario where I will ever tire of watching The Wolf of Wall Street.

One of the most entertaining movies ever made.

I got lost with Josh weird movie. I think IWilsonnderstood more the second tim e around.
I got lost with Brolin part at the end. I get what he was doing for Owen WiLson.

Is there no spoiler code on this forum anymore? I couldn't find it, so I'll try to be vague:

I interpreted Brolin's breakdown as inevitable given all his bravado and moral ambiguity.

London has Fallen

I guess the sequel to Olympus has Fallen, yet nothing is mentioned in the movie regarding the first one.  Don't waste your time with this one.  While Olympus has Fallen was good imo, as far as mindless action flicks go, this one is a dud.  Save for one scene, one where it was all one take and one continuous action scene, this movie doesn't have much.  For a supposed big budget action movie, I've seen better cgi in video games.  Plot was bad, acting was bad despite some good actors, writing was bad,  the whole thing was one big "meh".  Go ahead and see it if you're totally bored and nothing else is on, but if you go ahead and rent this crap thinking "oh boy, I'm in for a good action movie", you will me majorly disappointed.  I sure was.

3/10-being generous.

Ashby

(currently streaming on NetFlix)

This is the movie with Mickey Rourke and a couple of high school kids.  Awkward loner kid befriends assassin neighbor.

Loner kid played by Nat Wolff (Paper Towns) was really great!

The rest of the cast was really great as well. Sarah Silverman playing a horny desperate single mom and Micky Rourke, although somewhat hard to look at for extended scenes were fun to watch.

I really liked this and recommend it.  7/10

At first I thought Deadpool's humor was trying way too hard to be funny, but it grew on me through the course of the movie (the scenes with the bartender were some of the funniest) to the point I could recommend it. Not for everybody, and definitely NOT a typical child's super hero movie, lot of adult references.

Sicario was good, though in the end it seemed like an elaborate lead in to what the payoff turned out to be. Blurred the lines between "good" and "bad" guys. Non-musical but effectively menacing score/soundtrack.

"Me and Earl and the Dying Girl" 8/10

I saw this little independent film over the weekend. I know it may not be for everyone but I loved it.

It was just a really good piece of unique story telling and that's what I generally look for in a movie. Just something a little different that breaks away from the everyday movie formula.

You know there are so many movies that you see and by the time you get home you forget everything about them.

And then there are those few that stick with you and you find yourself thinking about them days after seeing them?

This is one that sticks with you.

RJ Cyler plays the secondary role of "Earl". This kid is going to be a super star.

I made the mistake of watching this on the plane to Vegas.   Let's just say I was embarrassed to have tears rolling down my eyes on a plane while watching this.   I have a soft spot for movies like this, "Fault in our Stars, Perks of being a Wallflower etc"

10 Cloverfield Lane - It was a good movie. The ending is not enough to ruin it, but this would have been great had it not been tied to Cloverfield.

Scout's Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse - I enjoyed it. I laughed several times.

The Brothers Grimsby:

I tried, and am usually a big fan of SBC's movies.  Hell I even laughed a bit at The Dictator.  Couldn't make it through.  I laughed a couple times, but I think it was just too much for me last night.  My laugh boner started drooping as soon as Rebel Wilson showed up (really don't find her funny at all), and pulled the plug shortly after the elephants.

Wyrmwood: Road of the Dead. Australian zombie movie. Not bad, but worth it to see Bianca Bradey. She is a really good actress and pretty hot.

It is on Netflix

I know I am in the minority, but Wolf of Wall Street was kinda meh for me.
you're not in the minority.

it's scorcese, so you know it's going to be 'good', well-crafted, etc and better than 90% of what's out there (or more). but didn't grab me in any way memorable.

Agreed on Cloverfield Lane. The ties to the original were tacked on and brought it down a little bit. Though I did like the final shot, gave me hope for the next movie.

I can see that... Still enjoyed it quite a bit...

My favorite experience of 10 Cloverfield Lane was taking my Dad, who never saw the "original" film, to it and getting his reaction to the last 10 minutes or so..

I agree that it was a good film, with Penn and Walken in top form. I still remember Madonna singing "Live To Tell" over the closing credits, which was very good.

Yeah, that pretty much sums it up.  And far too much I was thinking to myself, this is Goodfellas with the Stock Market, or Casino with DiCaprio.

Midnight Special:

This is the new one from Jeff Nichols (Mud, Take Shelter) starring Michael Shannon.  Not quite to the level of the other ones he has done, but it still has great acting and touches on the themes that his other movies do.  I would guess that anybody who liked his other movies will get something out of this too.  This one feels like Nichols' take on an 80s sci-fi movie.

Been wanting to see this. Big fan of Michael Shanon and of those two movies. If you haven't seen Shotgun  Stories  make sure you catch that as well.

I had two long flights yesterday and watched both London and Olympus has Fallen. I went in with very low expectations because they both got terrible reviews.

Are they far fetched and ridiculous? Yea. But I enjoyed both. They were fun. Mindless action entertainment. Well worth a few hours.
