Watched the Maze Runner. certainly not trying to break any new ground there, and as simplistic a plot device as can be... but I enjoyed it for what it was (with the caveat that I'm a sucker for post-apocolyptic crap). rehashing the same plot in a different location for #2 seems seriously lazy, even for Hollywood (and bad young adult fantasy novelists).

Did a few rewatches

John Wick - gets better each time. Good solid brainless action movie. Love the whole idea of the hotel more and more and hope the sequel gets into that world a little more.

Edge of Tomorrow - continues to be solid. Couldn't care less about the plot holes. Just fun.

Star Trek Into Darkness - still solid. Still not loving that they redid Wratch of Khan to the extent they did but they did it well and overall I enjoy the new cast and the little nuggets giving credit to the old show they throw out here and there.

Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation

Pretty awesome action movie. There are some ridiculous problems (see spoiler for an example), but the action is top notch.

So Hunt has to be under water for three minutes without air because you can't get metal into the facility and therefore he can't use an air tank. But the security card is made of plastic. What, they can't made an air tank out of plastic? They make weapons out of ceramic, no ceramic breathing tank? Seems this would have been an easy fix to a nonsensical problem.

Geez this one got to me.

Watched Waitress with Keri Russell.

Nice flick. Had heard good things.

So I noticed a female director, Adrienne Shelly, and that she also co-starred.

Looked her up on IMDB to see what she has done since. Punch in the stomach. Especially after the last 10 minutes and last scene that includes her daughter.

Was Woody Allen's What's Up, Tiger Lilly a precursor to the word play, gag movies like Airplane?

Dialogue example:

Shepherd Wong lives in this house (shows diagram/schematic).

You mean he lives in that piece of paper?

No, you idiot, he has a regular house!

Big fan of that one... need to rewatch. egg salad recipe.

Not as good as Ghost Protocol. Seemed to drag in spots. And your spoiler is right on.

not really a WA fan but this sounds interesting...from Wikipedia:

Allen took a Japanese spy film, International Secret Police: Key of Keys, and overdubbed it with completely original dialogue that had nothing to do with the plot of the original film.[2] By putting in new scenes and rearranging the order of existing scenes, he completely changed the tone of the film from a James Bond clone into a comedy about the search for the world's best egg salad recipe.[3]

Hmmmm I thought it was every bit as good as Ghost

it's pretty great- and best of all, doesn't have woody allen or woody allen clone in it.

eta: IIRC, he also edited in some band performance shots of... Loving Spoonful or similar. Or maybe that's from another movie... googling now.

eta2: good gravy... I got it right. I can remember that- from a movie I haven't seen in probably 30 years- but I couldn't tell you word one of what my wife has said to me in weeks.

It is on youtube, BTW.The Lovin Spoonfull soundtrack actually worked pretty well, especially the lazy instrumental guitar stuff.

Another example of his overlaid dialogue. Wing Fat makes a killing gambling at a casino on Shepherd Wong's boat. He cashes out his chips, stuffs a bag full of cash, and than the employee asks if he would like some female companionship. He says sure, walks to another part of the boat, the guide stops at the end of a corridor, says check this out, claps his hands and about a half dozen women immediately open the door. Wing Fat strolls down it, saying, Hi, Hello, Nice to meet you, than stops short - MOM!

Earlier, the main Japanese James Bond-like spy is with one of the main female spies (there are two Yaki sisters, Teri and Suki* :) ). In a crowded room, she discretely tells him, You are pretty good looking, nice body, I'd like to tear your clothes off right here and make violent love to you on the floor. When he says sounds good and tries to kiss here, she disgustedly says, all you men ever think about is sex.

Karate fight dialogue - Saracen pig. Roman Dog. Spanish Fly.

* They were the same two Japanese female leads in the Bond film, You Only Live Twice. The Asian stripper during the end credit roll (Allen jokes he promised her a part in the movie - she married his comic idol, Mort Sahl) is China Lee, the first Asian Playboy playmate of the month - '64?

Haven't seen Tiger Lilly in a long time but remember it blowing my mind because I had no idea what it was about before I watched it.

Gotta check it out again.

Watched Chef the other night. 4/10, only because Gary Clark, Jr. gets a cameo when they're in Austin and... well, Sofia Vergara.

I've watched Edge of Tomorrow twice. I've watched John Wick at least 4 times. It's just relentless action that's very well done, with some decent actors thrown into the mix.

Birdman

I had watched this previously and watched it a second time tonight. I think a test to see if a film is very good is whether it is just as good the second time.

I found it to be nearly unwatchable the second time. The clever camera work wasn't so interesting this time, which left good acting as it's only merit. The characters were so obnoxious, unlikable and unhappy, it was miserable. And it still had the weak ending. It is now on my list of the weakest films to ever win Best Picture, with Chicago, Crash, Out of Africa, The Artist and The English Patient.

Ex Machina:

I ####in' loved this movie. Great performances, especially from the female lead. I can't think of

many really good, smart sci-fi movies in the last several years, so this is an absolute must see if you are looking for something on those lines. It would be a fantastic double feature with Her.

Just might end up watching this one again tonight. Not that I have seen many from 2015, but this vaulted right to the top of the best movie of the year so far. 8.5/10.
This.
Just watched it. Would rate it the same. Very good. Ending caught me off guard a bit and had me re-thinking the whole movie. I like that.
Only thing that I didn't like was Nathan's reckless alcoholism. I can buy he's an alcoholic, but no way he'd be reckless enough to get wasted around the kid with that much at stake.

Also watched Insurgent which was really stupid considering how much I hated the first one. Shoot me if I even think about watching the third
I actually didn't mind divergent and thought it was better than hunger game, but insurgent just consistently gets terrible reviews. Guess it's an avoid.

Completely disagree. But that's cool.

I'd chalk that behavior up to hubris.

Do you think Nathan's alcoholism was an act to some degree?

Focus

Okay movie, nor great. As I was picking it up from redbox, the guy waiting in line mentioned how awesome it was. That set my expectations way too high. While it was a movie I wanted to see, and I really do like Will Smith, there were better options. The ending was a bit of a let down.

6.5/10

Worth seeing but won't watch again.

Saw Ant-Man and Jurassic World this weekend. Both were entertaining popcorn movies.

Looking forward to Mission Impossible 5

this week.
Jurassic world is absolutely dreadful.
I have no allegiance to the originals, so maybe

that's why I didn't mind it.
I've ranted plenty in the Jurassic world thread so I'll keep this to a minimum. The plot holes and factual stupidity in this movie was just simply too much to handle. I like mindless dinosaur fun as much as the next guy, but the writing in this movie was literally laughable.

Do you think Nathan's alcoholism was an act to some degree?I thought so at points, but after the movie ended I think he was just an alcoholic. That wouldn't be uncommon for a super genius I guess looking to get out of his own mind.

I just couldn't believe he didn't put in safeguards against it.

I just took it is him being isolated, a bit crazy, and and coping with the weird #### that he was doing.

A little bipolar, no doubt. But many, if not most, of the great ones are.

While we're young 2/5

Tried so hard to be smart that I found it stupid. Or maybe I'm just not smart enough.

Like, he was testing the protagonist? Perhaps. Hadn't thought of that.

Oh I agree. I liked the campiness.

These movies don't go all that well when they take themselves too seriously.
