Trading Places

What can I say? One of the best comedies ever made, and infinitely rewatchable.
It is except no matter how many times I've watched I still get slightly confused on the "we get rich they get poor" part..

I assume they purchased orange shares the day before at the "low" price.. waited for the price to go up and then sold the shares they had purchased cheap the day before..

Then, once the price had dropped like a rock, they started buying again.. I assume the overall selling by others was out doing their purchasing and thus the reason the price kept diving?? :whoosh:
I was wondering how that would work. I am forwarding this to my brother in law. He's a financial planner, and I bet he'll have a good answer.

The hero's changed the crop report. The original one was going to result in prices dropping. The fake one showed that prices should rise. The bad guys tell their traders to buy no matter what. Others see this and start buying as well thinking they know something. The price gets higher and higher and higher as everyone is buying. Akroyd announces that they will sell at a price. It's a futures promise - they don't actually own the OJ yet.but they are promising to sell it in the future at that fixed price. Everyone thinks the price is going to be higher given what is going on on the floor so they start buying like crazy.

The announcer on TV says the crop is good - the opposite of the report the bad guys got tricked with. It means the price will be low because there will be a lot of supply. Knowing that the price will drop they start selling as fast as possible. When the price hits the low - like 20 cents or whatever, the good guys start buying future promises.

The bad guys can't get their guy to sell so they own a fortune of expensive OJ that they wont be able to sell for anything but a massive loss. Good guys have the promise to buy a ton of oj at like 20 cents but then sell it for the buck 50 or whatever they were offering to sell it for before the annoucement came out. They will make millions, and the bad guys will lose everything.

:thanks: this makes it easier to understand:

" Akroyd announces that they will sell at a price. It's a futures promise - they don't actually own the OJ yet.but they are promising to sell it in the future at that fixed price."

uh... yeah- orange futures.

but more importantly Jamie Lee Curtis' boobs. IMO, the best on screen boobs in history... although I'm willing to hear some worthwhile competitors.

Response from my brother in law:

No, they sold as prices were going up then bought back as the price collapsed.. Buying the day before would simply have moved the price up and probably tipped off the brothers that something was up.

You just have to reverse the order of trading we are used to. Instead of buying first and then selling, when you short something you SELL it first then Buy it back after the price starts to fall.

A good double feature would be Trading Places and The Producers since they run a similar scam selling too many shares of the play. Of course the play was popular so the shares went up, wiping them out.

ok, so for the best boobs ever on film, so far, we have:

Trading Places

Species 3

Fast Times at Ridgemont High

I remember Uma's looking pretty awe inspiring in Dangerous Liasons

Watched Inside Out again. I think it is very good vs. the recent Pixar output (which is a pretty low bar), but not up to the level of their best movies.

Pixels: Yeah, that happened. The 9 year old really wanted to watch it and loves Kevin James movies, so I said we would check it out. Not as bad as recent Sandler movies, but I didn't like it much. He had a blast, which is all that counts for fun movie night. Some of the stuff out of Tyrion's mouth made me cringe a little watching with him, but mostly it was fine.

Have they released the 3D, Atmos sound version of My Dinner With Andre yet?
Love that movie. That would be awesome.

Used to see Wally on the 1 train with some regularity here in NYC 25 years ago. Face down in a notebook scribbling away. Always wondered what a movie "star" was doing riding the subways... had no idea at the time he was more playwright than actor.

I know this is rental and all but I saw Mockingjay 2 last night. Not bad but not great. I'd wonder how I'd react had I not read the books since I knew what was going to happen. Decent matinee movie, below average night time movie.

Hidden (2015) - 7/10

A good 'family trapped in a fallout shelter after an apocalypse' movie. Don't read anything about it, just watch ($3.99 on Amazon).
This was so bad. Every time it looked like it couldn't get worse, it topped itself. We wound up fast forwarding to see certain parts but even gave up on that. Horrible.

Meryl Streep might be the only artist more overrated than Prince.
WTF? Did you move out of Minnesota? If not, I'd be prepared for a knock on your door soon followed by a government sanctioned beatdown. Prince is the Minnesota treasure.

Kelly Preston - mischiefSalma Hayek - desperado
That would be the winner for me.But....Kimberly McArthur in "Easy Money" (Rodney Dangerfield) - unreal.
Betsy Russell - Private School, when she was riding bareback while bareback.
