Have a free HBO and Cinemax weekend going on.  Now I remember a big reason I don't have these channels anymore, as I ended up just plopping my ### in the recliner and watching movies all night.  (all I have seen before, of course)

Gone Girl:

I know this one was 50/50 with people, but I really like the movie.  Perfect movie for Fincher's style.  Not 100% on board with the ending, but everything up to that was very good.

Spaceballs:

Probably should have just let the childhood memory of this one stand.  Got about 40mins in, and switched the channel.  Maybe I chuckled once.  I was watching it to see if it was something that my son would watch since he is a big Star Wars fan.  Not sure.

Jackie Brown:

THIS is the Tarantino that I kept hoping we would see in the 00s.  The great characters/dialogue/music that we love his movies for, but none of the over the top Grindhouse and B-movie shlock that he loves so much now.  If not my favorite movie of his, it is not farther down than #2.

Re-watched Drive with Jared Goffsling, one of my favorite neo-noirs of the past decade. Underrated, imo.

Mr. Show

The brilliant, insane series is FINALLY available on HBO GO. Aside from Monty Python, this is my favorite sketch series of all time. The amazing talents of Bob Odenkirk, David Cross, Brian Posehn, Sarah Silverman, Paul F. Tompkins, Jack Black, Tom Kenny, Mary Lynn Rajskub, Scott Aukerman, and Dino Stamatopoulos made a special show that's never been duplicated.

Wycked Sceptre

Titanica

Bought the dvds years ago after getting HBO specifically for this show.

Watched "Guardians of the Galaxy" and "Philomena" over the weekend with the gf. "GoG" held up pretty well the second time around for me because it's loopy fun. "Philomena" had its comic moments, too, but it's mostly a drama. Judi Dench is ever-reliable as a mother who gave up a child under duress to adoption by the Catholic Church in Ireland. Steve Coogan, who I dearly love, is fine as the journalist that is tasked with telling her story.

Steve Coogan is good enough reason for me to watch something.

Pitch Perfect 2

Awful

I thought the first movie was fun and entertaining.  This second thing.....good grief it's terrible.
That's not true.

1) Pitch Perfect is incredible. Almost a perfect movie. One of the more re-watchable movies to come along in a while.

2) PP2 is not nearly as good as PP, but still quite enjoyable.

Everything that made PP really fun was missing in PP2.  The only fun parts were the announcer dude and gal.

Started watching The Big Short and turned it off after 20 minutes.

The camera work of extremely quick cuts and zooms and moves was so irritating, it was hard to pay attention to the story. I don't think the camera stayed still for more than 1 second. Add in obnoxious characters to the frenetic mix and I gave up. Can't a director just tell a good story without ridiculous, overdone camera movement?

I don't know what to say. Loved this movie.

Look Who's Back

Adolf Hitler wakes up to find himself in the 21st century. From there he pursues a career as a standup comedian. Really well done. 7/10

I just watched this and found it absolutely hilarious!  Pretty unexpected

The part that was a parody of that movie that everyone has used on the internet to voice their frustration about whatever... HFS that had me cracking up

Shotgun Stories (free with amazon prime) - this was the first film from Jeff Nichols (Take Shelter and Mud, both of which I really liked). Michael Shannon was great as usual.

Story of a feud between two sets of 1/2 brothers over their dead father set in Arkansas. A must watch if you are a Michael Shannon fan, especially if you have prime, 7.3/10.

That's what I thought.  Going in I was really skeptical. Was really well done.

I really thought the part when the TV producer met with the writers coming up with an idea for the show was irreverent as heck, and LMAO.

What did you like about it? Obviously you weren't as bothered or distracted by the camera work like I was.
I like that The Big Short condenses a lot of info into interesting formats and taught me about the details of the crisis while remaining entertaining.

Bone Tomahawk 4/5

In a different type of western. Kurt Russell plays a sheriff in the west whose part of a

4 man posse set out to rescue a group of captives held by cannibal cave dwellers.
Pretty OK Western. Enough tension to keep the story going. Some serious plot twists/questions tho. And who wrote the dialog, a sophomore English student?

Another thing about this movie, it's got a lot of unscripted parts with the public... like Borat or the Ali G show.  So some of the funniest parts are people reacting to Hitler or Hitler riffing off something someone else says.

Like this part:

Hitler talking to some college kid:

>Kid: The National Democratic Party if you look closely behind the facade, is against the death penalty.. I mean for it for pedophiles and the like. They want justice. We're just fighting for our rights. We could use more democracy so that someone can lay down the law and say: This is how we're going to do it and that's final. No discussion.

>Hitler: You are so right. That's just my kind of democracy. That's how I see democracy!
Had me rollin.

San Andreas

I went into it knowing it was going to be throw back to the 70's disaster movies with a little more special effects juice.

I LOL'ed a half dozen times at how bad it was.  I actually thought had they spent maybe a little more with the Paul Giamatti character it could have been an "okay" movie.

If you go into this movie with zero expectations of it being a good movie, you actually might find yourself entertained.

Too over the top in the "ridiculous" area for my liking.

My favorite part was the Rock, as a trained emergency responder, in the rescue chopper, flying over a freeway as it collapses, and he gives it just one casual glance over his shoulder before saying "Whew, not my problem!" then flying onward.

Also, the girl was hot and should have been topless.
   Spectacular cleave.

My favorite scene was when they were racing to reach the top of the tsunami wave and the tanker came up over the top of them.

I had to rewind it and watch it a couple of times because it made me laugh so hard.

you guys ever see true detective season 1? She is topless... episode 2 IIRC

I know. The "hidden" messages Hitler was giving off was hilarious.  It was funny how they played up the fact that everyone thought he was playing a part, instead of actually being him.  The juxapositioning of that was really well done throughout.  Im going to rewatch again as Im sure I missed little details here and there and that was what made this film so epic. LOL.

She was in True Detective, Season 1.

My favorite part was after the whole drowning thing.   Instead of BACKING out the 20 feet, they race through the building the same way it was falling

It was all so ridiculous but we had fun watching it. You know right off the bat how bad/good it will be with the first rescue.

The Italian Job:.  Never seen this and I love a good heist movie.  Great cast, really good beginning in Venice and good movie but suffers from the Hollywood predictability of good guy, bad guy... Protagonist gets girl and everyone lives happily ever after.  Except the bad guy who gets his.  Yawn.   But still a good watch.  And I hate Marky Mark

Ocean's 11 on now, forgot how good of a movie this was.    Great soundtrack, super cast, fun movie

"Hello, My Name is Doris"

I'm not a fan of Sally Field, but this movie was really good, and had more than just a handful of LOL moments.

And not for nothing but Tyne Daly was really good in this.

caught Spotlight on a plane... good. I shouldn't be surprised that "good" movies, not "great" movies win the best movie award at the oscars... but I am.

I got a list of films I want to watch.  which should I pick?

a beautiful mind
crimson peak

I would say the top and the bottom ones.  Haven't seen the middle two.  Crimson Peak I found dull, and Trance I didn't like at all.

The Killing - 7.5/10

Early Kubrick means not as weird Kubrick and thus more enjoyable to me.

Well written heist movie that has obviously had influence down through the ages, including the shotgun in the flower box from T2. Felt rather Tarantino-esque too.

Anyone see Lost River yet? Written and directed by Ryan Gosling and on HBOGO right now. Mixed reviews but I am a David lynch fan so going to check it out.

Ryan Gosling makes his directorial debut with this surreal, Lynchian film about a single mother and her two sons trying to survive in what's left of their decaying city. Starring Christina Hendricks, Saoirse Ronan, Iain de Caestecker and Matt Smith with Eva Mendes and Ben Mendelsohn. Written and directed by Ryan Gosling. (R) (AC,AL,V)

Sicario - 7/10

The good parts are really good (when they go into Juarez, for example).

But Blunt's character is poorly written with little subtlety and doesn't effectively serve as the viewer's proxy in the events.

"high rise"

great cast (Hiddleston, Irons, Seinna Miller) and source material (JG Ballard) with a very capable director (Ben Wheatley, "Kill List" and "Down Terrace") here. It's a throwback film in a lot of ways that is not going to be a hit for everyone. I thought it was loopy fun but those who joined me were not as amused.

To me this is the obvious choice.  Great story, terrific performances, based on true events, and even better when you go in knowing very little about it.
Actually i just rented this last nite.  I had no idea what it was about.  After I rented it, I looked up John Nash on Wiki and it turns out he and his wife died in a car crash in 2015.  Apparently they had just flown home from Europe after John received a major award and they got a taxi and were heading home when the taxi river lost control and slammed into a guardrail.  Both John and his wife were ejected from the car in the collision and died.
