Valhalla Rising 6/10

A wasted opportunity IMHO, just got a bit too abstract in the last third of the movie.  The first half of the show was pretty good, but I'm a sucker for the genre.
what genre is this? I watched this a while back and couldn't figure it (genre, movie, everything) out. looked beautiful, but really hard to put my finger on what the intent was.

saw Black Hat.

I remember when it came out, I thought- Michael Mann, decent cast, interesting concept... gotta be at least decent. wrong.

Historical fiction?  About a Viking dude that joins a small group on a crusade type of quest...kinda weird really.

yeah- definitely a period thing, vikings etc... but felt like there was lots else going on with subtext/metaphor/whatever that was lost on me. but again- beautifully filmed.

What was historical about it?  It was an attempt (a failed one IMO) at some kind of philosophical reflection about the death of old religion, or some such, wrapped in a Viking boat then...Native Americans.  Because okay, sure why not?

The Faculty

Seriously, is there a better movie for the alien attack/body snatchers type movie?  I don't know if there is.  It's so good, bad, good, stupid, silly, fun that it's the perfect hour and half if you are into that genre.  And Jordana Brewster.  Heck, even Frazier's wife was stunning once she got all alienized.

will check it out

Good Night, and Good Luck 4.5/5

Just extremely well done.  The black and white filming fit perfect.   Acting was impeccable.   Must see IMO, not for the content but for the overall experience.

this was the murrow biopic-ish thing? loved that, and yeah- some fantastic acting, especially by the guy playing murrow.

Saw The Infiltrator tonight.

Don't bother.  Ultimately dull and the writing was half-a55ed.

oh and if you were alive in the mid 80s you'll laugh at how horrible the sets, props, and locations are.

Something that interested me from Simmons podcast with Wesley Morris.

Point was how men who start out as sex symbols types can "evolve" much more easiely then women.  Rang true to me.

They somewhat compared channing Tatum to Megan fox.

While I totally agree with the premise, seems kind of obvious and something that has been discussed around the industry for years, did they mention that Megan Fox has pretty much no talent and is apparently a nightmare to work with?

See, that was my big problem with the movie. First 45 minutes were great. Talking about stereotypes, tolerance, not prejudging people. And then here come the Sloths, and they are slooowwww...And of course they work at the DMV. Yeah, it was a little funny, but it went against everything they were talking about before that
I didn't get the Sloth = making fun of Special Needs types parallel. I just thought they were, you know "Sloths"

Doesn't the ending reinforce that message though?

Secret Life of Pets is only doing meh critically as well.

6.8 on IMDB

69% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes

75% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes

61 Metacritic score
Saw it with the wife and kids. I thought it was great 7.5/10. Plenty of chuckle out loud moments with some grownup-ish and some kid-ish level jokes, some scary moments ala Pixar (but not as perilous). Very good take the kids along summer popcorn movie. Not a big Louis CK fan, but thought he did a very good job as Max. Albert Brooks was great as Tiberius as was Kevin Hart as the Rabbit. My 8YO liked it (70%), my 13YO liked it (7.5 too). Wife thought it was pretty meh 6/10.

No where near the full scale emotional and visual theatrical experience as a good Pixar movie, but pretty darn good for what it is.

Makes sense offhand.  There seem to be some counter examples though.  Jennifer Aniston, Angelina Jolie, Scarlett Johansson, Charlize Theron, Keira Knightley, Rachel McAdams.

Swiss Army Man

Second bat**** crazy movie I've seen in a row. Might as well pair this with my previous entertainment The Lobster.

Two thumbs up.

Caught a few flicks flying to and from Alaska this past week.

Deadpool

I've been avoiding it because of what I had heard about it. There were some things about it I didn't like, but overall I was surprised at how much I liked it. I really liked it!  Very funny...Good story.  Loved all the characters especially the dude from Silivon Valley and the blind lady character.

Point Break

The action scenes in this movie were way above average.  Some of the story was dumb (jumping off a thousand foot waterfall) but the snow board scene and those glide suit thingys were great.  I probably never would have bothered watching it unless I was stuck on a long flight.

How to be Single

i thought this would be a lot of Rebel Wilson doing a lot of her schtick, which it was to a point, but it also had a lot of other people doing go schtick too. I like a good chick flick as much as the next guy so I enjoyed this.

Triple 9

I loved it.  I don't think I've seen a movie where Casey Affleck gave a poor performance.   Dirty cops, bank heists, Russian mafia, lotta bullets.  Really great!   My clear favorite from this trip.

Batman vs Superman

Watched 5 minutes and turned it off.

Tower Records

Very enjoyable documentary on the record store Tower Records.  Brought me back to my teenage years and going to a record store to kill time flipping through albums.  Unfortunately ran out of time to finish.

Nine Nine Nine

Has been on my watch list for a while.

Straight Outta Compton.

What a good movie. Blown away at how much I liked it.
+1

I thought it was pretty well done and I liked it. The music and names really brought me back to younger days. I was kinda surprised that I still knew almost all of the lyrics.

Dammit, need to get back on this.  Still haven't watched it past episode 2, and it is just sitting on the DVR.
I was kinda kicking the can down the road (re)starting this too. I knew how great it is,  but there's just so much else to see too. I finally decided to just go for an episode and figure I'd get drawn in. Four hours / episodes later, I didn't want to go to bed. Have "The Pacific"  cued up next-ish.

Straight out of Compton is my gym/yard work album. :)

I don't know how accurate the movie was but I liked it.

Either I didn't know or I forgot the solo albums were from "falling outs" and not just doing it.  I didn't realize Cube wrote a lot of that either.

Forget how good his solo was

Didn't realize Easy had that big of a part in NWA

Can probably skip The Pacific.

FIVE EASY PIECES

Bob's Criterion thread got me fired up for a bit on movies again, and I grabbed a pile of them from the library. Really glad I stuck with this one.  I wasn't digging the first 45 mins or so of the movie, but loved it after Jack got to his family's house.  Still thinking about what I didn't like about the beginning and the character, which is a sign of a good movie.

I think it's easy to discount a movie because you don't like the main character, or their actions... but IMO, successful movies make you feel and think during and hopefully afterwards.

big fan of 5 Easy Pieces, but haven't seen it in years... could use a re-watch. I'm pretty sure it's not by him, but it had a kind of Cassavetes vibe IIRC. Woman Under the Influence kind of feel.

I am the opposite. If I don't like any of the characters, I have a hard time enjoying it unless the story is very compelling.

Is there a movie thread for Movies seen in the Theaters? I thought there was but can't find it.

Saw Swiss Army Man (aka Dead farting Daniel Radcliffe movie) last night. Very funny and touching. Daniel Radcliffe stole the show

This has just become a catch all "what have you seen" thread.  Rentals, streaming, theater, movies, shows, whatever....

I don't have a problem loving movies where I don't like most of the people involved (see my movie lists).  I think a little had to do with the offputting nature of nothing going anywhere, and really nothing much does for the whole movie.  Really found the girlfriend annoying as all get out too. Was thinking about it today and (just because I saw it again recently), he is very much as amped up version of a guy like Chris McCandless (Into the Wild).  Difference while Chris had focus to his restlessness about life (if that makes any sense), Jack had none of that.  Just seemingly uncomfortable about where he came from, who he is, nothing occupies him for very long, on and on.  We really get little in the way of answers to why that might be - he just is.  I love the ambiguity of the ending, and that helped with getting my wheels turning more about the movie.

I didn't care for this movie, but I did appreciate that the acting is about as realistic as you'll ever see in a movie.

I don't have to like the characters, but I do have to believe them and they have to have depth.
