This is about where I am. I just lump everything together, and when you do that, it is VERY rare that something is an original thing just for the movies. I am surprised how many things are graphic novels and books, and then combine that with all the sequels/remakes/reboots, and you have to dig fairly deep (especially this time of year) to find something not in the realm of "already been done". Too much money riding on these to risk on an original property. That's usually what we get at the start of the year or for award season (although a lot of Academy Award movies are based on books too, and have a little bit of a built in fan base).
If the argument is "Hollywood is out of original ideas and is only repurposing crap with built-in fanbases and old ideas from elsewhere", I'd say Deadpool is an example of that kind of reboxing something else into movie form.
The reasons Hollywood doesn't make more movies like Interstellar and Ex Machina and other fully original ideas, is because of movies like Deadpool. I don't separate Deadpool from X-Men, Avengers, the Da Vinci Code, Harry Potter, The A-Team Movie, the CHiPs movie, or whatever. They're all in the same basket.
I can't imagine how small of a list we would have if we made a list of fully original movies that we liked in the last few years, and smaller yet, how many of those actually made money. That's why movies like Ex Machina, Whiplash, Her, and Nightcrawler stand out more to me. But those won't be trotted out for the summer season. I think Nolan is about the only one they seem to trust with something original during the summer season for original properties.

Batman v Superman B-
Liked Holly Hunter and esp. Gal Gadot.
. Affleck was good as the Bat, and Henry Cavill was good as Supe.
Laurence Fishburne was like a fish out of water and Jessee Eisenberg didn't work as Lex Luthor. Just couldn't pull off menacing. Though I liked him in "American Ultra", Luthor is a different beast altogether. Lex Luthor always seems larger than life and Eisenberg just not grandiose enough.
And I watched the extended version. It was too long. could have cut 45 minutes to an hour out of it

This is one that has grown on me over the years, and is one of the only Wes movies that I can stomach. Don't remembering liking it much when it first came out, but tried it again several years ago and keep coming back to it. Hard to believe that it was Schwartzman's first acting, and I think they went through about 1600 kids to get who they wanted for Max. This is one I will end up buying, and I need to start digging through the bonus features for. I still haven't seen the Royal Tenenbaums, so this revisit was to remind me that I did like Anderson's early stuff, and maybe that will give me a good springboard to watch that one.
House (1977):
Seriously, what the ####?? That was also my wife's reaction as she walked in about 1/2 way through the movie to say good night. There really is no easy way to try to describe this one. Suspiria mashed with Evil Dead with a creepy soundtrack from a bad kids show? I will be honest, this one will be filed under movies I am glad I watched just for the ####ed up ride, but I didn't enjoy that ride much. Not to say I didn't enjoy some scenes and laugh a couple times, but it was mostly toward the end, and it took a bit of energy to not turn this one off last night. After looking around this morning a little I found a line where the director "meant it to look like the raw content from a child's bad dream". In that way it was a 100% success, it just was a nightmare I didn't enjoy being a part of. I am guessing there were some interesting things here about how the character is dealing with grief, fractured families, and having to grow up, but the packaging kept me far enough away that I couldn't engage with that level of it. I did think to myself that I should have some weed for this, but I think that would have freaked me out more.

Also, my son and I have been watching the older Batman movies. He just displayed an interest in the character, and I thought those movies weren't quite as dark, so I figured we should start with the Keaton ones. I think he liked them alright, but I could tell that he was getting antsy. He did say something about there being a lot of talking in these movies, which I guess compared to the Avengers movies he loves just about any other movies might feel that way. We did laugh a lot at the horribleness of Batman and Robin, and sadly I think that was his favorite of the bunch (I was afraid to ask) because of us joking around with it and he did say "well, at least this one has more action".

Couldn't sleep last night and got glued to this from the start. DeNiro was pretty darn entertaining in his role and the relationship he had with the younger cast was heartwarming. Hathaway was really good in her scenes with DeNiro, otherwise it was rather standard stuff. But they were good together. I was enjoying it more than I thought I would right until the ending. Way way too abrupt. I don't necessarily need clear concise resolution of every single issue, but I think this went too far off into not resolving anything really.
Best scene was at the bar though. When Hathaway says that men aren't men anymore, they are boys. Her generation is the take your daughter to work generation and the boys got left behind. Now girls can be women but men seem to be becomming boys. I thought that was a massively powerful and true statement. Gave a deeper heart to the movie.
Not a guy movie at all. Not a romantic comedy either. But something different. Might be a solid couple movie. Give is a B. Very surprised how much I liked it.

because of positive comments in the FFA after yelchin's death, saw Alpha Dog over the weekend... plot reminded me of Bully, but less Larry Clark, which is good. had no idea Cassevetes Jr was a director too- love his dad and Jr did a solid job telling this sad story. great cast of young male actors- thought Yelchin (rip) was fantastic, but Timberlake was a real eye-opener- great performance. movie felt similar to Brick too, which I preferred but which had more narrative room to roam not being tied to a true-case. definitely enjoyed the film, even if it was brutal watching 90+ minutes just wanting the kid to get away.

Perhaps because guys realize that they've been sold a bill of goods (working hard to support a wife and kids only to get screwed when the relationship doesn't work out) when it comes to being a 'man'.

I'm not usually one to jump on the, "this was the worst movie ever," train. For example, I liked both of the new Superman reboots as they are common fodder here. But this movie. Ugh. I can't find one thing redeeming about it in any way. Might just be the worst movie I've ever seen - and the best part is I haven't even finished it yet. I've watched it over the span of 6 days, in pieces, because I just can't stnad to keep watching it. I can't believe how they have damaged the Fantastic Four. The first movie was good enough to build off of but the last two have been just dreadful.

still his best work without question. it's the blueprint for all his movies, with the exception of "Fantastic Mr Fox", in terms of style and pacing. It's still original and fresh for me. it's in my top 10 movies ever.
I watched Bad Moms and Sausage Party on the weekend. I rarely go to movies and but I also rarely have a date so I lived it up
Both funny. Bad moms is a bit of a chick flick - probably 80% females in attendance. it doesn't paint men in a good light but if you can't laugh at yourself. A couple LOL scenes and I'm a fan of Kunis so give it a 3.5 out of 5.
Sausage fest has to be the most rude movie I've ever seen. it as funny and easy to miss some of the jokes and insults being thrown around so I may need to watch again. A crazy sce

Wife and I binge watched it last year. We are excited for season 3. Great great show.
Batman v Superman coming tomorrow from Amazon. Snagged the Extended BD for 12 bucks new with Prime.
I loved Suicide Squad and really felt Man Of Steel was solid. So this movie should ring true for me.

Saw this yesterday. Solid 8.8 I was skeptical when I heard Abrams wasn't directing but not to worry as it turned out.
Really liked it except for the pretty typical alien bad guy (like you said). The effects were way great, and I thought it made the movie. In most cases I couldn't tell if it was great camera work, special effects or a combo of the two. Sofia Boutella is pretty good as the alien good guy. I just want to smack Simon Pegg every time he's on screen, which is too much. I think who ever is writing the Doc McCoy lines needs to step away from the Deforest Kelly straight up imitation and give the character some new lines other than "Dammit Jim...". As mentioned, great movie.

Nope, just groceries swearing and hitting on all the stereotypes like you'd expect. yeah... kind of what I'm expecting.
the trailers seem to cover the bit- the awakening- that would appear to carry the funniest possibilities... kinda funny, but even petered out during those 90 seconds IMO. the f-bombs didn't help.

While I liked "Grand...", I didn't think it was Wes distilled. It was a slight departure certainly from his usual stuff. "Moonrise..." was good but also a slightly lesser work. I thought "Rushmore" was a spirited and original comedy with fine performances from Schwartzman and Murray.

We got to the first two of the newer Batman movies and my son really liked them. He said they were a bit better than the old ones.

"The Commitments". Never seen it before a few days ago so I think it had really limited release & not because it wasn't popular. Don't know why. Older(1991?) movie about a guy in Ireland puts together an R & B band. Ends up with all white band. Story is good & music even better!!!

Yeah, fixed the type-o. I just don't get the ending. The buildup to the engine car awesome. Movie did a great job of immersing you in this train world and then....... Ed Harris is The Architect from Matrix 2, and doesn't do it nearly as entertaining. The entire scene was stupid and tried to be so powerful and fell flat. I thought the whole buildup was going to be that the train was running itself at that point and the main guy was long dead from something and the whole thing was a charade. I don't mind being wrong though. It just really fell flat for me.
Tilda Swinton was extremely good, I agree.
