My son has been begging me to watch "The Angry Birds Movie". He liked it and he's 6. That is all.
pretty sure I saw this too.... in the theaters. yeah- both kids liked it. but they like anything. we saw Storks over the weekend... better than Angry Birds IMO. (that being said- I have no memory of Angry Birds other than being pretty sure that I saw it).

i was considering "Storks" with him or possibly "Kubo". He'd seen "Kubo" when it came out. I made a financial decision that $3 for "Angry Birds" was better value than $40 of "Storks". Especially when I could goof off on the co

I'm with you, it's just not that good. The stories were not well constructed, the characters were not even the main characters in their world... They were never the agents of their own change, the entire series, they reacted instead of acted.

Did not like.
Same here. I tried watching it a few years ago after seeing it on many peoples favorite lists but I didn't make it through the series. I watched about 4 or 5 episodes and while they were ok, it didn't seem like something I needed to continue with.

Must also defend Depp (and Burton) for Sweeney Todd (the score of which, for my money, is the finest musical achievement of the last half of the 20th C, all rock&roll included). The best star turn ever in a musical. He is the 4th person i've seen perform the role and - tho admittedly aided by the recording studio - blew em all away.

Two popcorn movies:

Jason Bourne

The action is solid, but MAN is this dialogue terrible. Any time something needs to be said, it's said with as little nuance as possible with as few syllables as possible. I'm not looking for Shakespeare here, but this is third grade level. All said, it's a fun action flick overall.

The Magnificent Seven

I like movies that know what they are and deliver that. This movie is no special in any way, but I still recommend it to western fans.

Three more:

Brooklyn

Sincere, sweet period film about a young Irish woman's relocation to America. Very good, and a nice family flick if you have young teens.

Ex Machina

Saw this in the theater and loved it, and I wanted Mrs. Dogg to watch it. Fantastic. Even better than I remembered. One of the smartest sci-fi films ever made.

Keanu

Love this movie. Hilarious and original. All the George Michael stuff cracked me up.

Agree with #1 and #2. Brooklyn was in my top 10 of movies from last year and Ex Machina is a real thought provoking movie.

However, I had real issues with Keanu. Just not funny (with the exception of the George Micheal bit and the Keanu Reeves bit). It was a disappointment for me compared to their show

Funny, because Key & Peele's show is hit or miss for me.

Swiss Army Man:  I liked it a lot. Delivers laughs, tears and WTFs.  A lot of people will probably hate it/love it for the farts alone.   It was a lot bigger than that to me.

"Deepwater Horizon"

Really good!  A little slow for the first half, but blazing good second half.  The special effects were amazing!

Good stuff showing the real historical testimony footage of the follow up investigation as the movie ends and a dedication to those who were killed during this incident.

Scenes with John Malkovich are the best.  I wish he were in more movies.  This movie makes you angry at BP, and makes you feel terrible for the men who were fighting to survive to get off the rig as it was going up in flames.

Good movie.
Was a 45-minute stretch that was masterful movie-making.  Saw it on IMAX.  Was intense.

It was a solid B+.  I almost feel like there was an even better movie in there.  Like they could have juxtaposed more of the aftermath in some fashion.  Either the trial or the ecological disaster.

As is?  Safe but like I said intense.  Do think it needs to be seen in the theater for full effect.

It's similar to American Sniper but I liked this one more.

Movie left me with a lot of questions.  Not sure how much was dramatized but Kurt Russell's character comes off as a buffoon.  Was that the intention?  Didn't seem like it.  BP is the bad guy but Russell comes off as absent at the wheel in more then one occasion.

Was the cement test only 150K?  They bypassed that to save money?  Risked everything for marginal gains.  Seems like a similar story the past 15 years with big business.

Dano has been great.  But he did ruin There Will Be Blood.
Wow.  I can see not liking the character, but I think the acting is top notch from him.  Story is, he was the only one that could go toe to toe with DDL and put up with his ####, so he had to play both of the brothers.

Have you seen "Love and Mercy"? He was a dead ringer for Brian Wilson
Don't really like the Beach Boys, and know nothing about them, so I haven't watched it yet.  I did become more interested in the movie after listening to his interview on WTF and hearing him talk about acting and that role.

The Kid - 8/10

Chaplin's first full length movie got a new, outstandingly done Criterion release this year. It looks amazing.

And it's a really sweet, fun, sad, and exciting film.

Man of the Year - Robin Williams' take on a comedian running for President.  Always enjoyed the first act of this movie but the second act just never does it for me.  The conspiracy part of the story took away from the hilarity of the election.  Williams was Williams - god I miss him.  And watching this movie these days is ....... a little too close to home?

Notting Hill - won't lie - a solid RomCom is usually entertaining to me, and Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant are perfect in this one.  Best character though, by far, is the roommate.

Deadpool - yup, watched it again because it's just an awesome movie.  I hope they nail the sequel.

Drum Line - crappy stupid should have been a made for TV disney channel movie.... but.... the music is great.  And while Nick Cannon is annoying and can't act and you want to punch him every time he is on screen, it does have a young Zoe Zaldana which makes all good things good.

Castaway - I tried Andy, I really did.  It was on.  I flipped to it.  He was sorting out the boxes he found and........ nope couldn't do it.  I don't know why I hate this movie so much.  Hanks did a solid and truly believable acting job, no doubt about that.  But I really just can't enjoy anything about this movie. To each his own I guess.

I'm glad you tried. I have plenty of movies other people like that baffle me that they do.

hmmm- didn't know there was so much hate for Castaway... I genuinely enjoyed it. main quibble was Hanks being a bit too Hanksy ("I make fire", etc). That plane crash was nightmarish and I've always been a sucker for a lost on a deserted island story-line.

Ghostbusters (2016)

I found it to be ok. My kids will probably love it. Turning ghostbusting into a martial art is nearly unforgivable. Seems like they said, "You know what would make Ghostbusters better? If it was Men In Black."

"Yeah, but with kung fu."

"Definitely. Well that's done... Smoke a bowl?"

Stoker - 7/10

The director of Oldboy influenced by Hitchcock's "Shadow of a Doubt". It's a very stylized movie. I like the look of it and the ending does make it worth it. But it could have been better.

10 Cloverfield Lane - 7.5/10

A fun ride and Goodman is as awesome as he always is.

Crimson Peak - 5/10

Let me sum it up this way - it only stops being boring when it starts being stupid.

It features a derivative storyline with a twist (if it's even meant to be a twist) telegraphed a hundred miles away.

Avoid this and watch Devil's Backbone or Pan's Labyrinth again instead.

I liked it, but I think it's about frame of mind. It was sold as a horror film, but it's a spooky romance.

Boondock Saints:  I can't believe I've never seen this movie.  It's great!!! Super funny.  Has to be Willem Dafoe's best work.  You can see they kind of based the Will Graham from TV Hannibal on his character.  How it flowed non-linearly was cool.  Can't say enough how funny it was too.  Movies devoted to laughs and gags elicit a fraction of what this movie did.  And a young/clean Daryl from TWD!  What?!

Took the wife to see Girl on a train today... For those that haven't read the book, like my wife & I, it is a little hard to follow as they have 5 main characters that they are wrapping into the story... At the end it all becomes clear.. but as the wife said, will need to see it again now that we know What the heck was going on to fully grasp it...

Still giving it a 3.5 out of 5 as I thought it was well done even though it loses you at times.

The Accountant

I prefer something a little more intellectually stimulating in the movie theater, but this movie wasn't awful.

There's a minor twist (if you want to call it that, since you can see it coming pretty early in the movie), but nothing that will keep you on the edge of your seat.  Then there is another unexpected twist at the very end of the movie that has little to do with the plot.

This movie has a running time of 2h 8m, but it moves nicely and doesn't feel like a movie that long.

I can't figure out what kind of career Anna Kendrick is going to have.   She's made more bad movies than good, which surprises me she still gets roles like this one.   I love her from a distance.  I have a sense that if I knew her personally I would hate her, but I dig her looks and would love to do dirty things to her.

I liked this movie.  It was entertaining,  It's not an award winner, but fun.

Frozen Ground.

Pretty good flick, based on actual events around the serial killer Robert Hansen in Alaska in the 80's/90's.

Chocolate Strawberry Vanilla - (amazon prime) haven't watched this yet  but looks creepy. I have added a few films from this list onto my watchlist.

Chocolate Strawberry Vanilla (didn’t hit US soil until earlier this year, though it was initially released in Australia in 2014) is one deeply disturbing flick that features what I would consider a top five performance. Not top five relative to the genre, or relative to this year, I mean top five, all-time greatest performances. Glenn Maynard’s work is awe-inspiring, and although the story is interesting, heartbreaking, and humorous, it’s all about Maynard. It’s his show, and he doesn’t disappoint. A new personal favorite, Maynard and Chocolate Strawberry Vanilla will no doubt earn placement on a great deal of fan lists.

Odd Man Out - 7.5/10

Directed by Carol Reed (The Third Man) and starring James Mason, this movie uses really well the nuances of black and white film and has a surprisingly brave ending.

New Jeff Bridges bank robber movie co-starring Chris Pine and Ben Foster. Not special, but I enjoyed it.
I loved this movie.  Other than Jeff Bridges going a bit over the top, I thought it was very good.  Ben Foster was really great.

In my top two or three movies I've seen this year.

Yeah, seems like Foster is always great. While Chris Pine gave a nice effort, he couldn't match Foster's talent here.

Agreed, definitely top 5 for me this year. I really loved how they wrapped up the third act. It could have gone a lot of different ways. I liked the path they took.
