How did a white guy end up defending China from a monster in 1100 A.D.?
Looking at the trailers from this weekend, it would appear that Damon even tries to rock an accent. While I like the guy, he's not really an actor that I would believe with any accent beyond his withered Boston one.
...which is hilarious, because making the white dude British doesn't make the casting any less weird.

To me, this looks like yet another movie where the heroic white person saves the poor minority people. For example:

HOORAY FOR THE WHITE GUY!
PLEASE SAVE ME, KIND WHITE LADY!
THE WHITE GUY WILL RESCUE US!

I finally saw The Lobster - 6/10
There were lots of funny moments but the understated dead pan humor wore thin after a while. I liked the first half of the movie more than the second half.

Now You See Me 2

I will fully admit that I really like the first one.  It was just.... different.  I enjoyed it.  This one....... the only good scene in the entire movie was when Lex Luthor made it rain upside down.  The rest was just a big mess.  Too bad too, because the whole magic in the real world thing could be a decent few movies but this one was just bad.

I enjoyed both efforts, although admittedly they are total fluff. I wouldn't have watched these if my son wasn't such a fan.

TCM Picks of the Week

Going with a little lighter fare this week

Sat 5:30 PM: The Quiet Man

John Wayne and John Ford but it's no western. It's a romantic comedy about an ex-boxer retracing his heritage in Ireland. It won John Ford his 4th Oscar for best director and contains some beautiful technicolor cinematography of  Ireland.

Sun 6:30 AM: Gold Diggers of 1933

This might not be your style. It's a musical. It's very old. However, it's a quick fun sexy pre-code song and dance show starring William Powell, Joan Blondell, Ginger Rogers and others. There is no shortage of sexy women and sexy clothing.
Not only these coming up this weekend, but an Altman doubleheader tonite on TCM - The Player @ 9:45 and the mythically-forgotten Nashville @ midnite

Watching Vertigo (recorded off of TMC a few weeks ago). I hadn't seen it in quite some time. While it's still not my favorite film, I forgot how beautiful it was. I'm not sure I've seen a movie that looks this good. The colors are unreal.

February is TMC's Oscar Month. Starting 2/1 they will be showing Oscar winners 24/7. They are doing it in alpha order this year. So many amazing films that I don't even know where to begin with recommendations. The two I am most looking forward to

Thursday at 6:00 pm The Bad and the Beautiful

Loosely based on real Hollywood royalty like David O. Selznick, Alfred Hitchcock and Judy Garland, this melodrama is a look behind the lights of Hollywood. Kirk Douglas plays a ruthless producer who uses and abuses every actor, director and writer around. Gloria Grahame, **** Powell and Lana Turner are just some of the stars he butts head with as we see the rise and fall of a Hollywood icon. This is quintessential Hollywood with glamour, sex and stars.

Friday at 11:30 am The Best Years of Our Lives.

Consider it like The Deer Hunter of WW2 films. It is an emotional look at how the war impacted the men returning from the war. The cast is first rate: Frederic March, Myrna Loy, Dana Andrews, Theresa Wright and non-actor Harold Russell. Russell was a US soldier that had his hands blown off and replaced with hooks. He would go on to win an Oscar for his work in this film. It is one of the biggest commercial successes in film history and won 8 Oscars.

Calvary

I've had this on the DVR for a year and never watched it.  And there were about a half dozen times I thought about deleting it without watching.

This is one of those movies I might need to watch again to understand the purpose of a couple of characters, or get a better understanding of particular trial they were going with.  For example I wanted to hear the conversation between the daughter an Chris O'Dowd's character at the end of the movie and we don't get to hear that exchange.  Was she there to forgive him?  Brendan Gleeson was pretty fantastic.

7/10

I watched two Melissa McCarthy flicks over the weekend.

Spy   /   The Boss

I got through 10 minutes of Spy before I had to turn it off.  It was unwatchable.  Which made me think why bother watching The Boss, but I gave it a shot.

The Boss had some unexpected laughs and was funny throughout.  Not laugh out loud funny, but outrageous and stupid funny.  I surprised myself by how much I enjoyed it.   It might have just been because I like to look at Kristen Bell.

Spy  1/10

The Boss 5/10

i saw this in the theaters and remember liking it. it's humorous despite the subject matter often not being too funny. while it's not a explicit martin mcdonagh film or play, it feels very much like it is. martin's brother sounds a lot like him to me.

I really liked Spy. I thought it was funny. And Statham was great.

The preview for it looked like it might be good.  Argh, was kind of looking forward to it.

Caught "Moonlight" over the weekend. It's a surprising movie in that it wasn't at all what I thought it would be. Really strong acting, writing. I can see why some think it should be Best Picture this year.

Also, started "Spectre" with Daniel Craig's possibly last turn as 007. It's a surprisingly dull movie for the first hour. I'm not sure that I'll finish it.

spectre isn't worth finishing, IMO.

looking forward to trying out Moonlight.

fwiw- 9yo floppinho and 5yo floppinha are featured extras in DeNiro's new film The Comedian, which is not very good (in spite of the genius on-screen presence of my kids).

The Edge of Seventeen.

Just a choppy mess.  Really don't know what the fuss was about on this one.  Think the critics got a pc-boner due to an asian-male love interest.

Will say Hailee Steinfeld is going to make the jump to a big time actress.

5/10

Meh.  I like historical pieces so we went.  I've come to not much care for  Michael Keaton.  Was a big fan going way back to "Night Shift" but I can't remember the last time I saw a movie of his that I liked a lot.  I liked Spotlight, and thought he was "good" in it.  I just checked his IMDB page, there really isn't a lot to see there.

I had no idea Ray Croc was such a douche.  Probably not a bad rental, but if you were thinking of seeing it in the theater, it's definitely worth saving whatever your local cinema charges and getting it on TV sometime later in the year.  On a positive note, Nick Offerman was quite good.

of course.

but they're not at any level that requires more than just a little bit of extra effort by my wife, who takes them to auditions. my son loves it, and developed an interest through his public school where performing arts are omnipresent- she's doing it because he wants to (not vice-versa). the daughter goes along because she's little and everything is equally interesting to her at this point. if it stops being fun or interesting for either of them, we stop. if it turns into one of them booking something really big (my son has had a couple of pilot auditions), then we have to think through what to do.

I know it's just opinions and such, and I don't know why I obsess about it when there are movies/shows that just aren't clicking for me that seem to be damn near universally loved.  Feel the need to way overthink it and try to figure out what they are seeing or connecting with that I am not and why that might be.  That is happening this week with me and Fargo Season 2.  I have watched 8 episodes now, and will finish up the last 2 today.   It is still a great looking show with some great characters and acting, but I am not liking it as much as Season 1.  I am sure a large part is my dislike of Kirsten Dunst and chubby Matt Damon's characters.  I just clench up whenever they are on screen.  I will think about it more, and maybe find the Fargo TV show thread and go in there so I am not bogging this down, just was curious what elevated S2 above S1 for people?

It's the most overratted show in recent memory.

imo, Fargo S.2 is better than season one and ranks on the same level as True Detective S.1 for me.  Fargo 2 was great and I loved Dunst and CMD, as well as The Conjuring dude and Sam MAlone.  Black guy for the win, btw.  Sorry you're not able to enjoy the show KP, not sure there is a cure for what ails ya.
