A Cure for Wellness

Wasn't sure what to expect going into this week one, but kinda predictable and at least a half an hour too long IMO.  Meh.  2/5

Logan Lucky

Subjected to this on flight to Hawaii and even without sound, it was abysmal.  One armed Kylo Ren was almost as bad as redneck Daniel Craig. 1/5.  Boogity boogity.
Worth watching just to have a sense of what Hollywood believes "fly-over country" is like.

Interesting. It's set in Charlotte, North Carolina. I didn't thInk States on the coast or cities with 800k people were flyover country

Well they couldn't make it totally obvious.

But make no mistake, if you live in the midwest or the south, this is what Hollywood thinks of you.

Don't you think there are films that portray all parts of the country in both good and bad light? Some of the most awful portrayals I've seen are of New Yorkers.

Sure.  This one just kind of stuck in my craw though as being so cartoonish in it's portrayal of country folk that it would make Buford T. Justice blush.

I thought they were always kinda fair with NYers....like the sewer guy in Die Hard 2 that knew about Warren G Harding.

Wasn't that Die Hard 3?

There's just very standard tropes that all storytellers often use. Big city people are often sophisticated like Sex in the City or selfish deviants like Wolf of Wall Street. Midwest/rural/southerners are backwards and dumb or good hearted backbone of America types.

you forgot the "aaay, fuhgeddabowdit" lovable dopey working class ny-er.

Downsizing C+ A mess. Started out fine but fell apart 2/3rds The way through.

Christop Waltz was great, but everybody else meh.

Inexplicably stayed up late and rewatched Once. Equally inexplicably still love this movie in spite of it being the slightest, barely strung together music video patchwork plot, baldfaced excuse to get swell season in a movie. Which all just somehow works perfectly.

ETA... That said, It's no Mustang Island

The more I think about it, the worse my grade gets

The female lead (who BTW was really annoying) was very religious, but didn't see the rapture in front of her?

And when the boat was crossing the fjord in Norway, the water was so calm. A tiny wave would have knocked that boat over in an instant.

And I thought it was really unrealistic that the super rich would not be more harsh toward the poor. It was just random crap all over the place

Down to a D+

Three Billboards

Movie seemed like it was made in the late 80's early 90's which gave it a genuine throwback feel.

Woody, Frances and Rockwell are all on their game.  Rockwell will surely get a supporting-nod for this.

8/10.

Definitely in my top 10 of year.

American Made--enjoyed this movie. Tom Cruise is right in his wheelhouse with this type of role. It was a fun movie, but one that mixes fact and fiction quiet liberally.

Mountain Between Us---wow, what an absolute piece of tripe this movie was. I am not giving anything away with this review because if you have seen a preview, you have seen the movie. Everything about this movie was just a setup to get to the next scene and you have to totally suspend reality to even find this movie credible. They literally would have been dead within 3 days from hypothermia, but no, lets walk through knee deep snow for 3 WEEKS in dress pants and no snow shoes. Don't even get me started on the level of frost bite they would have had on their faces and extremities  Let's not even address the fact the high altitude would have made moving around at all, a complete chore, but hey, lets go run around like it is a weekend hike. There is a scene where they actually eat snow--yes, eat snow--when in real life that would do you in right there.I mean they are big name actors in a big studio production--couldn't they have hired a survival guy for an afternoon to you know give some hints. You know this movie started out as an inter-racial love story and then someone said, "Hey, let's make it an action movie with a plane crash," and away it went. It didn't help that I hated Kate Winslet's character throughout this movie and it just got worse as it went along.

But, but...the mountain peak cougar

Also watched A Mountain Between Us, the plane crash movie with Winslet and Elba. When a movie is caught Between being a survival movie it a love story you're in trouble. Cliches abound in both directions to the point where I started rooting for lack of survival for either of them. Would not recommend at all.

couldn't agree more!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  Was hoping both would freeze in mid sentence.  In that instance I give it a 1 out of 5.

watched it two days ago.  horrible in all respects.

oh sure- lots of uresolved issues that needed addressing in the first Goon. glad to hear it's ok... I'd have guessed trainwreck.

with friends over NYE, got to talking about noah baumbach, and I remembered liking his second (after loving his first, Kicking and Screaming)... Mr Jealousy. watched it again- a bit slight, but some genuinely funny moments and worth the watch.
you are seriously on a roll dude.  Your 1st sentence is a masterpiece & has me absolutely rolling.  thanx man.  keep it up.

Split

I finally had a chance to see this movie yesterday.  The premise is interesting and I think McAvoy did a pretty good job.  The ending felt compressed like a bad edit job.  I liked the connection to Unbreakable at the end.  3.5/5.

Lady Bird

I had heard great things about it so my expectations were through the roof. I didn't leave disappointed. I can see how some dudes may not like a movie about a teen girls coming of age story, but it was a good story and really glad I went. I I loved the girl that played the best friend of the main character. There was something very common about her, but she was very endearing.  Really liked all the characters even Laurie Metcalfe who I went into it thinking she would suck the life out of the movie.  It had a satisfying ending too.

It's not a great masterpiece, but it's really really good.

Strange Weather

I love Holly Hunter. I don't think she's hot or anything,  I just really like her in most of what I've seen her in.  She typically plays strong female characters. I really liked her performance in this movie. The story was on the depressing side, and not a story that I suspect will stick with you, but I liked it.  I liked her in it.  Glad I didn't pay to see it in the theater, but happy to sit through it on a cold winter night with nothing else to do.

Call Me By Your Name

If Moonlighting or Brokeback Mountain made you uncomfortable this won't be for you.

Still have a few of the major releases to see but so far this is my favorite flick of the year.

I can't imagine Timothee Chalamet not getting an Oscar-nod.  He should win.  That he is only 22 makes it that much more impressive.  Armie Hammer was also very good.  As was Michael Stuhlbarg.

It's a simple story but executed so well.  It's sophisticated.  It's sensual.  It's Northern Italy.

Everything from the set design/scenery to the music will stick with you.  I'll be watching this again soon and think this will be seen as a classic in time to come.

9/10

Was it Bruce Willis that made you uncomfortable about Moonlighting?

The ones that are way at the top of my all-time list are:  Boogie Nights, Jackie Brown, The Ice Storm, and The Sweet Hereafter.

I also love Gattaca, Starship Troopers, Austin Powers, Good Will Hunting, Princess Mononoke, Grosse Point Blanke, Lost Highway, Donnie Brasco, Men In Black, The Game, Chasing Amy, hell - even Titanic.   I am betting there are others I am forgetting as well.
Yeah, I love movies from the 90s, and that was a spectacular year. Movies you didn't mention:

Deconstructing Harry
The Full Monty
In the Company of Men
L.A. Confidential
Lost Highway
Fast, Cheap and Out of Control
Wag the Dog
The Game
Contact
Face/Off
Cube
Cop Land
Donnie Brasco
Mimic
G.I. Jane
Chasing Amy
Private Parts
The Boxer
Affliction
Insomnia

Saw some movies in the theater this holiday:

The Shape of Water

LOVED this movie. How many filmmakers have made two movies as good as this and Pan's Labyrinth? Guillermo del Toro is a visual genius, and this could be his best movie by a mile. Spectacular.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi

Pretty solid and lots of good humor. Thumbs up.

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri

A heavy movie that reminds me of the Coen brothers' work. Highly recommended, but will weigh on you for days.

Jumanji

My son and his cousins wanted to see it. Gotta say it wasn't bad. The Rock and Jack Black are always entertaining.

Looking forward to all 4 of these!

Good to see a review here.  I cringe when I see scenes from The Shape of Water and I think it looks a bit silly.   Not a huge Del Toro fan, but will still give it a go since I know it will be up for more and more awards.

The wife is dying to see shape of water, so I'll see it; but I think I'm in the same camp as you. Feel like I'm over del Toros vision for monsters- they all kind of look the same at this point.

Anything with Michael Shannon is pretty much must see for me at this point.
