I am not usually an advocate of the remakes and reboots, but one that I would be on board with (of course if it's done right) would be Running Man.  The core idea is great and still relevant, but those f/x and puns are ####in' horrible.   As long as they don't go the Total Recall route and do a lame pg-13 version, it could be great.  

I'm really surprised this hasn't been redone, even if it was some low level Jason Statham joint.  The puns would still likely be bad though, given JS history.

As much as I liked Hunger Games, it didn't scratch the itch that a good Running Man movie would.

That movie went SO far away from the source material. And not in a good way - it was terrible.

Admittedly, I haven't seen it since I was maybe 10 years old but I loved that movie when I was younger. Are you saying was never good or doesn't hold up?

Part of it is that I loved the novella King wrote. It was grim and dark. The movie cartooned it up. Ahnuld was the furthest thing from the protagonist in the book.

So I have a built-in bias for reasons that have nothing to do with the quality of the film, but I also think it was poorly done even by 80s cheeseball-action movie standards (& I thought so then, too). And I LIKED many 80s cheeseball-action movies. I just thought this one was bad.

One difference between you & I is that I was in my late 20s when the movie came out. If I were a kid, I probably would have liked it better when it was released.

Blade Runner:

I watched the original again (well, the Final Cut).  How ####in good is this movie??  One of those that just gets better and better the more I watch it.  I just wanted a refresher before watch BR 2049 (hopefully this weekend?).  I am curious how they handle what the FC proves in the sequel.

Reading a little bit about the meaning of white unicorns in dreams, I learned that most interpretations say it represents hope and/or a new and better direction.

This jibes with Deckard's feelings toward Rachel. She's more human than any other human he's come across and makes him love - perhaps for the first time.

The unicorn is Rachel. Deckard is not dreaming about her when he's at the piano...he's daydreaming about her. She is something that's finally pure and idealistic in his rotten, un-empathetic world. When Gaff makes his origami version, he's telling Deckard "Your fairy tale won't last. She's a fantasy,  as is the relationship you're pursuing." Gaff doesn't know Deckard's dream because Deckard isn't a Replicant. But they both understand the symbolism of a unicorn.

I think Gaff placing the origami unicorn is coincidental. It does show that Gaff understands the meaning. I'm not sure if he's taunting Deckard or is hopeful for him.

I say all that to simply reiterate my belief that Deckard is human and the story works best that way. Just my opinion, of course.

This all adds to the brilliance of the movie.  

I was listening to the Cine-Files podcast of BR today. (have I mentioned that podcast to you guys yet?? )  One of the guys said that his theory was that Gaff was the Blade Runner and Deckard is the replicant.  He went on to say that he had a chance to interview Scott once and he asked him if Deckard was a replicant.  Scott asked why he thought that and he pointed to the FC and Gaff leaving the unicorn at the end and supposedly Scott said "you are right".   Could be a story he likes to tell, or Scott could have just been saying "you are right" to the fact that Gaff leaves him the unicorn.  Who knows.  

He also said of course he forgot to ask him if Gaff was a Blade Runner....

Scott is the only major player in the franchise that has definitively come out with that opinion.

Personally, I think Scott is a bit of a self important dope.

WW isn't a perfect movie. And it's not as entertaining as Deadpool, Logan, or Spider Man: Homecoming.

But here's what WW nailed:

• They managed to cast a beautiful actress and almost never sexualized her.
  
• The emotional material was very good, and many comic book movies fail at this.
  
• Wonder Woman succeeded at creating a fish out of water hero that really cares about humanity. See Snyder's Superman for failure.
  
• WW looked great, and many comic book movies look cheesy.
  

I didn't like Deadpool at all. It wasn't nearly as funny as I thought it would be and the main character was meh.

Spiderman Homecoming was better than Deadpool but barely above average.

I haven't seen Logan, though I hear a lot of good things about it.

I really liked Wonder Woman. Gal Gadot just nailed the role.

unicorn is in his dream, gaff knows what's in his dream... iirc, knowing about dreams and memories in replicants is discussed in the movie. what you're saying is that all of that is irrelevant to what's shown in the movie- but that we should really accept outside the movie sourced dream associations of unicorns. not me. not gunna do it.

Must see movies in general, or must see as it worth it to drop the $20-30/person to see it in the theater?

Love it or hate it, Dunkirk is the one that I thought of right away.  That was a movie that begged to be seen in the theater.   Other than that, I would say that most others I could think of are more drama type movies that you don't need to see in the theater.  If you have a good setup at home, most of the blockbuster types that people think are worth to pay the $ are just as good at home.

It wasn't in his dream. It was in his daydream. And it doesn't make it irrelevant - it's only relevant to Rachel. It's a red herring when it comes to Deckard.

And if Deckard is a Replicant then the events of 2049 have no meaning since the whole point is that Deckard and Rachel, a human and android, had a baby.

i tried, because i really dont care for the movie except DDL's performance (in which i honestly believe his construct was imitating an oil well) and i'm uncomfortable disliking "classics", but i had an oldman fall yesterday and took a pill and that wiped me out about a half hour in.

Re-watching The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance and more convinced then ever at it's greatness. It's damn near some kind of parable for the modern gun debate. Stewart is liberal America- the lawyer. The Marshall is a perfect stand in for the way the Broward police are being portrayed. Wayne is conservative America who says the we  can't stop violence with laws- only with guns.

Early movie from director Taika Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok, Hunt For the Wilderpeople). If you liked Wilderpeople or you're a fan of Flight of the Conchords, you should definitely check out Eagle vs. Shark. Very silly and nicely done, it's both sweet and funny. Two thumbs way up.

Looking closer, seems like the contemporary critics panned it- especially Brando. It seems like they were really attached to the original which was a huge hit when most movie critics of the early 60s wound have been forming their love of movies. Also Gable had just died and so the critics seemed really critical of Brando's attempt at replacing him. 

Without that specific baggage, it seems like most enjoyed the film. I'll definitely check it out.
