New Scream was ok. Not anywhere close to the original but for being a 5th sequel, it was solid. Decent crowd with decent juice, As for COVID, at this point, I am exposed to it everyday at work so I'm finding it hard to even care about getting exposed more, I am never more in danger of catching COVID than I am at work  40 hours a week.

Anyone see Breakdown (97) with Kurt Russell? I hadn't heard of it but saw it on HBOMax and it sounded promising. Really good edge of your seat thriller. A couple's car breaks down on a lonely highway in the American West. A trucker kidnaps the wife and Russell has to go Liam Neeson to try and get his wife back. Lots of edge of your seat action and a gorgeous sun drenched dessert setting. Highly recommend.
Don't open your hood and leave your rig unattended. Dumb!

Godfather fans...the film will be shown in theaters for its 50th Anniversary beginning Feb. 25 and will take advantage of the recent 4K transfer supervised by writer-director Francis Ford Coppola.

The 4k ultra HD limited collector’s edition releases on March 22.

I snap preordered that. A no brainer.

Watched these on Netflix.  Both pretty awful

Hypnotic - the girl from Midnight Mass gets hypnotized by the guy from Life On Mars

Just Go With It - Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston comedy that wasn’t very funny (I guess this came out in 2011 but I have no recollection of it)

oh, my wife picked these BTW

Yeah I was to question what your expectations were exactly but then I saw the last comment.

for me the best part of the trilogy is Micheal's transformation in 1.  The aftermath wasn't as interesting to me.
Fair and I can’t argue with how magnetic Brando is as Don Vito. I really like the parallel structure of 2. Watching the rise of the father and fall of the son is fascinating to me. Love how it becomes an epic spanning so much time. But it’s picking hairs.

The Last Duel is on HBO Max now and it’s really freaking good. The second half especially. It’s Game of Thrones (minus the supernatural) meets Rashomon. As for the criticism of it being a MeToo movie, I guess. If having a rape and a fight to the death over it is MeToo than yes that is a key point of the movie. There’s so much more to what the movie is about thigh. The rape serves more as an inciting incident in the conflict between the two male leads than the central focus of the movie.

the Night House - good ghost movie that was close to being great.

Re-watched the Kid Detective (via Starz on Hulu) - little known dark comedy from 2020 that is worth seeking out. Think Encyclopedia Brown grown up and still trying to be a Detective.

The House (Netflix) - I like stop motion animation a lot, and seeing it used for a set of horror stories was really cool. The first story is the most interesting, the second the most creepy, and third most dramatic.

Speaking of Brando, I just finished the documentary, Listen to me Marlon. Really interesting since they used his own personal recordings to tell his own story. Just such a fascinating guy for so many reasons. Some great insight into his approach to acting, with obvious emphasis on Stella Adler. Any other good docs on him?

If anyone has the TCM app (free if you get TCM), check out The Mob (51). Broderick Crawford and Ernest Borgnine in a noir precursor to On the Waterfront. Crawford plays a cop undercover at the docks to try and weed out the violent racketeers.  It is rough and tumble, well made and the dialogue is leathery.

On the topic of TCM, pretty good lineup for MLK day tomorrow… The Defiant Ones with Sidney Poitier, Sounder with Cicely Tyson, and Nothing but a Man (a personal favorite).

A couple of Howard Alk’s documentaries on the schedule too, including 1971’s The Murder of Fred Hampton.

That looks like a nice lineup.

Speaking of TCM, I watched The Time Machine (1960) on it again yesterday. I never seem to get tired of that one.

Highly recommend HBO Max today. They have 2 docs from late 60s/early 70s. American Revolution Part 2 that chronicles the '68 Democratic Convention and it's aftermath among community organizers. It's a raw fly on the wall look at the Panthers, Chicago PD, the Young Patriots and middle class liberals. The other movie, also by Howard Alk, is The Murder of Fred Hampton. Just incredible glimpses from the inside.

Looks like they are also airing on TCM tonight

huge fan of the OG Rainbow Coalition - RPC was the only agent of change in that turbulent time that took on its own prolims (hello, 2022 - being a victim dont make you right) as strongly as it opposed its oppressors. had their patch on my obligatory fatigue jacket for yrs&yrs - wish i could find a new one.

i seen the Fred Hampton.....................NObody gets what a frikkin rock star this guy was. if MLK was the Chuck Berry & Malcolm X the Little Richard of the race race, then Fred Hampton was Hendrix, maaaan. i guess there's just not enough footage or eloquent-enough witnesses or whatever, but the FBI killed Rock when they iced that bastage. still watchin on TCM when i get the shovelin done

I linked the entire playlist, but yes, that is not to be missed.

The funny thing is, that's a really good cover of a really good song.

I haven't watched it for ages and just realized not long ago, seeing a still picture of the film, that Alex Winter a.k.a. Bill S Preston esq. was in it.
The Call were a really underrated band. And iirc, they were from Santa Cruz (aka Santa Carla), where the movie was filmed.

There’s a lot from 2021 I still need to see but so far it’s been a really good movie year. Lots of impressive stuff so far.

Phantom Thread - why didn't anyone tell me about this?! As close to a perfect movie as i've seen since Chinatown. I was thiiiis close to trembling throughout - and, at this age, i thought diabetes was the only thing that could do that - and finally did when the denouement came couched in a perfect evocation of The 6th. And i burst into tears at the dedication. Were i still producing growth hormone, i would watch it til i could play any portion in my head when i needed so. Exquisite, with a moist, glottal Q.

We saw The Power of the Dog over the weekend (at home).

Gorgeous. But thematically a bit limp for me.
Yeahhhh this really didn’t hit me as hard as it appears it did for others. Kinda felt like the ending was sort of obvious. It was a beautiful watch, just not an amazing movie.

Took my oldest daughter to see Scream last night.

As previously said, not as good as the original. A little slow to start, but picked up strong. Also a little sappy.

What I didn't care for was the end /reasoning. I felt throughout the movie I knew what was going on and I kind of did. But I felt I could have written a far better explanation and I felt the writer and director missed out on a big opportunity.

The best part of it was the updating of the original Scream’s critique of genre. This one added their commentary on the modern horror movement as well as mocking the sequel/reboot/requel. I also thought most of the new cast members were pretty strong. They let them shine and didn’t over use the classic characters. I liked it considering it was a 5th film in a horror franchise.

Being the Ricardos was a big nothing. It was fun watching everyone do their impressions but that can’t carry a 2 plus hour movie. It tried to be about major issues like communism, blacklist, the strict standards of the time, fidelity, etc. In the end it took no stands and had nothing to say about those issues (other than maybe thank goodness for the FBI and Hoover). It comes off like it was a leftover screenplay for a CBS miniseries circa 2000. Worst of all, it makes I Love Lucy and especially Lucille Ball come off as not funny.

I watched it last weekend also. I felt the same way. I just didn't like it. I didn't like the story, the characters, nothing really.
I liked it ok, so I think we felt differently. But the story felt hackneyed, obvious and limp. TBH,  I could've turned the sound off and still liked it- it looked that good. And I liked the way the Cumberbatch and Son character were handled once the Power of the Dog took effect and some of the power switched.

Street Gang: How We Got to Sesame Street - not sure how I missed this.  Sesame Street documentary on HBO....  Very interesting the fight they had with diversity and how some places didn't want to see it etc....    I feel like this show would become a hot button political pawn in todays environment.
