3 of my great loves in Lola, Laundrette & The Verdict (watched that last nite too, soooo love the creaking oakiness of everything about it, esp Newman's performance), as well as a movie that was so important to me (Sex, Lies & Videotape) emotionally that i'm afraid to watch it again. Not to mention old chestnuts like Sunshine Boys (oh, the timing!) and Deep Cover (oh, the overness!). a month well spent - you must weigh in on the Ricardos & 355. will def check Munich. i suppose you need the Peacock+ to see Vigil?

Tried to watch The Last Duel last night and didn't make it through. One of the most boring movies I've every seen.  Reviews are good so maybe it's just me, or my state of mind.

May, or may not decide to finish it at some point
Watched this over the weekend. Even though I liked it I was expecting more because of the great reviews. The last 30 minutes is the best part and they could easily have cut 20-30 minutes from the beginning sections. Other than the final duel the thing that stuck with me the most was the scene in court where the one guy says-" it's scientifically impossible to get pregnant from a rape".

I’ve never seen this movie

Its gets trashed a lot - mostly (I think) because people are angry that it beat Shawshank and Pulp Fiction for the Best Picture Oscar.

But its a great movie. Its very funny. Its touching. Sure it has flaws - but overall its excellent. I recommend it.

The Ricardos was very Sorkinish in structure. Kidman and Bardem didn't look much like Lucy and Desi but after the first couple of minutes I believed in them enough to enjoy the movie

355 was hot garbage with a confusing plot wrapped around a lame MacGuffin. If they recast the women with old men, it could have been an Expendables film.

Very curious how the first two held up...I loved them at the time, but have a sense theyi  mght feel dated.

Sex, Lies & Videotape held up pretty well buoyed by the four lead performances and the proto-Soderbergh technique

My Beautiful Laundrette wasn't as good as I remembered but was watchable for the nostalgia

i can honestly say that i have not rented a movie from blockbuster since they closed thier store by me take that to the bank brohans

I was going to tell you to find a Family Video or something, but I just saw they all closed last year too.

I had a blast working at FV and Blockbuster.    RIP video rental stores.

One of the best 80s/court/Newman movies
Judge: Summation?

Galvin: Well...You know, so much of the time we're just lost. We say, "Please, God, tell us what is right. Tell us what is true."

I mean there is no justice. The rich win; the poor are powerless. We become tired of hearing people lie. And after a time we become dead, a little dead. We think of ourselves as victims -- and we become victims. We become weak; we doubt ourselves; we doubt our beliefs; we doubt our institutions; and we doubt the law.
does this sound more like 1982 or 2022? nufced

Followed it up with starting The Rock, and I will finish that today.   Mixed feelings here too - Cage trying his best to ruin this movie too.

The Rock is so ludicrous but I still like it.

A few months ago had a 90's cage double feature with The Rock and Con Air and came away feeling woozy. If I'd managed to fit Face/Off in there I might have straight out felt like I was tripping.

I think I've seen Con Air once, but I have the vague feeling it's like Face/Off in that it know it's ridiculous too.   My battle with something like The Rock is that the plot has some serious ####, it looks like Harris and Connery have dialed into a serious movie...... then you have Cage running around Caging it up.     It's still fun as hell, it's just a weird mix in here.

Yeah, I know.   Talking about stuff more like Harris' motivations and the dead soldiers, not the super deadly green gas and the Hummer chase through SF.
lol... Harris will bring gravitas with him wherever he goes... including to this farting preacher clip. Connery clearly got the message about what this movie was- "welcome to the rock" may be one of my favorite line deliveries of all time.

Probably over thinking as I usually do, I just find the contrast amusing at the start of the movie b/t Harris and then our Nic intro in the lab.

And possibly the toughest field ever for a Best Actor Oscar:

Paul Newman - The Verdict

Dustin Hoffman - Tootsie

Jack Lemmon - Missing

Peter O'Toole - My Favorite Year

Ben Kingsley - Gandhi   (Winner)
great year- wow.

funny, I think of O'Toole (love that movie- "if I were drunk, could I do this?") in more of a supporting role than those other guys.

Damn, looks like AMC+ has a lot of movies I want to watch when I am looking where things are streaming - per this discussion, Con Air and Face/Off are on there.

Started up The Rock again.

Holy ####.  There is a scene where Cage goes from some high tech military room to what looks like the bathroom from Saw.    . I am obsessed with this.  What building were they in??

That line-up of performances is :chefskiss:  I agree with you regarding O'Toole, though I suppose if he's in a movie with Balki's cousin, he's going to be seen as the lead in any case.  Because I'm too lazy to look up who actually won, I'm wondering if he might have taken the supporting actor Oscar that year if he'd been put in that category instead.

Alan Swann never played a supporting role in his life

Nicholson's astronaut in Terms of Endearment won Supporting that year. Swannie woulda Zoroed Jack nekkid in that cat.

DC Cab. I havent seen this in years.

Mr. T, the Barbarian Twins, Gary Busey, Charley Burnett, sweet nylon jackets and a flamethrower.

6.7 might be a full point two high (or two low?), but totally worth the rewatch. lol

Newman should have won best actor that year.  A real tragedy.  IMO

Voyagers

Space Lord of the Flies is a good way to describe this movie. The best part of it is when Colin Farrell gets taken out if that tells you anything. 2/5

Lou Gossett Jr won for An Officer and a Gentleman, that was probably undeniable. Only the 3rd Black actor to win an Oscar, a powerful performance and that was the 3rd highest grossing movie of 1982 so it had all the momentum and social-cultural-popular weight behind it. O'Toole 0-7 for Oscars. He should have won for Lion in Winter IMO. I mean who is Cliff Robertson and what was Charly? I've never heard of either.
