Decisions, decisions. Going to go Criterion 4k shopping and get 3 or 4 with the 50% going on. On my list that is available at the store I am going to: The Trial, Night of the Living Dead, Last Picture Show, Walkabout, Don't Look Now, Malcolm X, The Princess Bride, and the Three Colors Trilogy. If I got Three Colors, I would only get 2 others, if I didn't I would get 4 (looking to keep it around $100).
I went with 3 pre-orders: Blast of Silence, The Last Picture Show and Mean Streets

I ended up with Last Picture Show, Princess Bride, Don't Look Now, and then pivoted to stick to the 70s research and grabbed the Barry Lyndon bluray.

Very fine choices. Barry Lyndon looks great. I love that movie, but it's maybe a movie that gets better on repeated viewings.

Based somewhat on @Andy Dufresne suggestion, I modified my Noirvember line-up a bit.

Spooky Season Meets Noir
  • Nightmare Alley (47)
  • Night of the Hunter
Lake and Ladd
  • This Gun for Hire
  • The Glass Key
  • The Blue Dahlia
Noir or Not?
  • To Have and Have Not
  • Detective Story
  • The Lost Weekend
UK Noirs
  • No Time for Pity
  • Odd Man Out
  • Hell Drivers
Directed by Robert Siodmak
  • The Killers
  • Criss Cross
  • Phantom Lady
Unforgettable Females
  • The Lady from Shanghai
  • Pickup on South Street
  • Mildred Pierce
  • Sudden Fear
Phillip Marlowe
  • Murder My Sweet
  • The Big Sleep (46)
  • The Long Goodbye
  • Farewell, My Lovely
  • The Big Sleep (78)

I am currently on Odd Man Out- directed by Carol Reed. He made The Third Man 2 years later and you can see the blue print here. This isn't the master piece The Third Man is but it's pretty damn close and you can see so much of that film in this. A must see for any noir fan.

Been a goal of mine the last 2 years to watch with intention

Been a goal of mine the last 2 years to watch with intention

I start off saying I'm going to watch nothing but Fellini and the next thing you know Jackie Chan is hanging off a ledge.
This is more me. I plan like 80s, but it usually turns into me watching something that pops into my mind instead. I had big plans for watching The Master the other night, and watched T2 instead.

I did get to rewatching The Master, and I was surprised at how much I loved it. Interesting watching that and Blood back to back. A huge difference is right from the first 15mins you are fascinated by, then behind Daniel Plainview. Freddie Quell is a really uncomfortable person to be around right from the first scene.

I am glad someone likes it

 One of our biggest differences of opinion, I'd guess. I find the movie endlessly fascinating, and of course brilliantly shot and acted. IMO PTA has 4 masterpieces and that's one.

I love our differences.

PTA Masterpieces: Boogie Nights, Phantom Thread, Magnolia, There Will Be Blood

Licorice Pizza is very good.
I need to see Hard Eight.

The other movies are borderline unwatchable.

I'd have The Master instead of Magnolia, then Magnolia a notch below. The only one I haven't really enjoyed on first watch was Licorice Pizza, and that was a reason for my rewatch. That and Vice I've only seen once, and I watched to watch Phantom Thread with my wife.

After watching a few PTAs after a bunch of Finchers and looking at Kubrick's name next on my list I realize there is a very specific odd dark sense of humor I connect with in these directors. They dabble in the dark and unconfortable side of humanity, but there are very few of their movies that doesn't get LOLs from me and have at least one character I find funny as hell.

For me Kubrick has no misses other than sort of Lolita.

His first couple before The Killing aren't that great. Don't know how I haven't gotten to Lyndon yet, besides usually pushing foreign movies or 3hr+ movies down the queue too much. That will be corrected in the next couple weeks though.

Of course it is, I think of this **** at night. I will try to simplify my paragraphs above:

1. I thought it would help if people had more choices in the movies somehow
2. I am a nerd and would (along with @Ilov80s if he also has interest in this part) give a way to steer the conversation and search for movies
3. I/we am fine doing whatever to choose the monthly director.

Here is an example that I gave 80s that might be clearer than my ramble above:

Month 1 - Scorsese. For FFA Movie Club watch 1-3 of:
  • One pre-1990 realease
  • One post-1990 release
  • One film off Marty's 10 Favorite Films list HERE

That is all each monthly post would look like, then people watch what they want from the loose "categories". Just a general discussion about one director a month with ideas that will focus the discussion a little. We will get creative with the categories to make it fun.

I like it.

Warning: I love Lars von Trier, mostly. He has a few clunkers that bring down the average so wouldn't make my list, though.

I think if you look at the historic epic that was wildly popular at the time, Spartacus stands out as a true goliath.

It's a genre that's aged poorly. Spartacus, in part because of its politics, has a more modern feel than the turgid melodrama of The Ten Commandments or The Robe. As I recall, the scenes with Jean Simmons were very soapy.

I think Spartacus is guilty of wallowing in spectacle like all of the 50s epics without a lot of the invention that marks Kubrick's best work. Kubrick reportedly didn't like the finished product although a lot of that probably has to do with what happened during its production.

I am very pro-Spartacus. I get why Kubrick didn't love it- he didn't have total control. That said, it's a masterpiece of a movie. Sometimes even the masters need some rules.

I rewatched Prey (Hulu) and liked it again. The lower-tech spear/arrow Predator is somehow cooler than laser Predator. It's been cool to see the current group of Native American actors in so many shows and movies. Hey, it's Sanguinet from Shoresy! Miss M8riarch from Res Dogs! Big from Res Dogs wasn't in this, but I feel like I see him in everything lately, most recently Resolution.

I'm halfway through X. That opening scene with the cops finding all the carnage is such a great setup. Things haven't gone crazy yet, so every moment I watch, there's so much tension about what happens next.

I just watched it for October horror movies. It rules. That lead actressis such a star, I can’t wait to see what she does next.

Saw the new Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes movie with the fam yesterday. We quite enjoyed it. If you liked the previous movies this is more of the same which was fine by us. I especially liked Peter Dinklage (who's awesome in most everything) and the main female lead, Rachel Zegler, was fabulous as well. I had to look her up since I didn't recognize her, but she also played Maria in Steven Spielberg's West Side Story remake awhile back. What a tremendous voice she has.

Game Night (Roku app - free), IMDB 6.9, 2018. Jason Bateman and Rachel McAdams have a murder mystery game night go awry. I thought this was great - just very likeable actors throughout in a movie that made me laugh out loud a bunch of times. Some movies like this go too far toward the crime plot, but this did an excellent job of remembering it was a comedy. Good stuff.

Has Jesse Plemons ever not been good in something?

In my opinion, yes. He is an actor I typically don't click with, beginning with Breaking Bad.

Two parts I laugh at each time I've seen it .. Jason gets shot and they try to fix the wound in the alley.. Both dry heaving was money!

And the scene in the bar where Rachel believes they are still in a game and is dancing around with what she thinks is a fake gun.
:lmao:

I was going to grab 1 more Criterion disc, but didn't know Oppenheimer was out, so I grabbed that 4k instead. Which means instead of Kubrick I will do some Nolan movies. I still haven't seen Tenet either, despite owning that disc too.

I loved Napoleon- it’s more Barry Lyndon than Gladiator as it’s very much a quirky comedy at times. Visually it’s the best I’ve seen all year. Loved the look and sound. The battle scenes live up to the hype- epic scale. It was for sure enhanced by the super emax 95 foot screen. My one criticism is I don’t think it really has anything to say.

Watched The Shining with my 12yo daughter last night. Her first Kubrick.

Despite being so iconic, I didn't remember how over the top Jack and Shelleys performances were... But it worked. And freaking Kubrick... The art direction, framing, pace, editing , camera work, score, lighting... Everything is pitch perfect.

Liked it. Not love.. but hopefully the whole package will burrow in and inform her future movie watching.

The absurdity of Dr. Strangelove is pretty relatable for kids.

I was younger than 12 when I first saw Paths of Glory on TV with my dad. I had no idea who Kubrick was but the execution scene stuck in my mind.
I would love to try Dr Strangelove with them. Top 3 movie for me... But I don't think my kids would get it... But I could give a try.

Wanting to run so I married an axe murderer by them... Mostly because they have enormous noggins.
