For what reason I don't know I decided to give Matrix resurrection a go.. I should have followed my initial thoughts No. it was free to watch on Netflix, so at least I didn't pay to watch it in the theater.

I didn't look, but I hope it bombed dollar wise so they don't make another.

Bombs and hits are just a matter of Hollywood accounting

I will give you a piece of advice, don’t watch it. I only ever have seen 1 and 2. I am a quick learner.

Action Jackson (1988)

Carl Weathers (RIP) stars as Jericho Jackson, a hard-hitting detective from Detroit. The plot is some nonsense about Craig T. Nelson as a wealthy industrialist killing off union leaders to consolidate his power. There's not much detective work involved, Jackson knows Coach is behind the killings all along but he still goes around gathering information from a fine cast of 80s character actors.

The movie was directed by former stuntman Craig R. Baxley who later brought us Stone Cold. The stunt game is strong although they never top the stunt that happens before the opening credits. There are plenty of explosions, brutal killings and the obligatory "hero hangs on to the roof of a car" scene. The movie tries for an 80s action-comedy vibe like Beverly Hills Cop complete with a theme song by the Pointer Sisters. Weathers is pretty good; he's a better actor than Seagal or Van Damme (or at least a more personable one) and can deliver the one-liners and be charming in his scenes with Vanity and Sharon Stone. His fighting style is rather limited though, consisting mostly of taking punishment and throwing haymakers.

The movie is a nice blend of 80s action and 70s blaxploitation. It was a pretty big hit at the time but never led to a sequel or Weathers becoming a top line action star.
Vanity was hot

Brats by Andrew McCarthy - Documentary of the Brat Pack(Emilio Estevez, Ally Sheedy, Rob Lowe, Molly Ringwald, Judd Nelson, etc.)on Hulu.

I think Andrew does a good job with this. It centers on a magazine article written by David Blum who coins the term 'Brat Pack', and how that article affected the actors careers and lives.

I didn’t care for his take on it treating the label as the focus, could have been much better if he spent more time on the rise and fall of the bp.
I watched this last night. It just felt like the whole point was to remind people McCarthy still exists, with the other pack members trying to help him out. His talk with Estevez was particularly uncomfortable to watch, like Emilio couldn't wait for it to be over. I did like the interview with Blum, he was totally unapologetic, and it turns out wrote a response to this documentary a couple of weeks ago in which he basically doubles down on what he wrote 40 years ago.

M is on TCM at 6pm Eastern
What a tremendous movie dealing with such a heinous proclivity and the direction and filming by Lang is superb. It sounds overboard but this is a must watch movie for anyone into film history. Creepy and sullen but with an offering of understanding there may be good in all but the most vile amongst us. "In the Hall of the Mountain King" indeed.

Agreed. It is an excellent movie with a great performance by Peter Lorre.

Director Fritz Lang said this is his favorite of all of his films. I haven't seen all his films but I know it's better movie than Metropolis.

This is what stood out to me the most. It was such a weird interaction.

What surprised me the most was that by and large all of the group had the same negative reaction to the term but each one let it affect them differently. Rob Lowe didn't GAF and laughed about it. He seemed totally comfortable where McCarthy seemed to let it tear him down. Demi Moore was pretty comfortable with it. Estevez was not at all and disliked it and it seemed to affect many of his choices at the time (like turning down a movie because one of the BP was also supposed to be in it).

What I really would have liked would have been to have all of them in a room together. That was the bow to tie it all together.

It's very 80s.

I am babysitting my MIL who has dementia and after watching The Holiday the last 3 nights, today is a big win. I’ve convinced her to watch The Wedding Planner.

I had to watch Bloodsport to remind myself what a "good" Van Damme movie is. Even that one is more a watch and laugh movie than is in an actual good action movie like Die Hard.

I also watched Rambo 3. :lmao: The opener with stick fighting Rambo at a Buddhist monastery is $$.

I will save some 80s goodness for later, and maybe just watch 1 more for the month. I did start The Golden Child on break, but not sure I can do that tonght. I think it will be good to move to the 90s next month.

Lol. I ended up watching the rest and mostly regretting it. Moments like this are what made me not shut it off. Murphy was so awesome in the 80s even if this movie was not.

It's a requirement in our house that it be asked this way whenever someone is actually asking for a knife to be passed.

Went and saw Argylle over the weekend and thought it sucked. Was disappointed because it's by the same people that did Kingsman, which I really liked - at least the original one. But Argylle was just bad despite having a pretty good cast. Definitely recommend The Beekeeper over Argylle if you're looking for an action movie to see in theaters.

Just watched this tonight. Holy crap is this movie terrible. Just completely stupid and incoherent. Terrible.

Argyles main problem was the lead... Who was flat out awful. Replace her and go all in for campiness, and it would elevate to *ok*

Shakedown (1988)

More 80s action from grindhouse auteur James Glickenhaus, best known for his bloody 1980 revenge fantasy The Exterminator. There's also a tenuous connection between Glickenhaus and Enzo Ferrari because the director went on to become a builder of sports cars that competed in the top class at Le Mans for several years.

Shakedown is a buddy action-comedy starring Peter Weller as a public defender and Sam Elliott as an unconventional NYPD detective. In the course of defending a cop killing crack dealer, Weller discovers an alliance between the dealer's boss and a group of corrupt cops. What follows involves inexplicable plot twists, outrageous stunt work, a more outrageous courtroom drama that defies all rules of jurisprudence and a lot of terrible dialog (Glickenhaus also wrote the script), In spite of all this, it's wildly entertaining with great period New York locations on 42nd St and Coney Island, big 80s shoulder pads, exploitative sex and drugs, cops with mullets and Antonio "Huggy Bear" Fargas as one of the main villains. Glickenhaus is a total hack but he has some style; he loves to shoot scenes from strange camera angles and keeps things happening fast enough to prevent boredom or plot questions. He also has enough of a sense of humor to include a scene where the Elliott character sleeping through a grindhouse screening of one of Glickenhaus' earlier movies The Soldier.

Ferrari should have been right up my alley but it was totally meh.
Yeah I didn’t like that at all. It was so boring.
Agreed. Really wanted to like it more.

"That last crash made me sit up straight and go WTF. Absolutely wiped people oot and caught be unawares. "

As a lifelong fan of the sport, I was familiar with the story going in but I think the filmmakers could have done a much better job providing context for the audience. The lack of exposition frustrated me. Characters came and went without explanation of who they were or what they were doing. The death of his son dominated the movie but viewers never knew him except for one very brief and unsatisfying flashback scene. Then there was a race and a crash and then it was over.

As it relates to your spoiler, same here. I’ll looked it up though and it seems like that’s pretty much exactly what happened.

JoJo Rabbit (Fubo): I have Fubo for the month for soccer reasons, so I'm watching some movies there too. They seem to be copies of the movies when they were shown on TV channels? So I'm not sure if there were any scenes cut or anything. Anyway, I really liked the movie. Taika Waititi was hilarious as figment Hitler, then the movie got pretty sweet, then it kicked us in the nuts, then it got a little funny and sweet again at the end. Definitely worth the time.

Awesome movie

Yorki: There are bigger things to worry about than Jews, Jojo. There's Russians somewhere out there. They're worse than anyone. I heard they eat babies and have sex with dogs. I mean like that's bad, right?

Jojo: Sex with dogs?

Yorki: Yeah. The Englishmen do it too. We have to stop them before they eat us and screw all our dogs.

Yeah, Yorki scenes were consistently hilarious.

Loved that movie. Not sure why this internet backlash developed around it.

Watched A Quiet Place 2 tonight (first one last night).

I like them both - scary enough without being a agony to sit through. Nice surround sound effects.
Took my oldest daughter to see Quiet Place Day One yesterday.

Not the movie I was expecting though still very good. Nothing will top seeing the original in the theater. Never heard a packed house be so quiet.

A little late to the party on Godzilla Minus One. I really enjoyed it, even on my little TV screen, and found it surprisingly moving for a monster movie. It would make a better double feature with Oppenheimer than Barbie did.
Good to hear, that’s on deck for my global movie fest watching. I’m not a big Godzilla guy but do want to check it out.

I'm not a Godzilla guy, but it was as good as Godzilla is likely to get.

What about if he learns to fly or adds a freeze ray?

I loved St. Elmo's Fire!

Soundtrack had some bangers too!
Just watched it last week for the first time. Had always been on my "Someday I'll get around to it" list. Yikes.

Nearly every character is wholly unlikeable. It was entertaining watching them try to top each other for Biggest Trainwreck, but it was also downright cringey at times.

I saw it when it came out and flat out hated it. Never bothered with a rewatch, even though Trips love had me thinking about it.

Alien: Covenant (Hulu). IMDB 6.4
This was the second time I've seen this. I watched all the prologue shorts prior to watching the movie. I also have watched Prometheus twice since I saw this last, and even watched the cut Prometheus scene of David's conversation with the Engineer. I now think this is a lot more coherent than I did at the first watch. The whole timeline clicks for me.
  • Engineer sacrifices himself to seed Earth for humans, or maybe all Earth animals, using an early form of black goo that breaks him up and rebuilds other stuff.
  • Engineers check in on humans with disappointment (leaving some legends and maybe language during visits), eventually decide to use black goo to wipe out humans and start over, but hijinks ensue and they don't make it off the Prometheus planet.
  • Humans follow the legends to the Prometheus planet to see what's up, hijinks ensue, Engineer is awakened, converses with David/Wayland about being creators but is still disappointed. Shaw and David use the Engineer's Last Searched in his GPS and go to his home planet.
  • David uses the black goo to wipe out the Engineers' home planet, Shaw doesn't help with his plans to play creator, he uses her body to hybridize the black goo, along with some goo-ized planet fauna, to tinker and comes up with some monsters and face huggers. David or Shaw send a repeating beacon.
  • Covenant ship is on the way to colonize a planet, they hear the beacon, find a habitable planet, and decide to check it out. Hijinks ensue, David reveals he's an evil creator planning to use the humans to continue creating. A face hugger impregnates a crew member. Android fight, survivors go back to Covenant, hijinks ensue, only 2 survive. Turns out the surviving android was David, not the Covenant android. David has brought some face hugger embryos with him. He's going to try to create a queen so his created species can take over everywhere.
  • At the end, with the embryos, colonists, and face huggers, David has what he needs to tinker and create a queen, getting us to Alien.
So... Engineers create humans create androids create aliens.

With that framework, I thought this movie worked. The various stages of monsters we encounter are properly horrifying, though at times they moved a bit too fast to be reasonable. David's workshop as presented is a bit much to take in, but the shorts linger enough that the horror there builds well. Fassbender as David/Walter was pretty incredible, I thought. There were some brutal moments, including a spiny back burster and some monster slasher bits. That final scene with Daniels' realization was really overpowering.

I think this is the third-best Alien movie. Of course there's a big drop from Alien/Aliens, but I think this is still quite good. I wonder what it would be like for someone who hasn't seen any of the other movies - does it rely on Prometheus too much? Was there too much cut and thrown into the prologues? Anyway, I rate this higher than most people do.
