Just got back from seeing Anora and that movie was absolutely made for me. Loved it. It's like a female led Uncut Gems. It is so loud and chaotic but truly funny the whole way through. My wife and the other couple all loved it. It's a blast.
Anora is now on Hulu. I'll check it out when I can muster a break from basketball

While I think there are 2 good reasons to like this movie I can't say that I'm a big fan of the story. I also think the pretty woman+uncut gems comparison is apt but the ending didn't have nearly the amount of shock value as uncut. I haven't seen all the nominees yet although I think it's better than Conclave, I'm a little puzzled how this is the best from 2024.

I would say because it’s one of the funniest movies in years

I think we have wildly different definitions of fun.

It seems like my tastes are generally more in keeping with 80s' than yours, but I agree with you here. I really did not enjoy this movie at all.

As to whether it's the best of 2024, while I don't think it was, I also think it was a down year. I can't think of a single 2024 movie that blew me away, though there are a couple I still want to see that could. I did like The Brutalist very much, but I preferred every Best Picture nominee from the prior year even to that (except for Maestro and Killers of the Flower Moon, which I did not see).

I like plenty of 80's stuff. I just think the big difference between you and I (and a ton of others) is that you watched some of this stuff "live" and while I did see a good portion of it in the late 90's/early 2000's when I was a teenager (and later 2000's when I was an "adult") it may not of had the same impact. My exposure was likely limited as well...I doubt I was renting many 80's movies from Blockbuster/Hollywood Video and the ones that came on tv were the popular ones that I think most of us enjoy anyways. Some of my tastes may have changed over time though.

I don't think Anora is a terrible movie or anything....I have some issues with it but there are worse. I'm pretty dense so after the movie I read about what the ending meant...it could be a decent ending.

I've apparently only watched 8 2024 movies, 9 if we count the movie we are talking about

the fall guy-what an actual fun movie is like
snack shack-pretty decent
My Spy The Eternal City-I have no idea why I clicked on this steaming pile of garbage
Deadpool and Wolverine-its ok, a bit overrated though.
the wild robot-ez win here. Not deserving of film of the year...prob.
Conclave-it was ok but the ending sorta ruins the whole movie in a way. It was so detached.
Red One-I actually didn't think it was that terrible but not worthy.
Hellboy: The crooked man: I know why I clicked on this pile of garbage. Apparently I like steaming piles of garbage

not your fault, It makes more sense that way so maybe I should have understood you were talking about him and not our lack of cohesiveness.

Nah, I re-read it and realized that I shorten his name to “80s” all the time, but it’s mostly in music threads, and since you’re not in those it made better sense the way you read it!

Just watched September 5 streaming on Paramount+. It’s about ABCs coverage of the Munich 1972 Olympics hostage situation. I thought it was really interesting and well done.

Watched Sing Sing on the plane ride and that was absolutely wonderful, l imagine it will settle in among my top few favorites of the year.

I think we have wildly different definitions of fun.
I loved the throwback screwball comedy aspect of it. I mean I will say I saw at a theater with a crowd after a martini but it was just about non--stop laughs all the way through and I did think the ending was powerful- the emotional release after what was such an insane night. Plus it’s does comment on the American dream (nightmare), power/money and how it’s used in the world to crush others. She was so close to a fairytale coming true and escaping her ****ty life and she fought so hard for it but it didn’t matter, she was just being used and nobody actually cared about her (likely how her whole life has gone) and she’s not escaping. But she maybe did find one person who had no reason to care but actually did and there is just enough hope in that final shot.

Rewatched Hi Fidelity. Held up really well, which given the top 5 countdown, 4th wall breaking narrative structure had me guessing it wouldn't.

Funny- I remember thinking Jack Black was astonishing in this- first time I'd really seen him. At this point, he was the only thing that didn't really hold up for me- more because I've seen too much of that exact schtick from him.

Watched Twisters yesterday. If you liked Twister, you'll like this. If you think any more about it than that, you won't. Don't bother comparing the two, don't break down the acting chops of Glen Powell & Daisy Edgar-Jones, just watch it and enjoy.

watched it over the weekend.

screwball is apt. pun and all.

i really enjoyed the armenians trying to contain her at the house- some good physical humor there. liked their road-trip a little less, even if we got a chance to see more of the armenians.

I didn't like that other than the very last scene, she didn't really show any change of character or growth. what we saw scene 1 was what we got for 2 hours. same for pretty much everybody. but they were all fun and well portrayed characters, even if there wasn't any arcs beyond the plot driven ones.

I think the only time I laughed during Anora is when they asked the cook if he had Instagram and he said No, I'm a grown man. I'm almost tempted to rewatch it since I feel like I missed all this humor. Maybe you could argue that the diner scene is funny.

Pretty much the whole movie is funny. I would say there’s maybe 10 mins total in the movie that aren’t comedic. Now ofc comedy is subjective and you may not find it humorous but it’s intended to be and definitely landed for me. The whole long scene where the trio come to take her away at the home and into the long search for Ivan is non-stop laughs. Physical comedy too. It’s very screwball, heck you could call the movie Anora vs the 3 Stooges.

Huh. As I said, I found the initial Armenian scene humorous, but I didn't laugh out loud once throughout (maybe a snicker or two)...and didn't really find much else funny. I'm pretty sure cocktails and a crowd would've helped, but not 100% sure.

This won best movie, right? Some solid performances but an odd choice, imo.

Yes it did win Best Picture. I agree a very odd choice- a small indie comedy about a sex worker. But the Oscars have been changing quite a bit recently. Parasite, Nomadland, Moonlight, CODA were all pretty interesting choices. It’s definitely not the same Academy that was obsessed with long period dramas like Out of Africa and The Last Emperor and The English Patient.

Mark me down in the Anora camp as probably the worst movie to win best picture. It was a'ight. Mikey Madison was very good in her role, even if the accent wasn't consistent. And I know I'm an old, but there was too much gratuitous sex shown, imho. They could have nailed down the relationship in one or two clips, seems like the director wanted to hammer us over the head with it though.
Comedic? Uhhhh, the one concussed guy I guess gave me a few snickers, but there was not one scene or quip where I actually laughed.
It was kind of a Pretty Woman, meets After Hours, meets Uncut Gems, big old mess. The last scene was pretty good, but overall this is not a movie I'll likely ever watch again.

I’ve also thought about maybe a ranking of best picture winners. I’ve seen them all at this point and imho there’s many many worse movies than Anora.

agreed.

coughcough...looking at you, English Patient.

Ironically enough my vote for worst winner actually tried to claim it was the greatest…hmmmm….

Watched Den of Thieves 2 - Pantera last night. Rarely are these type of sequels as good as the first and this one is no exception. Not a bad watch, enough action & intrigue to keep you interested but it just kinda seemed flat. I also have a hard time not focusing on Gerard Butler's sausage fingers.

It was pretty good. Agree about Butler.

The main thing I kept thinking to myself was how the bad girl continued to grow on me throughout the movie.
At first I was like "ok", but she was looking fantastic by the end.

The performance I was referencing, from a movie that hasn't made your 2023 or 2024 list, was Koji Yakusho in "Perfect Days." I expect to see this one on your 2025 list. :)
Ok finally found time for this on my flight back today. I’m glad I watched it on the plane actually because it forced me to totally lock into every moment of it. I loved it. The appreciation for all the little things in life, good and bad. Koji Yakusho was wonderful in it and everything about him is so admirable. Really the kind of person I would like to be in a way. I am not sure if a movie can lower your blood pressure but this movie sure feels like it can.

This is such a perfect description!

In anticipation of the next installment of Mission: Impossible we've just finished re-watching 3-7.

I've come to the conclusion that these are the most underrated action movies ever. It's absolutely astonishing how much is packed into each and every one of these films.

Look Away - aptly named, this was terrible

I blame my wife, I think she watches Tik Tok reels for movie recommendations, starting to think it’s put together by AI because half the time I can’t find the movie

This one had a girl yelling at a mirror or something, and it said it was named Malicious. Of course there are like 3 movies named that it said this one was from 2017 so we went with the 2018 one. About 10 minutes in she didn’t think it was the right movie. Apparently the comments said it was called Look Away and that description was a girl and her mirror image and hijinks ensue

Was also not the right movie and it was terrible. It has the Duke Dad from the new White Lotus and Mira Sorvino. Seriously nobody ever watch this ever it’s that bad

As long as Forrest Gump's Oscar isn't revoked, Anora will never be the worst. ;)
Gump is a masterpiece compared to Parasite, Shape of Water. English Patient and though I liked it Green Book.
I ca get the argument for Shape of Water, Green Book and English Patient. I know those are both movies that are generally considered undeserving winners but Parasite is pretty much cemented in as one of the best winners of the last 25 years and an all time classic. I have to agree. So I am curious, what about Parasite did you dislike so much?

I still haven’t seen Green Book, but Chicago was usually my answer until Shape of Water won. I really disliked that movie.

A Complete Unknown, streaming on Hulu.
Music was really good and brought me back. Acting was mostly good.
When I was a kid I didn't know any background stuff about these artists. Don't know how close to the truth it was but Dylan seemed like more of a jerk than I expected.
If you like the music from the period or are just interested in it, I'd recommend a watch.
