When did this thread start? Was Blockbuster still around?

Who 'rents' movies these days?
I don't rent but I often use my local library in the way I'd use blockbuster in the ole days. HAha. I do have a physical media collection thought. Right at 1500 total films. If you've ever caught me on a stream, my background is my film collection.
Nice, that is about 3x my collection but I do believe there may be a Criterion sale going on...

Watching an old foreign classic for the first time.
Tokyo Story (1953)
Tokyo Story (東京物語, Tōkyō Monogatari) is a 1953 Japanese drama film directed by Yasujirō Ozu and starring Chishū Ryū and Chieko Higashiyama. It tells the story of an aging couple who travel to Tokyo to visit their grown children. The film contrasts the behavior of their children, who are too busy to pay them much attention, with that of their widowed daughter-in-law, who treats them with kindness.
A movie that stays in the pocket of authentic human pathos. Setsuko Hara as Noriko was perfectly cast, displaying the genuine kindness of her soul.
Tokyo Story was ok but didn't hit me as an all time great movie. It's not even my favorite Ozu and I've only seen a couple.

. I am going through this now trying to watch a few from the early 00s I haven't seen for awhile and I can't seem to find much of my list without using the library.
I've been trying to find 2 movies to rewatch without success:

So I married an axe murderer.
When the Cats away (Chacun Cherche Son Chat)

Uh, oh. My shopping list is growing. I think I might grab the 4K Punch Drunk on the next run since that is the only PTA besides Hard Eight I don't have at home. Sorcerer and Barry Lyndon are two 4Ks that I wrote down that are coming out this summer as well.

Axe looks like you can rent on Amazon for $4-5, but the other I don't see streaming. Our library system doesn't have that 2nd one either.

The last couple days have been Booksmart, Lost In Translation, and watching Return of the Jedi with the youngest.

I think the start of the prequels is tonight or tomorrow. :scared:

Sinners

ooofffff
Might need to unpack that one since it's a pretty widely beloved movie. What didn't you like?
yea, I had read all the reviews and was really looking forward to it, had very high hopes. I really like Michael B. Jordan's work.

I thought the pace was very off. I had trouble keeping track of what was going on. Once it comes out on video I'll probably give it another try because, like you said, it's been very well received. I did however love the music. So so good.

It has really been around 20. This was a replacement thread for a thread started by Bloom (from before he even worked for FBGs, and he was just a poster) back in 2005.

Pretty sure that’s lost. Right?
It was too big for the board to handle after a board upgrade, but it is linked in the OP.

(ETA: Deleting the link here because it is not locked and caused some confusion last time it was bumped.)

Fountain of Youth - Was hoping for something fun like National Treasure or a modern Indiana Jones or something. It was just bad. Good actors but the story was dumb. Example - halfway through, there was a character that I was wondering why he was there. It's completely unnecessary. And then, all of a sudden, he's a huge MacGuffin in a dumb plot twist. I wanted to like it. But its just not good.

Also - as good as these actors are, they are kind of just mailing it in. And the characters are unlikable. And make dumb decisions.

Sounds to me like you found a modern National Treasure.

Ha. Fair point. I may be romanticizing National Treasure because I have not seen it in 20 years.

I loved that movie. The last time I saw it I was spending the night in the hospital post gall bladder removal. Eating cereal and watching that movie was entertaining for me that night.

Mission Impossible: Final Reckoning - Just saw this. So ... it's weird. The first hour is bad. The whole thing is just getting caught up from the last movie and, really, all of the MI movies. It's boring and unnecessary. It sure seems like they should have just done one big movie with the last two.

But then the 2nd and 3rd act each have an action sequence that is fantastic. So the last 60-90 minutes are pretty fun and at times terrific. But the first hour is tough.

Not watching all off all of these, but in the last few days I've popped on Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Eternal Sunshine, Inglorious Basterds, Rango, Inception, and Black Swan.

How does Rango hold up?
Very well, but it's always been one of my favorites. It's weird with many nods to old movies, and I think the animation is great. I love how all the background characters look great as well and have their own look and personalities. There have been so many great movies like that in the past 20 years when I've had kids and more of a reason to watch them.

And for my wife and I we enjoyed it from start to finish.. More than part one.

Really enjoyed them bringing all movies back to the first movie and the "hand holding" you through the connections. So many movies, so many years that we enjoyed the rewind.

Much like many of the most recent ones there are moments you just have to enjoy the action and not think about it in logical thinking.

Overall I'd give it 4 out of 5.

I started the original one, using an alias at the time (Sigmund) but an update to the server had Memphis as the OP but I didn't really care.

Ah, thanks. Thought that was a Bloom handle back in the day, but misremembered.

Just saw the new Mission Impossible. The last hour is good. The 120 mins or so before is awful. What a stinker. So much exposition and nothing made sense and no action at all for 2 hours. Woof.

Going to see M:I today at noon. I've found a reason to love every one before this. Turn my brain off fun for me.

My intake this weekend so far has been Born On the Fourth of July, Shrek (kids pleaded), and Enter the Dragon (mirror scene still as iconic as they come)

I honestly don't think I've been this disappointed in a movie that I was excitedly anticipating since The Phantom Menace.

And Dutch Angle camera shots can't create tension where there is none.

I liked it a lot. I remember taking our 3 year old to see if at the theater it was a bit intense for him

So boring. Easily the worst in the franchise for me. I know most people say MI2 is the worst but I kind of like the unique but cheesy John Woo style of it.

Speaking of movies, we are doing 1980's Movie Trivia tonight on Trivia Night Live if anyone wanted to play along via the Kahoot website (we give you all the instructions on the show. it is super simple!) or just watch along. Show starts at 9 PM/ET!

So I married an axe murderer.

Thank you! I had this in the back of my mind as an underrated, hilarious personal favorite.

The rewatch.. not so much. I still found a lot of funny bits still there (that I had always remembered) involving Meyers playing his dad, HEAD, and the cameos (Hartman, Arkin, Grodin, Wright). An old good friend is in it for a couple of spots- which was fun to see again. but the rest... yeesh. Meyers' schtick is cringey in this (I remembered enjoying it originally) and the movie itself is basically a vehicle for it.

I remember on the first watch that I was confounded by how much beat poetry we were subjected to.

I'm halfway through Mickey 17 (Max) - I started it later than I thought last night. It's good so far.

Black Friday deal on Max runs out this weekend, so I need to finish it off today.
I liked it. Pretty bizarre movie, but worth a watch. There's a bit of "What if Snowpiercer were a comedy" in there.

I actually enjoyed that part... WHOA-man. also was where my friend shows up. but was trying to figure out this time- is that seriously what he does for work?

It definitely stuck in the brain. All I remember from the movie is HEED, PANTS, NAOW!, Like Sputnik - spherical with little pointy parts, that Steven Wright was in it, and those awful beat poetry songs.

And this..

Yesterday was Blackhawk Down and MI: Fallout. Or at least some of each, as neither could keep my attention for whatever reason last night.

I gave Licorice Pizza an attempt last night. I made it halfway through, realized there was another hour to go and tapped out. It does not need to be this long of a movie. It's not overly enjoyable.

And it's creepy as hell. It's all over the map too. You're an hour or more in before Sean Penn comes in and ups the creep factor even more.

Did anybody love this enough to recommend finishing this one or is this as bad as I think it is?

I am as big of a PTA fanboy as there is on this board, and that is the one that I had the most trouble watching. I am in the middle of a slow rewatch of his movies before his new one this year, and that is also the one I am dreading the most to get to. I was wondering if now having more biographical info on PTA will help at all, but all that to say I am right there with you. Easily my least favorite of his movies.

I liked but didn’t love. If you weren’t in after an hour you probably won’t be. I assume you mean it’s creepy because she’s an adult and her a teen? I don’t think they ever have a romantic relationship though.

No, they weren't screwing but it's awfully cringey to see her reveal traits like jealously over at 15 year old boy kissing another girl or relenting to show the boy her boobs. But that's PTA, I get it.

I might try to power through it tonight.

Oh yeah it’s cringey for sure I just remember being kind of relieved it wasn’t as bad as it might have been. She’s so emotionally stunted that she doesn’t even seem much older. But also I’m guessing that’s just how the 70s were. When I started teaching 18 years ago, the older timers had stories for me just couldn’t believe. Kids and teachers openly dating. Like nobody even thought twice about a HS senior dating a teacher who was like 25. Truly incomprehensible today for a relationship like that to just be out in the open.

The soundtrack was excellent for (at the time) relatively unknown alternative music.

2 Princes lol.

But yeah... Some good stuff. A whole lot of "There She Goes" as a recurring theme.
