Red Sox consider Japan trip boycott

By Rob Bradford

Boston Herald

Wednesday, March 19, 2008

According to multiple clubhouse sources, the Red Sox [team stats] will be holding a players-only meeting later this morning concerning the issue regarding the coaches potentially not being paid the $40,000 allocated the players.

The sources indicated that the players will be issuing a mandate to Major League Baseball that if the coaches aren’t paid, then the team will not be getting on the plane later today for Japan.

According to one player, the agreement originally approved by the players included paying the $40,000 to the coaches.

So they don't want to do their jobs because why?

I was under the impression travel was part of the job?

Pretty greedy IMO.

What are the rules in forfeiting if neither team shows up? I can't find anything definitive on it in the rules except that the home team can postpone a game with previous notice. Link

The whole argument is that the coaches aren't getting the $40,000 that the players are getting to go on the trip. $10,000 a day in Japan is a nice stipend for a guy that makes $15 mill a year...............ridiculous.

Greedy? The players are going to get 40k for the trip. They are boycotting because the coaches and staff aren't getting the same benefit. Seems to be the opposite of greedy.

It's neither of them.If you read the ESPN article it says that the players barely voted to go to Japan in the first place (ie close to half the team has no interest in the trip).Probably the rest have changed their mind and they are now using the stipend/ solidarity excuse to get out of a trip they already agreed to.I think the term is renege

And from what I'm hearing the only reason they agreed to the trip in the first place was that they didn't want to deny their coaching staff and clubhouse personnel an opportunity to earn a nice windfall of extra money. MLB had the nerve to try and change the agreement at the 11th hour and the players were rightfully upset. Which is why the A's would have boycotted it and why the Blue Jays supported the Red Sox players (temporarily) boycotting today's spring training game.

So they should be paid extra to go on a working vacation?

I don't get it. A free trip to Japan and you're doing what you would normally be doing anyway. Just someplace else.

And they need to be paid more?

Why?

Once again, it is not about the players. MLB had originally agreed to pay the players and coaches money for the inconvenience of traveling over there. MLB tried to take away the money they promised.40 grand is quite a bit of money for a lot of these coaches and players on league minimum contracts.

It is. Now please explain why they deserve it. For doing their job, someplace else. And I don't think going to Japan (for free, all expenses paid) is that much of an inconvenience.

:shrug:MLB is making tons of cash off of this. They are giving the participating teams some of it.It is a fairly big inconvenience. Not a good way to start the year, flying back and forth across the globe. Ask the Yankees how they feel about last year's trip.

Why do they deserve it? Because they bargained for it. MLB cannot simply schedule games around the globe. They have to get the consent of the Players Association. The Players gave that consent on certain conditions. One of which was that the players and coaches would be paid extra. IF MLB wants the games in Japan, they have to live up to their end of the bargain.

Apparently they didn't actually bargain for it when they were making the deal. Or there wouldn't have been a problem. The players did make sure they got their money though. And 40K to go to Japan to do what you do anyway seems excessive.

OK. We get it. These players get millions of dollars a year to play baseball. Their whole life is excessive. Why are you harping on this?
