Restaurants have gotten so expensive……also recycling and phone apps (1 Viewer)

talked to a friend back home (canada) about how excited I was to come home to watch some SNF and head out for wings and some beer... we got to talking about how he doesnt do it much, if at all any more, as 12 wings alone are pushing 16$.. the scooner of beer (albeit large) now around 10... prices were ALWAYS higher than in the USA, but WT actual F?

$26 for 12 wings and a beer... + tax + tip, we're sitting at 35$ miniumum.

wife and I go for a 3 course michelin level lunch / dinner near by... 3 courses w a bunch of amuse-bouches inbetween for 22/28 euro pp for the regular 3 course meal... and up from there to about 50pp TAX AND TIP INC.

we're truly spoiled here... i cant wait to go home for some classic ramen, pho, wings etc...but im gonna vomit at the cost
Maybe it depends on the province but isn't tax rather substantial in Canada?
I think all of Canada just has a 5% tax on restaurant bills
Looked it up and looked confusing. My conclusion it is 5% in the western provinces and 13-15% in the eastern provinces.
Annoying as a visitor paying those crazy taxes but I suppose if I lived there and got free healthcare I would be more amenable.

the health care is immense... but the sweetest effect of taxation .. no tolls at all on our roads/highways.

“Our”? You’re already French?

Meant in Canada. These french bums have some paid tolls on their highways

There are toll roads in BC.....unless they got rid of them.

The income tax rate in Canada is substantially higher than the US, too. Top income tax rate in Ontario, including provincial tax, is something like 53%. You could argue that you get better bang for your buck with the social services (including healthcare), but there is certainly a cost.

there's zero doubt that the cost of living in the US is less. you take more money home. you pay less at the pump. at the stores etc.

now, again... growing up and having it be "all i know" i wouldnt trade our quality of life in Canada for fewer taxes/more money in my pocket. just the mental "freedom" of not worrying about health/medical bills etc... but if you grew up w more money in your pocket, it's a tough ask to say "we're gonna claw another 10-15-20% off your pay... I get it

anyways, both countries have their pros and cons. it is what it is.

One weird angle of the no tipping thing was we had a fantastic server at Union Square. Like top 10 ever. And it felt weird to leave them no tip. They were gracious about it and seemed to be sincere in saying it was included. But still did not feel right. Which was a little illuminating for me in I realized I liked to recognize the server that way. In restaurants where I'm a regular, I like the special service and free stuff I get. So there's a self serving part in it too. As I said, it's complicated.
Here's the thing (for me at least). If I were at a "no tipping restaurant", I would happily slip an excellent server a tip. I think it's appropriate to tip for excellent, above and beyond service. I don't like the expectation that I tip no matter what.

Right. The notion that that tipping leads to better service is a pipe dream. A crappy server gets a crappy tip and they mumble under their breath "freaking cheapskate" rather than thinking "maybe I should have done a better job".

I don't think I've ever tipped much less than 20% and that includes some nights of pretty lousy service, especially recently. But society has banged into my head that leaving a poor tip means I'm the bad guy.

The tipping system exists because people have gotten used to it and for no other reason. I'm tired of the excuses that restaurants can't get by without underpaying their servers because every other country has figured out how to make that work. And further, FDR was clear about it when enacting minimum wage laws.

"It seems to me to be equally plain that no business which depends for existence on paying less than living wages to its workers has any right to continue in this country."

By the very definition of our wage laws, a business that cannot afford to pay the minimum wage while keeping prices competitive enough to attract customers is not a business that should exist.

I honestly don't know why restaurants and restaurants alone have been granted an exception to that foundation.
Mr. Pink?

A friend recently turned me onto a glitch into the pricey restaurant matrix - chinatown and asian eateries in general. I went to a quality Vietnamese place and had great Bahn Mi for $3.50-$4. Couldn't imagine getting fresh lemongrass chicken and beef sandwiches at dumpy chain for that price even in the 90s. New lunchtime hack.

So last night me and a lady friend went to see Clarence Clemmons son, Jarrod, play at a pool club/fancy restaurant's lounge. Two dirty martinis each and we split an appetizer that was basically six fancy chicken nuggets with caviar on top so they could jack up the price (we asked if we could have without the caviar, but waitress said it would still be the same price). It was delicious and the drinks were good but with a 20% tip already included the bill was $126.00. Two drinks each and six chicken nuggets - that's kind of silly.

as long as you got some seems like a good deal

Totally feel your pain on the restaurant prices—it's like sticker shock every time I check the bill. Used to have a regular spot with a friend, too, and the cost hike is real. Those small plate tapas joints are popping up everywhere, and I'm like, "Can I just get a normal-sized meal, please?".
Tapas has been a rip off since the beginning of time.
Well, not exactly. Tapas is typically gratis in Spain if you're having drinks.

What if you're not going around in circles?

Yeah that’s pretty steep

Wife and I had 3 cocktails each at our local distillery, plus I got a bottle of their Earl Grey infused gin and that only ran me $120 (including tip)

basically 5% everywhere in the country. An additional "state tax" in certain states (provinces) of around 7%.

Since we don't have 1 where I live I dropped into a Long John Silvers last night for "nostalgia" as it's been decades since I've been there. 1 fish and chicken combo with a small drink, $18+. That'll be my last visit to LJS.

I go out from time to time with suppliers who typically take me to some nice places. Last week we were in Chicago for a trade show and went to Chicago Chop House for dinner. He was already one in at the bar when I got there, he ordered another, I had a double. Bar bill came to $105 before we sat down for 3 drinks. One app, two very nice steaks, 3 sides, 2 more drinks each (no wine just bourbon) and the dinner bill was $571 before tip. I though that was a bit stupid.

my amex card has a new promotion where i can save $20 when i use the card at a resy.com listed restaurant. took a look at some italian places near me and one is charging $42 for a scallop risotto dish. when rice is $42 it’s time to tap out.

Don't get me wrong i think $42 is a lot too, but let's be fair you're not ordering 'rice'.

looking at "good" pricing for U8 Japanese dry packed scallops... $26/lb.. divide by 8= $3.25 per. did they give you 3 or 5 (typically odd number)?
if 5, most of the FC would be $16.25 for the plate. so the 300% mark up is not uncommon. i think it is a little high, but not crazy/insane. Personally, i would cap a scallop/risotto dish around $35

Long John Silvers is one of the few national fast food chains I've never stepped foot in. Fast food fish never struck me as something I must have. Have yet to order a Filet-o-Fish either

Went out last night to a local favorite.

1 cocktail each
Calamari app (sesame/miso sauce)
Wedge

Substantial portions

$43 before tip

Gotta love happy hours
oh **** I didn't realize you were in the north bay, Seared is the bomb! I stay down in my novato hood for happy hour but Seared is a quarterly stop.

Arthur Treacher's was the creme de la creme of the fried fish chains - but there are only 2-3 left in the country ...1 of them is only a mile or so from where I used to live in Cuyahoga Falls, OH. I still dream of that fish and those greasy crispies ...could take or leave the fries.

that said, at a good LJS (some will be sloppy and/or use old grease, poorly run, etc.) they can be prettay, prettay good for fried fish. Decent hush puppies too. We have a couple where I live now and I make it a point to hit one of up a few times a year when I need that fix. Dunking everything with malt vinegar and tartar sauce ...making me hungry now.

LJS fish is pretty darn good imo. I haven’t had it in a few years. I always eat too much (fries, hush puppies, chicken, fish) and feel like crap after from all of the grease

Crunch pups and molten lemon pies ftw

If it is real risotto, also a pain in the ### to make, and that adds to the price. Some other dish, they scoop out from the warmer, that costs a lot less.

Never heard of Treachers (haven't see any in Texas or NYC) but I guess I'm not a huge fish fan to begin with. Pretty much anything tastes good with deep fried batter and I prefer my meat/seafood grilled or stir fried.

There was a place in NYC called A Salt And Battery which was solid. Not a chain but one of the best restaurant names I've seen since it's dedicated to Fish and Chips.

Fish and chips is one of my automatic go-tos for bar food, and I wish it were a more widely-available fast food option.

I used to go as a kid. That one closed for awhile and reopened recently but I can never convince my family to get it
The one time I got them to but in it was shut down for a water main break or something

I know once I get it it’s going to be instant regret

Treacher's seems to my feeble memory as more popular in my area back in the day, too.

pic of the fish - really crunchy coating and right out of the fryer - great tender fish that was close to the temperature of molten lava ...I liked the fries well done so the malt vinegar wouldn't make them too soggy.

5 Guys Cheeseburger: $11.99

:lmao:

Oof. Around here (New Orleans metro), they're $9.65.

I want to say that right before the pandemic, the Five Guys cheeseburgers were just south of $7.00. And mentally, I still think of a regular Five Guys hamburger (not their 'little burger') as "$5 and change" ... but it's been a good while since that was true.

i didn’t go. part of the problem i have is being in italy so often and knowing that i spend in the teens for risotto makes it that much harder. obviously good risotto is labour intensive and scallops are pricey, but i can replicate this dish for less than a quarter of the cost. i wish they offered a base risotto and i could add in if i want.

Went out the other night
2 cocktails each, shrimp appetizer and a salad, an overcooked steak and fishy salmon, 2 sides and desert was like $225 plus tip
The place describes themselves as "upscale fusion" and the prices are listed on their menu. Didn't you expect to drop 2+ bills before heading there?

For that price I expect them to be able to cook a steak properly

For me it's malt vinegar and hot sauce.

And speaking of the crispies, way back when I was a teenager one of my "cousins" picked me up to bring me back home from a long stay away, 7 hour drive. We stopped at ljs and I got the usual but I also got a basket of crispies. We got it to go and hop in his brand new car. Within 10 minutes I'd dumped the entire basket in his car. Was a pretty uncomfortable ride the rest of the way. :oldunsure:

need to add - the Filet-O-Fish is nothing like the fried, battered fish places - chain or otherwise

if you have ever had a school cafeteria fish sandwich ...that's it. Can't believe they charge like $4.50 for it - absolutely the worst thing and worst value McDonalds offer

Cool story about the Treachers. My brother was based in England when he was in the services, came home and said Arthur Treachers was as close to the fish & chips over there he could get here so he used to take me there from time to time. We lived in OH and there more than a few around in the 70's. For some reason they just disappeared in a fairly short period of time and life moved on. Fast forward to my first job outta college in 1989, working for a company as a project accountant. We're in training with about 20 other guys and I strike up a conversation with a guy that I happen to work with to this day. We get to know each other, become friends and one night out drinking we start talking about our lives. He laughs and say he was part of the poor half of the family. Puzzled I ask what?

So his dad was on the ground floor of Treachers when they franchised. He owned a bunch of them with a partner, had 3 kids with wife #1 and they were living the life. Mansion, cars, trips, whatever. Things take a turn, partner takes dad for everything and leaves him flat broke. Mom says see ya but leaves the kids. Dad holds onto one location and eeks out a living before changing careers and getting back on track but never to the level he used to be. Gets re-married, has 3 more kids (of which my buddy was one) and they live their life. Buddy was cool with everything but he said siblings from first marriage never did anything but complain about how it used to be when dad had money. It was funnier when I was drunk.

Since we don't have 1 where I live I dropped into a Long John Silvers last night for "nostalgia" as it's been decades since I've been there. 1 fish and chicken combo with a small drink, $18+. That'll be my last visit to LJS.

Long John Silvers is one of the few national fast food chains I've never stepped foot in. Fast food fish never struck me as something I must have. Have yet to order a Filet-o-Fish either

need to add - the Filet-O-Fish is nothing like the fried, battered fish places - chain or otherwise

if you have ever had a school cafeteria fish sandwich ...that's it. Can't believe they charge like $4.50 for it - absolutely the worst thing and worst value McDonalds offer

You shut your whore mouth

Fish and chips is one of my automatic go-tos for bar food, and I wish it were a more widely-available fast food option.
We have a legit fish and chips place and last time I went it was both way better and less expensive than ljs, hence my "last time there" comment. No alcohol there though.
