Restaurants have gotten so expensive……also recycling and phone apps (5 Viewers)

It was Taco Tuesday at Tijuana Flats. Went with a coworker today. 2 tacos, chips, and a drink was $7 plus tax.

For folks in the restaurant business, what's your opinion on stuff like this? I'm sure the restaurant loses money on things like this. What's the thinking? They'll get enough goodwill that customers will come back on other days and they can recoup the losses? Does that actually happen?
I think it depends on the customer. Some will be there just for the deal. Others will take the deal but also buy drinks, apps, etc. Guessing it's a loss leader kind of thing.

FWIW... when I was a "young professional" while traveling for work, my work buddy and I would go to Chili's for "happy hour" and get a few 32oz beers and free chips/salsa and wings. We'd get out of there full and drunk for $6 + tip. Then, we'd expense our earlier trip to the local record/CD store where we'd buy a bunch of music. Did this easily 2-3 times per week. Ahh the good old days... Luckily the big corp (who shall remain nameless) I worked for never questioned our expenses and I ended up with a huge music collection.
God....Chillis. In the 80’s and 90’s that place was money. It is utter crap now. The quality is so bad.....the service incredibly bad too (South Florida). Just a wasteland chain like Applebees. Crap over salted glorified fast food.

It’s too bad because Chillis has a great value menu.......but it’s so bad now.....we have not gone in years and years since it’s downfall.
It was crap back then too. Your taste and the size of your bank account has just changed.

Speaking as somebody that grew up in Dallas and ate at the original Chili's on Greenville before Larry Lavine sold it in 1983, I could not disagree any more strenuously to this sentiment. Chili's rocked, man. Always packed, always hopping, getting a family dinner at Chili's was a galdarn treat!

It was a slow, gradual crawl to crapstown and you're correct, by the time they were in every airport, it was nothing but corporate "meh". But those of us who grew up in Dallas know better.

Another great dinner at Vail last night: one drink, two apps, entrees, and desserts. Same price, $205.

One minor difference was $10 bottled still water. Ridiculous.

Does anybody in the country object to drinking tap water?

I’m not saying Chili’s was gourmet but we enjoyed going there a bunch as my sons were big fajita/rib fans. They were solid all through the pandemic. We’d order trays for the 5 of us and it was relatively inexpensive restaurant wise. It was good food and everyone liked it. Since 2 of my sons are now working/in college, we really hadn’t been to Chili’s in a while, maybe 2022. My wife and I decided to go there a few weeks ago and it was awful. The chicken quality was terrible and I’d be surprised if we ever go there again.

Just to have some fun, decided to hit a few fast food joints so I was sure I could feel confident in having some opinions on this crap

-BK, had a bacon double cheeseburger, used to love those as a kid, half the cheese was hanging off the bread or raw and it was small and it was not very good, also had a classic chicken sandwich w/no lettuce, you know the one that is long vs round, when I was kid I loved them. The worst part was the burping within about 20-30 minutes that lasted a good long time
Pukey mostly and I was out about $10, skipped the fries and the soda, this was mostly about the sandwiches, didn't finish either of them

-Culver's-Had a double butter burger w/both cooked and raw onions, pickles and mustard, it skull ****s BK/McD/Wendy's, seriously. The Wisconsin cheese curds, you get too many and once they aren't piping hot they get a loss desirable. Finished it with a. blueberry cobbler concrete mixer, too full to eat a lot of it, tossed it in the freezer at home and pulled it out later that night for a 2nd run. Overall I would say I could see myself pop in there when I want something like a fast food burger. Close to $20 for everything, I can get a brisket/prime mix burger for about $17 with double dropped/fried steak fries at my fav local spot when I want a burger, don't see the need to really change that.

-Arby's-They don't have them close to where I live, was passing one in Stuart and stopped. The Beef n Cheddar was disgusting I found and I thought it was like their #1 sandwich on line, just disgusting, the cheddar all drops to the bottom of the sandwich when you hold it, tasteless rubber roast beef is how I would describe it. Curly fries aren't very good, mine were mostly burnt crispy crap. Buffalo chicken, more rubbery meat. The best thing was the Vanilla shake and I found some combo here that ended up being a whopping but even $20.00, pitched 2/3 of the food without blinking.

I haven't had much fast food in the last many years, not sure why there are long drive thru lines going around the corner for some of these spots, Taco Bell always has a thick long line wrapped around them and I don't need to sample any of that, never agrees with me.

What say any of you about the fast food world these days?

I blame it on Kelce assulting Reid.

Violence never triggers other violence, right?

What did any of this have to do with my fast food reviews?
And what happened to my Kelce thread?

Yeah

It was good not great. Good atmosphere and service, food was fine, I’d probably go back but wife wasn’t a huge fan of the menu choices
Wife and I have considered it a few times but I usually have been a little disappointed with French food. We are doing Ladder 4 in 2 weeks. I am excited about that, it's supposed to be excellent. Tried that yet?

No adding it to the list but quick glance at the menu I don’t see a ton of stuff she’d like
I’ll pretty much eat / try anything, she’s much less adventurous

Here’s the current list of places I’m hoping to try this year

Bar Pigale - brunch
Couer
The Highlands
Oak and Reel
Mabel Gray
Phonecia
Leila
She Wolf
Ladder 4
Ladder 4 menu changes almost weekly- maybe daily (I think) so you just never know what exactly you are going to get. I thought Leila was overhyped but maybe it was just me, the other 3 loved it and keep bringing it up for a return visit. She Wolf was very good but my expectations were maybe too high. I want to go back though. Mabel Gray was awesome but that's been like a really long time. I do remember it was basically just whatever the chef wanted to serve that day with limited choice so that could be tough for your wife. It's tough keeping up with all these places. Albena is closing and I never even got around to it. The chef there had an incredible tasting restaurant in Ferndale I think. The kind of place where everything was made with tweezers in a kitchen the size of my bedroom closet. The name escapes me at the moment but I am bummed I missesd out on Albena. Have you tried Dixboro Project? It's quite good if you are ever out near Plymouth/Ann Arbor. The mushroom pizza is to die for.

Surprised Albena is closing already, I suggested trying it over Christmas but we never got around to it

No on dixboro, we don’t get out that way a ton but it’s not really that much farther than downtown for us. Will look into it

Detroit dining scene has really exploded over the last 5-10 years though, way more places than ill ever get to try
Huge news on IG, the head chef/owner of Albena is taking over as the head of Dixboro Project. That’s awesome. Garret is one of the best chefs in the State.

Adding to the list.

Up next will be Oak and Reel in March, gonna have to try and convince the wife to do the tasting menu. We have done that a few times with mixed results. Good news is that if she doesn’t like a course I get to eat it all.
We did one in Canada once where each one of us got a completely different course so that was nice, got to try a lot of stuff

-The pizza joint where I get delivery from for the last 3-4 years just implemented a new delivery charge
Over 2 miles $5 and I guess I am just over the 5-mile mark and they want $10 to add on top a $20 pizza, I always tip $10 and the delivery charge is not a tip..what would you do?.

But here's what really bugs me, not only does this owner stick it to me there but then he just bought the restaurant next door to the Craft Beer store I have mentioned a couple times

Anyways this ******* has banned his customers from grabbing a beer in our store and taking it in there to have with their breakfast, it's only open until about 2 in the afternoon, it's not a dinner spot but anyways this ******* has banged me now twice. I ain't paying $10 for delivery, just gonna do without pizza for now, probably shouldn't be eating it anyways

I want to open a pizza shop now and have real delivery drivers, not door dash and just focus on the homes in around where I am situated.
Just to stick it to him

K, thanks Larry David.

Probably doesn't have a BYO license - this varies by county

The last owner didn't seem to have an issue at all, in fact figured he was benefitting with people selecting a spot where the could also have a beer with their eggs.
We don't have BYO things around South FL, to my knowledge
I see spots that have corkage fees for wine but that's about it.

As far as fast food, I am a regular connoisseur of breakfast burritos from the popular places.

Just had a Sonic burrito this morning, I have learned to order through the App and pick up because Sonic is the slowest place in the world. Two Supersonic Burritos, sausage, less jalapeno peppers, add the spicy cheese sauce (which I must say I am a little irked that they now charge .60 to add), get four picante packs on the side and it is heaven. Solid B

Burger King has the Sausage Burrito Jr. They rival Sonic for being the slowest in town. One day I was standing alone in the lobby and it still took 20 minutes, but I hung around because apparently they parked every car that came through the drive thru and the level of hostility I witnessed that day was off the chain. People would come storming in yelling at the staff that they had been parked for 20 minutes and they had to get to work. I got to know the person working the register really well. He explained how he just bought a nice mattress, but he left it in the bed of his truck and it rained overnight, so he was really worried about it. He was about the chillest dude I have ever met in my life. However, back to the burrito--Because it is near impossible to get quick service there, I usually order four burritos and eat them over the period of several days. Again extra picante packs are a must!! I wish I could figure out how they make their folded eggs, but man, do I love these. B+

McDonalds-their combo breakfast burrito meal is my go-to quick stop. The burritos are nothing special and barely have anything in them. A spoonful of eggs, sausage crumbles and some peppers, but again picante makes everything better. What makes this edible is you get a hash brown with the meal and I substitute out a large Diet Coke for the coffee. The mixture of all these flavors, is just off the chain. Throw in the fact you are in and out fast and this makes this a solid B+

Taco Bell's burrito is okay, but they grill it and most of the time, they burn it and it is extremely crunchy on the outside. Not my favorite. C-

Jack in the Box was my go to place for quite a bit. We always got BOGO coupons for the burritos and these things were huge. They were just chuck full of fillings. They didn't have the little packages of picante sauce, but they had plastic containers with this salsa that was amazing, Loved this, but slowly and surely, the portion sizes shrunk. The wait was beyond anything you can imagine and the final straw was one time I found a bunch of hair in my burrito :x. I have never gone back.F

Carls Jr--another one of my favorites. Their Loaded Breakfast Burrito can be hit or miss. I can always tell if I am going to have a good experience by the weight of the bag. If it is heavy, I know I am in for a treat, but if it is light,, I know I got the person who prepared the burrito with the absolute minimal amount of fillings. They use the same picante as Burger King, so a major plus. If I hate myself that day, I will order their sausage, egg and biscuit on the side. The level of food sweats you will endure to eat all that food is not good, but is something I will put myself through if I am looking to counter a hangover from the night before. A-

La Casita is another chain around here.Their smothered burritos are sooo good and their salsa is practically a food group in and of itself. They make their tortillas in house. The problem is the nearest one is 20 minutes away and I have to go way out of my way to get them, but if they built one by me, I would live there. The last two times I have gone, there were two, big groups of Hispanic construction workers ordering their food and just loading up on bottle after bottle of Coronas. I told myself, I hope their day is over because if they are heading to the job, someone is getting a really interesting result from their efforts that day. A+

I know there are a bunch of independent Mexican drive thru places around me that everyone touts as being the best, but they all tend to use Chorizo or spicy sausage and I am just not a fan.

I often wonder what an Arby's breakfast burrito would look like???

I like the idea of a delivery surcharge for pizza. I’d rather they do that than raise prices across the board. Make the people who order delivery pay the costs associated with that.

My son likes Domino’s (not much to be said for his taste, but it is what it is). I like how they give discount for pickup — $7.99 large 1 topping for carryout is a pretty good deal relative to paying the costs for delivery + tip. (Looking at the app now, a 1 topping large for delivery is around $20 before tip ($15 pizza plus $5 delivery surcharge)).

I haven’t had one in awhile but Taco Bell breakfast burritos are pretty good for fast food

If we are talking ff sausage egg and cheese sandwich Wendy’s all day for me. Swiss cheese sauce ftw

Speaking of chains, I usually don't order fast food breakfast, but when I do it's an Egg McMuffin and hash browns. Drive thru burgers are Wendy's. Chicken sandwich is Chick-fil-A. Subs are Jersey Mike's. Pizza is Jet's (Cajun crust square).

BK - the burping is what shut it down for me as well. Used to love their original chicken sandwich but it really didn't matter what I got from them, you burp for at least half a day after. haven't been there in years.

Culvers - only been once and didn't care for it. Not everything needs to be dipped in butter.

Arby's - my favorite out of your 3 but it's only for their original roast beef sandwich and curly fires. Anything else is pure ****.

Wendy's - my fast food go to but what used to cost me $8 (dbl, fires, Frosty) is now over $13 and the quality of our Wendy's here has gone way down so it's rare that I stop anymore.

Just to stick it to him
I like the idea of a delivery surcharge for pizza.

It’s one thing if you live in a city environment where picking something up could be a long walk or you have a disability/lack of car, but suburbs with a car? Laziness. Always amazes me that people get delivery that takes way longer, the food is not as hot and it costs a lot more.

I use the apps to get coupons/points and do a quick pickup just like you. Stuff is expensive enough, but paying $20 for one Domino’s pizza or $20 for a Chick-fil-a sandwich is just goofy.

Get it delivered to an address within the 5 mile radius and meet the driver there.

Agreed. Unless you're too drunk or injured or sick to drive and go get the food, this should just be called a "Laziness tax" and the slug ordering it has no right to complain.

I saw them try this on Seinfeld but it didn't quite work out.

Arby's - my favorite out of your 3 but it's only for their original roast beef sandwich and curly fires. Anything else is pure ****.

ouchie - sore spot for me ...

agree - with the exception that those curly fries are ***

Arby's murdered my beloved potato cakes - and only have them at a few locations AND they are limited to breakfast.

potato cakes are typically made to order - so you get them hot, crunchy and fresh - by far the best potato side dish ever in fast food history

of course - they are even better dunked in both Arby's and Horsey sauce for each bite.

Completely disagree with this. Their food used to be fantastic.
Chili's? We are talking about the chain Chili's right?

Yeah, see.....not all chain restaurants start off as chains. Many times - most times I'd reckon - they start off as a singular restaurant. Chili's was the epitome of this long before it became just another TGI McScratchy'sBees.
Oh i guess you were at the original and it was good then. Only since they franchised the became the suck

Culver's is one of the greatest places on earth.

Seems harsh. My wife and I raised our kids and are empty nesters that enjoy a cocktail or 2 after earning our pay for the day. Delivery is much cheaper than a dui

my amex card has a new promotion where i can save $20 when i use the card at a resy.com listed restaurant. took a look at some italian places near me and one is charging $42 for a scallop risotto dish. when rice is $42 it’s time to tap out.
I'm so shuked. Isn't this EVERY restaurant near you?

Not a Chili's historian, but I believe they were first sold in 1983 with some moderate expansion to follow, mostly regional. By the time they appeared in Minnesota or airports everywhere, the Chili's I grew up with was gone. Just a name and a logo.

10 year old me loved Chili's. Current me thinks it sucks.
My 10 year old son loves Chili's.
It's pretty much the same stuff

Yup. Friday's, Red Lobster, Max & Erma's, Chi-Chi's, Chili's, these all used to be TREATS to a young man in a lower middle-class family. This **** is garbage and always has been.

Experienced the same with potbelly. The original one was on Lincoln Ave in Chicago. They were a furniture store that started making sandwiches for their customers. Eventually they just started selling sandwiches. I remember going to the original store before they expanded back in the mid 90s.

I used to go to them straight out of college in the mid 90s when I didn’t know any different. Always like the chicken & mushrooms from TGIF. Sue me.

This was my experience with Chili's too. I certainly wouldn't go so far as describe their food as "fantastic" or anything like that, but when I was younger, it was a clearly-superior version of the Applebees/TGIFridays thing. This would have been in Indiana, and I'm sure it had already reached "chain" status by then, but it was a notch above other chains in the same way that Culvers is a notch above other fast food places.

Some things actually have changed since were younger, and we're not just misremembering because of the fog of nostalgia or something. I distinctly remember Applebees sucking back then just like it does today, for example.
