Restaurants have gotten so expensive……also recycling and phone apps (1 Viewer)

The last time I had BK was at the Vegas Airport (easily bottom five airports in the country). It was my only option. It was midnight. I was starving. I had some BBQ burger that was on display as their crowning achievement. I had intestinal problems for 4 days after eating that. Never again. That place is pure poison.
I don't disagree with you, but so is McDonalds. It's just an... interesting... line to draw between the two.

McDonald's regular cheeseburger tastes good to me. I'm sure it's some sort of dopamine trigger rooted in childhood that keeps my opinion of it positive, but I also haven't had one of those in a long long time. The Big Mac I scarfed down for Eat Off was fine. Nothing great, too soggy, but fine.

I do like their sausage egg and cheese biscuit, especially if I'm hungover, but I can count on one hand the number of times I've succumbed to their drive-thru for one (or two) in the last 5 years or so.

I'm not kidding when I say I'd rather eat my dog's food than another anything from BK.

Some local place for lunch

Greek fatoush with chicken ($7 upgrade for 1 small chicken breast)
Lavender lemonade

Shakshuka
Water

$55 including tip (I did leave a 24% tip because they had that table side reader)

I think the last time I ate BK it may have been there too. Just got the onion rings though.

Gessner - newer place, way better than the last time we went.

Going to La Tour tonight, Sweet Basil tomorrow
I haven’t been in the area since 11.

Was a lead at La tour. This and sweet basil are still my favorites
Us too. We always go to those two. Will probably add Swiss Chalet and Gessner to the regular rotation.
Two more Vail dinners. La Tour was $100 more than the last two places, total bill around $300 for a glass of wine, scallop app, lobster bisque, salad, a fish and veggie main, and two desserts. Good, but not worth the premium over the “cheaper” places, imo.

Sweet basil was thirty bucks cheaper than La Tour, and much tastier. By far the best place we ate, though certainly not a bargain. We had two drinks, mushroom salad, a vegetarian and two fish entrees, and two desserts.

I like how this thread vascillates between $300 dinners with rare mushrooms topped on arctic lobster tails and the outrage of paying $9 for a hamburger from the worst fast food place in the world. Good stuff.
Never had a $300 dinner and never will.

meh, every once in a while we'll take a trip and splurge - went to Chicago and did the tasting menu with the wine pairings at Oriole.

would highly recommend.

We also had two foot long veggie sandwiches in the Denver airport. Those cost $25.

Mine was lettuce, spinach, onions and avocado spread, on wheat bread, with sweet onion teriyaki sauce.

First time I’ve eaten at Subway in years (decades?), but actually not bad. Would’ve never gone on my own, but wife was hangry, and I was responsible for missing our flight.

Drove the wrong way on I-70 for ~45 minutes, almost to Glenwood Springs, before I realized Western CO looks quite a bit different than the snow-capped mountains of Summit CO :bag:

Same. I was tragically hung over. It was the only option.

It’s the drinks that usually get you. A $100 bottle of wine or fancy cocktails at $20 a piece. That can add up quick.

Culver’s for wife and 2 kids

Walleye dinner
Cod dinner
Bacon hamburger kids meal
Chicken fingers kids meal
Kids got free ice cream wife got one too I got a malt

$55

Food was good thought that was a pretty good value

Leos Coney Island last night. 2 grilled Chicken Kabob dinners, served with pita bread, greek salad and rice. 12.95 each. I had water wife had iced tea. Have enough leftover for lunch today. Was dam good too. They marinate chicken 24 in greek dressing.

With tip 35.00 Amazing how cheap the bill is when no alcohol is involved.

Absolutely. Though our $300+ meal included only a single glass of red wine.

Today, we had breakfast for four at Snooze in Denver. Six dishes + 2 coffees was ~$100. Really good food.

We have those near us. $50+ for breakfast for 2, no booze, is a bit much. It’s good though.

oddly, one of them is completely staffed with LGBTQT etc. many many posters, rainbows, signs, etc all throughout the place Declaring this and that related to their various causes. Not one employee is wearing any sort of distinguishing uniform. one can not tell wh9 works there or who is a customer. It was trippy to find such a bastion of equality in maga south OC. NTTAWWT.

All the servers in Denver looked hipster-y, with ironic t-shirts, facial hair, tats and/or piercings. My friend commented we weren’t stylish enough to be seated, though our waiter perked up once we mentioned HI (as many people do).

After bringing our food, he talked about some quasi-religious experience he had visiting Oahu, and asked for recs should he return. I told him to avoid Honolulu like the plague, and check out the neighbor islands instead. Looked like he’d fit in well on Kauai.

In Denver? No way!
Sarcasm appreciated. Having eaten around town at multiple other venues, I can assure this place was a standard deviation or two above the norm.
yeah just teasing but I know what you mean that some places just lean a little more that way. Detroit is the same.

Saugatuck MI is for sure, now Traverse City is getting that way. TC around the waters is a bunch of people who have $$$$ and a bunch of hipsters in the service industry.

Service industry attracts that type. And well Saugatuck has always been very open minded and free spirited.

Snooze is a great chain. Premium prices but their breakfast/brunch menu is consistently good

Jack & Giulios : San Diego Old Town.

If you are visiting our neck of the woods try this small quaint Italian restaurant nestled in the heart of Old Town. Prices are fair and quality will not disappoint. The menu is limited but everything on it is excellent. Been going for years. Under $200 for 2 with drinks and appetizers.

Under $200-? I guess that is the going rate. Prices don't seem awful, even in SD. I'd prolly do the appetizer split, pasta and drink each and try for $100- range. Pasta dishes under $20- is what I now call reasonable. When pasta is over $20/$30 with no protein I am hard passing.

I took a peak, it didn't look crazy to me price wise. Meats under $30-, simple pasta under $20-. Like i said.....i have a place near me that is charging >$30 for a large cheese pie, at least I can get dish at your place.

I truly recommend it. San Diego can be expensive just to live in much less eat. I think this place is a bargain/in line with the quality it provides.

This is where being too cheap to drink alcohol at restaurants pays off. I look at that menu and see it as $70-ish for two people before tip. Something like the garlic bread ($6), the lasagna ($20), the Chicken Piccata ($23), two non-alcoholic drinks (~$10?). Around $59, then whatever the tax is locally ... we're at around $65-67. Maybe $90-ish before tip with two desserts and coffee.

I'd rather go out twice or three times for $200 then once. I can forgo the alcohol every time to make that happen.

There are plenty of places in the New Orleans area priced like that, and out cost-of-living is probably 60% of what it is in San Diego. Looks like a good local deal.

I half joke. But yeah I totally agree with this. Excellent service is a huge differentiator. It's part of why Whataburger has gone so downhill in the past few years. Not only does the food seem cheaper and possibly smaller, but the service is WAY worse
Whataburger got bought by an out of state conglomerate around the time. I think it's around the time Whataburger condiments hit store shelves.
