RIP Kimbo Slice, just 42 (1 Viewer)

Dude obviously had a rough life but sure as hell did more with it than most with the life-hand he was dealt. Sucks so young.  Can't help but think the drugs/steroids he was admittedly on and confirmed post-fights was a factor.  All around tragic and admirable.

The video of him knocking the guys eye out of his socket in the backyard fight was insane. Rip to an all time mediocre fighter.

I like the video where they gave some idiot 50 bucks to take a punch from him. After the punch the guy just crouched over for 30 seconds and they kept asking him if he was going to sh!t. I think he did.

Guy was loved by Miami, there was quite a piece done by LeBaturd back in 2008

Link-ESPN

I have little to add or say, just thought those who enjoyed his 15 minutes of fame might like this.

I did make the "first Ali, now this?" remark elsewhere too, I admit, but snark aside, he seemed like an extremely down-to-earth, family-oriented dude in interviews. Really crappy news.

RIP

Fair to say, 1st internet sensation via sports with the backyard brawl?

I think it might be how at least a few folks found Youtube to begin with.

He crawled up out of the streets and again I understand why folks might not appreciate him. I just find the entire story interesting and ultimately kind of sad.

Kimbo's death was a bigger loss than Ali, IMO. Kimbo had more years ahead of him entertaining fans. Ali was basically dead already.

Disagree with this?
Yes, I do disagree.  The impact made by Ali, and what was still being made by him at the time of his death, was greater than that of Kimbo Slice.

Cmon man. A guy with 15 minutes of fame vs arguably the best fighter in history, and you take the street fighter? Good shtick.
Exactly....in history. Ali hasn't fought in what...thirty something years.

Like I said, Kimbo had more productive/entertaining years ahead of him....bigger loss.

My initial thought was steroids though I did not know he admitted to use.

42. So freaking young.

Man, I can't believe some of you are actually comparing Kimbo's impact on boxing to Ali's.  Sometimes I wonder why I even bother coming to this forum.

Who is doing that?

If you are referring to me, I'm simply talking about the loss/death of people in going forward kind of way (what we will miss out on in the future)....not a "what this person done in their lifetime" sort of way.

Were you guys expecting great things from Ali in the future?

I'm guessing Ali will continue to provide an example through his legacy for future generations. Kimbo Slice was going to be returning to fighting losers at abandoned swimming pools in Florida. So, Ali >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Slice.

Or, to put it in a way that you can understand, Jimi Hendrix has been dead for nearly 50 years...however he's still putting out music and his estate is still raking in cash. Your favorite garage band will quit and Rolling Stone will be none the wiser.

The fighting losers at abandoned swimming pools in Florida was the best part about Kimbo. He was like street fighter 2 come to life with all the backgrounds.

Both he & Shamrock got popped for steroids after they met.  I'm not suggesting a link between steroids & heart attacks, but who knows what else he was taking.  Steroids are illegal, so he definitely didn't have a licensed Dr. giving him medical advice. Then again, it could have been a good old fashioned cocaine od.

Yeah, I'm guessing he didn't lead the healthiest lifestyle.

His legacy?

Ali has more fights booked?

Or are you talking about him not fighting for this great country when asked to?

Or maybe having 9 kids by 5....yes....FIVE...women? (at least Kimbo was able to stay with one woman for his 6 kids).

How old are you Servo?

Maybe you are making the same mistake as many others do and blurring the line between a person's career accomplishments and what type of person they are away from work.  This is done a lot with all sorts of celebrities (athletes, actors, musicians, etc.).

I didn't know Ali personally.  I highly doubt you knew Ali personally.  Let's not turn him being the greatest boxer ever to the greatest person in the world for now and into infinity....okay?

For the record @eoMMan, I'm 52. So I watched Ali in his prime fighting, his interactions with Cosell, etc. And I was very young when he claimed conscientious objector status (and was stripped of the heavyweight title for it). He stood for what he believed in and didn't run to Canada like a lot of (white) fellow draftees. So, he's in a different class of non-combatant for the Vietnam War.

Let's also not be throwing stones around; Ali's multiple baby mommas is not something to be emulated. I'm sure if I had a PI investigate your life he'd find a couple of things that you wouldn't want made public. Nobody is elevating him to God status - as there's only one God - but we take the good others do and appreciate the positive difference they made to humanity. And when they're gone, we mourn that they can no longer exert an active influence on society. However, there are people who will continue to remind future generations of Ali's generosity and willingness to love his fellow man (and his athletic accomplishments). Other than his immediate family and friends, Slice is likely to fade into history largely as a footnote.  Sorry, but that's the way it usually works.
