He had such a great feel for all aspects of moviemaking that I don't believe he ever had a genuine flop or "phone it in" type of performance. All of his films had a purpose. A few years ago I saw "Legal Eagles" on late night HBO--not one of his classics--and even though comedy was not his strong suit, and the script wasn't all that strong, you could tell that he was putting in the effort, and that elevated the film

The one story that stands out is how he cast Mary Tyler Moore in "Ordinary People". He did not bring her in for an audition, nor any other actress, but instead offered her the part immediately. They lived in the same enclave in a secluded town north of Hollywood, and Redford would occasionally cross paths with her. He was always struck by how sad she seemed. Despite her fame as playing upbeat, chipper characters, there was a deep sorrow within her that Redford sensed, which was perfect for the role in "Ordinary People".

Hopefully he's pulling another prank with Paul right now. They were a great team, I wish they had made a couple more movies together.

Best part is he was a great guy. Wasn’t craven for publicity, devoted his life and money to environmentalism and giving an avenue for young artists to have their work seen. By all accounts he was a mensch. Truly lived a blessed life and responded to the world in kind.

I have never been a huge fan of "Twilight Zone", but have been seeing a lot of mentions of an episode he was in at an early stage in his career. They say it is one of the best in the entire series.

You guys have already mentioned so many good movies. I will add one that he wasn't the top star for but his general gravitas helped make it arguably the best stand alone MCU movie.

Yes, a great role that rewrote the typical grim reaper into something totally different. The Twilight Zone featured a lot of young actors that later became huge stars.

I was most impressed with him as a director with the movie The Conspirator. As I was watching I was impressed with the look and feel of the film. It looked like the 1860s. He put had the prop dept haul in tons of dirt to place over asphalt roads in DC and it looked fantastic. I didn't know Bob directed it till I looked it up.
Very good movie.
Best movie he was in... I absolutely love Butch, The Way We Were, Jeremiah Johnson, and always thought Tell Them Willie Boy Was Here was underrated but my fav is All The President's Men.

The middle stretch with Faye Dunaway is a little awkward today and is the weakest part of the movie but the beginning and end are really strong and the elevator apartment scene is incredible. The paranoid thrillers are maybe the best sub genre of the 70s.

In what I can only describe as down right shocking, I discovered The Great Waldo Pepper is streaming on Netflix until October. I haven't seen it but Redford in another George Roy Hill movie? Sign me up.
