Roethlesberger's knee (2 Viewers)

I just figured I would throw my 2 cents in here. I was watching the game, and it looked like a fairly serious injury. Some people here are saying it's a hyperextension, some are saying ligament damage, some are saying he's fine.Well I just wanted to say that I hyperextended my knee about 6 months ago. It wasn't serious, and I played the rest of the game (soccer). After the game, I thought I was fine. 3 months later, I found out I had a torn lateral meniscus. I had arthroscopic surgery and was out for a few weeks afterward.I don't know what is wrong with Big Ben. It could be a ligament tear, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's torn cartilage.

For what its worth, Eisen just said on Total Access that Big Ben was seen laughing in the locker room following the game.
They just showed some video of him sitting in his locker laughing with someone. Sure didn't look like someone who is expecting to miss any significant time.

Hey Boston Fred!

You're plastic! Angels fans are plastic! They know nothing about baseball. It was a Disney Corporation for cying out loud you tool! You pansy!

You've been an angels fan since when? October, 2005? Big Surprise.

Boston was swept, Right?

Go play with your Barbie!
I don't think you're supposed to have soda or sugary snacks this late at night. You should try to calm down and get some sleep.
Nice Freddy.I actually thought i would have a legit debate from you, but you've proven to be incapable of such intelect.

That's cool buddy, I understand, you're from Boston, go back to your cave, grow your hair to the dirt and drink your pi$$, you "earthy" thing you.

For what it's worth I'm here watching the local news, and Ben just went by the camera on crutches. He did not stop to talk to the reporter. Prior to them showing him leaving, they had video of him entering the locker room after the game. He was carted in, then helped into the locker room, with a person under each of his arms. Won't know anything else until tomorrow, at the earliest.
But he was laughing.

That injury is going to stiffen up over night and swell. No way he's playing next Sunday, let's not forget this is a Monday night game on the West coast for Pittsburgh.

On the flip side, I'd be very surprised if he was out for lets say months. He was walking off the field with help. It didn't look like a Rodney Harrison injury where he couldn't walk at all off the field.

Good luck Ben!
Guys walk off the field with ACL (or MCL) tears all the time. I wouldn't be so quick to assume he's alright just because he was walking. His walking is insignificant in the diagnosis.Smart money is on Ben missing the rest of the year.
McAllister did yesterday, with a limp of course.

The problem is the way you're going about things here Jesse aren't grounds for an intellectual debate. All you're doing is going against what this board stands for and probably aren't to far off from getting sent for a Time Out.

Wow, very very lucky considering how bad that looked and the way he went down. What a night for Pittsburgh.

reporting that it looks like a bone bruise with no ligiment damage..breath eaiser Ben owners..
If that's the case, very lucky on what looked to be a tough hit right on the knee.I still think it's a little more than that the way the leg went back but sometimes what looks to be bad doesn't turn out that way and some of the injuries that don't look to be significant end up being season enders.

Either way, I'd be surprised if we see him in the game next week with this being a West Coast Monday night game.

I need bagger, gebz306, falconeyed, cobalt_27, and bicycle_seat_sniffer to apologize to me. For the record I WAS RIGHT...again.
You sir, are a great doctor.I apologize for not seeing your medicinal omniscience.

My first child will be name Gridiron Menace.

That was me.  Thank you.  I would give Big Ben a 70% chance of playing this week.
Can we get this guy a free subscription in exchange for medical questions...tia.

Most solid. Again, it is virtually impossible to tear an ACL from a straight hyper extension without actually fully hyperextending the knee to the point of complete obliteration.

Even though it's Tuesday morning right now in Pittsburgh? I'd be surprised if he plays against a tough hitting JAX D. You want to talk about a bullseye.........I'd get him healthy.

It really depends on the degree of the hyperextension. To me it didn't look that bad. It obviously hurts like hell initially, but he'll be back to bending it and should practice on Friday and be a go for this week. But I can understand him missing 1 game.

I think the key to knee injuries seems to be that the bad ones tend to happen when the knee bends violently outward. As if a runningback makes a big cut and his shoes plant in the turf but his body weight cause the knee to keep going outward eventhough the leg is planted. I am sure violently having the knee bend inward can also cause serious damage but I would guess that the natural formation of the knee would help resist a hit directly from the front where the knee is pushed backwards. That sounds like a hyperextension that is alot of soarness but probably won't be further injured by playing on it. I am not a doctor but it's just a hunch. Any sideways force is likely worse on a knee than it being forced straight back or forward. I would think the ACL and/or MCL protect the knee more from going side to side than front to back but I could very easily be wrong.

From this morning's PG:

"The early prognosis on Roethlisberger is this: His knee was hypextended when he threw a 9-yard pass to Antwaan Randle El and Chargers defensive end Luis Castillo rolled into his left leg as it was planted on the turf.

Roethlisberger was scheduled to have a magnetic resonance imaging exam this morning, shortly after the team's chartered plane arrived in Pittsburgh. The Steelers did not make any official comment on Roethlisberger"

Sounds lilke we should know more later this morning.

Also found these famous last words......

""I'll be all right," said Roethlisberger, as he pulled on a pair of bluejeans over the knee, which was not wrapped. "You know me, I'm tough."

.... Sounds eerily familiar to the Duece McAllister statement before we heard he was out for the year.

Yeah, but I'm sure Deuce left off the "I'm tough" part. :D

Bill Cowher has his press conference today at noon so I am sure he will have some kind of report although it may be too early to tell. Their flight didn't get in to Pittsburgh until a few hours ago so I am not sure how much time they will have to make a thorough diagnosis.

 It's usually pansy-asses that need to announce how tough they are to the world. I could be mistaken, but I don't remember Leftwich oor Favre telling the media "I'm tough" - they already knew.

FWIW, I don't cheer for injuries, but I love seeing Charlie Batch back on the field. :towelwave:

You're right. Everything I've ever seen from Roethlisberger indicates that he is pansy.

Like Willis McGahee's injury? :X

I don't know about anybody else, but common sense tells me from everything I saw, there's absolutely no way Ben plays next week. You could tell by the replay his knee bent significantly backwards (severe hyperextension). I'm not saying he'll miss multiple weeks, buit I believe it's overly optimistic to expect him back in week 6. I could be wrong. The MRI will tell the tale. Best of luck to Big Ben.

Agreed. At the very least he misses this week...

Maybe if Brett gives him some of his pain killers he won't be such a pansy.

What does he need pain killers for? His broken toes?

You are going to compare Willis McGahee's injury in college to Ben's injury last night? That is one of the worst comparisons I have ever heard. For even making that comparison I already know that you have never seen McGahee's hit. Why don't you compare it to Joe Theisman's injury too while you are at it.

Everyone needs to relax.  He has a hyperextended knee.  He'll be fine.  You can't tear an MCL or an ACL from the position his leg was hit.  He'll miss at most 1 game.
Are you a doctor? And do you have him on your team.

My guesses would be "no" and "yes".
Actually the answer is YES and NO. I would never ever ever have Big Ben as my fantasy QB ever. Anyone want a sig bet on this one? A bag of ice or him being carted off the field after the game was over is no indication of the extent of the injury. Pick up a dictionary and look up the word...precautionary.
We're all doctors down here, didn't you know that? :excited:

Someone compared it to Harrison, but it's not. Harrison had a complete blowout.. That absolutely didn't happen. But, it surely isn't a complete blowout. Not from that angle. ACL? I doubt it. As many people have stated, that is side to side stability. And, many players not only walk off the field w/ and ACL, but many actually will re-enter the game and play on it. If you blow your left ACL, you can still cut to the left, because your right ACL takes the strain cutting left, and the remaining ligaments in the left leg are taking the strain, which is far less. Edge particularly comes to mind. When he tore his knee up about 5 years ago, he went back in, and they called it a strain for what seemed like an eternity. It wasn't. It seemed longer to me, because he was my #1 pick that year. And, my #2 went down I believe the next week, when Jamal Anderson went out with his 2nd ACL tear.I'm thinking a bone bruise/hyperextension at best, or it's very possible that he has a broken patella, or even a tear in the PCL or LCL. It looked like it may have been a helmet hit on the knee. But, it looked square, so I don't think it's broken (the patella is made to take a direct shot). Lots of things are possible, but I just can't see the ACL there. But, we'll see.I say Ben is out at least 1 week for sure, and probably more like 3-4. That's if I'm right w/ the hyperextension, which is a strain or minor tear in a tendon/ligament. If I'm wrong, and it's a PCL or LCL or broken patella, much more, and probably the season. I'm not a doctor, but I did take Human Physiology. And, I was particularly interested in the human knee and what the various injuries mean in football, and I too have frequented the Holiday Inn Express franchise. :D

It really depends on the degree of the hyperextension. To me it didn't look that bad. It obviously hurts like hell initially, but he'll be back to bending it and should practice on Friday and be a go for this week. But I can understand him missing 1 game.
I didn't think it looked that bad either. Not so sure that he'll play this week though.[hijack..curiosity]If you hyperextend your knee, and there's a lot of swelling, then sometime later the back of the leg from the knee down is black and blue, would that be a tear of some type?[/hijack]

As for Bens toughness. Anybody who questions it hasn't watched the guy play in college or the pros. He is as tough as they come. And, barring a career shortening injury, he will be in the HOF. Dude is a winner, and a gamer, with mad passing skills, and very, very difficult to tackle with quick moves for such a big man. He's been so good in the pros that people forget he came out after his junior year, and he's the age of most rookies now. And, he didn't exactly play at the top level in College. He was at Miami, OH, so the jump to the pros was even bigger. I think he managed it quite well. IMHO, he will be the best of all QB's taken in his draft class, though others went before him.

All the Pitt haters (you know who you are) can revel in this and hope for the worst. That's all well and good, b/c I know scumballs like you exist in the world today...it's a fact of life unfortunatelyI can't stand the spineless posters with ambiguous names and avatars that criticize. It should be mandatory for everyone to reveal their team of choice...
