The 11 teams given as options last week went a combined 8-2; only the Texans (at Jets) and Packers (vs Lions) suffered an L. The Steelers were on a bye following their MNF W.

Though it's probably between the Chiefs and Lions, the Ravens are in that conversation rn. Lamar is having a phenomenal season as a passer, the kind of year that puts him in the same tier as Peyton Manning, Brady, Rodgers and Mahomes as the best quarterbacks of the 21st century.

But as far as balanced teams, no one really combines a good defense with a good offense like the two with the best records. Detroit also has outstanding special teams. One of the best rosters in the NFL (along with the Eagles.) Detroit is currently winning games wtih ease, but they don't hand out any trophies for early November.

I posted in the week 8 thread about who I thought the best team was, and my opinion hasn't changed. The teams that win the Superbowl are usually the ones who are healthiest.

It's seems foolish to do this same routine every week. At this point it seems like BobbyLayne is just seeking validation for the Lions from people who aren't fans of the team or he just wants to get people who don't normally talk about the Lions to talk about them.

I'm out on these thread going forward.

I think there is some truth in a lot of what you said here....including bobby wanting to get some flowers for his team....I remember after KC getting Mahomes and you could kind of see the writing on the wall and they were "on the rise" and appeared to be "the next big thing".....I wanted to tell everybody and have everybody agree with me (here on these boards) and elsewhere....almost baiting people into discussions/arguments to try and pump up my team and the respect level, etc.....it's ok, it's kind of a natural thing to want others to send flowers your way....it makes you feel good...

to answer the question...(and I agree it doesn't really matter "right now")....it's just discussion because its all about January....I think flowers can be sent to KC/DET/PHI/BAL/BUF....I think you could make a strong case for all of them "when healthy"...I'm not really feeling it yet for MIN/GB/SF/WAS/PIT/ATL....

I do like that certain teams are shoring up their rosters in a bid to bolster their chances, should make for an exciting playoffs. With what has so far transpired I like Detroit after picking up Smith to fill in for Hutch as that may have been their one weak link. KC did well to get D-Hop and Hunt while Baltimore added a big body in D. Johnson but they still have a big issue in their secondary. Buffalo adding Coop is good but they also need defensive help, imo.

Eagles, Vikes, Packers are pretenders at this point. Steelers are head scratchers to me.

In terms of DVOA which I believe is a decent predictor, it's the Lions by a lot, then the Ravens, by a lot, then the rest of the field with the Chiefs in 3rd.

But if I'm gambling, I'm not betting against the Chiefs in a matchup of any of these three.

I voted the Lions. They are visibly the best to me and would trounce the Chiefs if they end up meeting in the Super Bowl.

They have something special there.

Chiefs are on the 8th longest win streak consisting of regular and post-season games in NFL history.

And yet 30 people have voted for the Lions so unless Bobby has 29 other log ins, he's kind of on the pulse of how folks might feel
Every season is different, I would say the Chiefs right now until they can be proven otherwise and just a 1 game showdown vs Detroit isn't going to change that
The Chiefs beat everybody and have for many years, the Lions are still ascending

Still the Lions, and it is still not close. I get that the Packers are a mid team, but it is still difficult to win on the road, and even more difficult to win on the road within your division. The fact that they have won at Minn (another mid team) and at GB is pretty impressive.

Yeah, that goes to the "seeking validation."

Nah. I just really like the Lions this year and to me they are better. Chiefs have looked horrible on offense.

Heard on a podcast today: 43 NFL teams have started 8-0, 31 in the Super Bowl era. The 2024 Chiefs have the lowest points differential (+56) of those 43 teams.

Interestingly, this is the 3rd Chiefs team to begin 8-0. The 2003 team (**** Vermeil) went 13-3, lost to the Colts 31-38 in the divisional round. That was the last year Priest Holmes stayed healthy; his production was insane, three straight years over 2K YFS, last two he had 51 TDs in 30 g.

The other 8-0 KCC team was 2013, Andy’s first season. Finished 11-5 and lost the WC 44-45, again to the Colts.

ETA: Thinking about this more, I don’t know that having a low point differential indicates lessor quality. I think it speaks more to the parity & level of competition in the present NFL versus prior eras.

When you have suffered as long as @BobbyLayne (and I) has as a long-time Lions fan, who the hell cares what he does at this point?

You go Bobby!

This isn’t really great analysis from me and I recognize that, but it’s as simple as the Chiefs being reigning champs and undefeated. I’d favor them against anybody on a neutral field.

Detroit and Baltimore have been fantastic. Bills can probably beat any team on a given day. Packers and Vikings can probably battle with anybody and despite an awful injury season I still would fear the Niners in the playoffs.

But yeah it’s KC for me until it’s clearly not.

I'm not one for conspiracy type thinking, but I feel like the Chiefs almost purposefully do just enough to win in the regular season and then turn it up to 100 in the playoffs.

Last year when analyzing the playoff teams and I was looking at all the usual predictors of playoff success, the main area the Chiefs really lacked in compared to the teams with better numbers was point differential which happens to be one of the best predictors. Then they go on to win it all.

Ideally you want to be peaking late in the year. Dan Campbell talked about that throughout last year. Specifically he wanted the four rookie starters (Gibbs, Campbell, LaPorta & Branch) to be playing their best ball in December and January.

This year I haven't heard him talk about that much. Their mantra has been "It takes more" and, so far at least, they've done a really good job of stayed laser focused on the game in front of them. Whether it's a tough opponent like last week or this week, or playing the Titans at home.

Ben Johnson had an interesting quote from one of his mentors from back he was a QB at North Carolina: "I don't know if you can go 18 for 18. But I'm pretty sure you can go 1 for 1 eighteen times." They are so detail oriented. Last year they were bottom 5 in dropped passes (32); only BUF, CLE, KC & LAR had more. Why would that be....everyone on the team has good hands. He challenged all the receivers, backs and tight ends to make that a point of emphasis to eliminate focus drops. He told the quarterbacks "This is everyone's fault - Jared you need to do a better job placing the ball." Through 8 games this year they have 1 dropped pass; the next lowest team has 4, only a handful are in single digits (Packers have like 20 already.)

Love how much time they spend on self scouting and always pushing for incremental improvement. 1% better each day.

The Bills are not tops, but I am excited by the possibility they could get healthy before the playoffs. The division will wrap up early and two of their last three are against the Pats.

They are usually fighting to the last game and cluster injuries at one position on defence have killed them.

Last year they lost all their LBs and had to pull Kline off an RV trip with his family to play MLB against Mahomes 🤢

Two years ago, their third string safety in for Hamlin (who was himself in for Hyde) got beat for two TDs against the Bengals in the first quarter.

Hoping to see what they can do closer to full strength 🤞🏻

Total homer viewpoint here but the Eagles are a Saquon dropped dump pass (a pass that he catches 99/100 times) from being 7-1. That 1 came with missing AJ Brown, Davonte Smith and Lane Johnson.

They’ve been slowly putting together better games. Seems like their soft practice schedule in TC might have slowed their adapting to two new coordinators, but they appear to be getting it now.

Defense hasn’t given up more than 17 points since week 4.

Hurts quietly has cleaned up the turnovers-hasn’t had one since the TB debacle in week 4. The eagles, when AJ Brown is on the field and Hurts doesn’t have a turnover basically never lose.

After an anemic stretch of scoring 21, 12, 16 points before the bye they are averaging over 28 ppg over the last 4 weeks.

Back to back short-week NFCE games in Dallas and against Washington. If they can win these next two they have to be in the convo.

And the Eagles will probably lose two of their next 4 games. I am not sure the last 4 games conclusively prove they have overcame the inconsistency and mistakes shown in the first 4 games. Definitely a contender that can beat anyone, but have not looked the part of the best team in football. Maybe #4 at this point.

Yeah they have the talent to be elite. The question for me is when the head coach screws things up. That will be tested when they face better opponents. But I definitely think they’re top 5.

I do believe this.

I've mentioned before on this forum that you can tell when Reid's OC's call plays and when he takes over. And I firmly believe that in the regular season, the OC's call a lot of the plays under the mandate from Reid that if the you know what hits the fan in a game he takes over.

And they certainly don't call their best stuff in the regular season. It's like a totally different offense when the playoffs hit. I also believe that Reid puts some of this crazy **** in games on purpose just to get it on film to distract other teams from the stuff he really likes.

And come playoff time, he calls plays and almost always they are deviations from what he ran in the regular season out of the same formations.

It kinda is Detroit but as long as the Chiefs are undefeated and have Mahomes I cannot vote against them. Now if Baltimore had a defense...

Does want everyone want to know who I had in BOTH conference championship games in the preseason?

AFC: Chiefs over Bills

NFC: Lions over Eagles

Super Bowl: Lions over Chiefs

I don't have time to list my preseason playoff picture, but let's just say that right now, I'm beginning to smell $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$!
