Roethlesberger's knee (2 Viewers)

As for Bens toughness. Anybody who questions it hasn't watched the guy play in college or the pros. He is as tough as they come. And, barring a career shortening injury, he will be in the HOF.

First 20 NFL games: 18-2 W-L, 103.9 QB Rating, 24/11 TD/INTRegarding the injury let's see what Cowher says at noon. Nothing against Batch or Maddox, they may be able to guide this team to a 13-3 or 12-4 regular season. But the Steelers need Big Ben to compete with NE and Indy in the playoffs.

Dude is a winner, and a gamer, with mad passing skills, and very, very difficult to tackle with quick moves for such a big man. He's been so good in the pros that people forget he came out after his junior year, and he's the age of most rookies now. And, he didn't exactly play at the top level in College. He was at Miami, OH, so the jump to the pros was even bigger. I think he managed it quite well. IMHO, he will be the best of all QB's taken in his draft class, though others went before him.

Ben's mom???

Don't get me wrong, I'm a Pitt hater, but out of respect, not spite. Much in the same way I hate the Yankees with all the white hot passion of ten thousand burning suns. And, I'm a Pats fan. I was just commenting on the injury, and my admiration for what Big Ben brings to the table.

All the Pitt haters (you know who you are) can revel in this and hope for the worst. That's all well and good, b/c I know scumballs like you exist in the world today...it's a fact of life unfortunately

I can't stand the spineless posters with ambiguous names and avatars that criticize. It should be mandatory for everyone to reveal their team of choice...
:fishing: :ptts: I am not a Steelers fan, but despite my previous joke, I do like Big Ben. I don't "revel" in injuries, although I do like seeing Charlie Batch get another chance.

EDIT: I didn't state my favorite team, as if it matters. Despite underperforming and needing a new QB, OL, GM, owner and probably HC, I stand behind my Lions.

As tough as they come? but he is tougher than his comments make him sound. You'll have to convince me that he's tougher than Leftwich, Favre or McNair to make that statement stand up.

HOF? Way too early to tell on that, there's been more than one player who started strong and then bombed. I'd bet against Ben bombing, but you never know for sure.

Best in his class? maybe, but that Eli kid looks pretty damn good with a somewhat weaker team.

And San Diego, Denver, J'Ville, KC and Cinci. The AFC is, IMHO, wide open this year, with a number of teams that can get it done.

That's too bad.  I don't love the Steelers, and I know they've caused a lot of huge injuries to the Patriots over the last couple years, but Roethlisberger has been special.  Without him, they're ####ed.

Announced a Pittsburgh Steelers publicist: "Ben is not going to be available now."

"Or ever," Ben Roethlisberger muttered as he pitched himself into his Qualcomm Stadium locker room pew following his side's 24-22 escape against the Chargers last night before a record assembly here of 68,537.

Roethlisberger was yielding to the emotion of the moment with his remark concerning his availability to the media, but indications are that the Steelers might have to get along for awhile with their No. 3 quarterback, Charlie Batch.

Their No. 2 forward passer, Tommy Maddox, suffered a calf injury in practice Friday and won't be active again for three or four weeks. While the Steelers did not issue a report on Roethlisberger's condition, coach Bill Cowher said, "It looks bad."

When Cowher was asked what about it looked bad, he could not say. He admitted he was judging by what he had seen on the stadium JumboTron and from what he had been told.

The quarterback was hurt with 1:18 remaining in the game on a play on which he reached Antwaan Randle El with a 9-yard pass to the San Diego 29-yard line. On this play the Chargers' Luis Castillo appeared to hit Roethlisberger at ankle level as he was delivering the football.

After Roethlisberger's injury, Batch arrived, handed off three times to Jerome Bettis, and Jeff Reed then spun across the 40-yard field goal that with six seconds left lifted Pittsburgh to its third victory against a single loss.

Roethlisberger, a 17-for-26 passer last night for 225 yards and a touchdown – he also rushed for a touchdown – was able to pull on his jeans in his team's dressing quarters. He was not taped or bandaged in any way. While Cowher could not specify Roethlisberger's status, Dan Rooney, the chairman of the Steelers, said his understanding was that Roethlisberger had either suffered a knee or hamstring injury.

"It was as good a game as I have seen," Rooney said.

Cowher made the same point. "A classic football game," the Pittsburgh coach called it. "It was one of those games where in the fourth quarter you get the sense that the team that is going to have the ball last is going to win."

That team was Pittsburgh, which profited, by Cowher's account, from two meaningful developments – checking LaDainian Tomlinson when he tried to run for two dividend points after the Chargers had taken a 22-21 lead on a 3-yard Tomlinson run with 4:42 to go, and Cedrick Wilson returning the ensuing kickoff 29 yards to the Pittsburgh 38.

"The kickoff return was very, very big because that allowed us to do what we did," Cowher said.

When it came time for Reed to kick, everybody in the Pittsburgh party seemingly was confident he would succeed.

"Jeff is pretty clutch," Cowher said.

Rooney noted that Reed is leading the NFL in placements of 50 or more yards. He has failed on just one field goal attempt this season. Against New England, he hit a 47-yarder, but there was a penalty on the play. From 5 yards farther back, he missed.

"Dee-fense!" is a Pittsburgh word. It first was voiced, with appropriate emphasis, in Three Rivers Stadium in the 1970s when the Steelers were the scourge of the NFL. This Pittsburgh team, it seems, also can play a little defense. No one has run much on the Steelers this year, the Chargers included.

"Our defense played its tails off," Cowher said. "Our defense stepped up."

Cowher labeled Tomlinson "the best back in the game today," but he had just 62 yards rushing and a 3.4 average.

Bill Cowher has his press conference today at noon so I am sure he will have some kind of report although it may be too early to tell. Their flight didn't get in to Pittsburgh until a few hours ago so I am not sure how much time they will have to make a thorough diagnosis.
I can't listen to it, but I assume it's set to start around right now... please let us know anything Cowher has to say about Ben's knee. Thanks

MRI showed hyperextension of knee and bone bruise. From Cowher press conference. Also says won't rule him out for Sunday.

If this is a serious injury, this season is all but a wash. They simply cannot expect Charlie Batch to keep them competitive with the Indianpolises, New Englands, hell - even the Cincinnatis of the league.

:excited: :towelwave: Let him sit a week if he's gimpy at all, but that's fantastic news.
Agreed. We need to think long-term here. I am just glad there is apparently no ligament damage; that would have been catastrophic.

I would agree too. But I don't think it's the type of injury that will get worse by playing. Rest all/most of the week and he should be good to go.

While I'm happy for Ben and Pittsburgh fans, and really for the NFL, IMO it's good to have the Steelers as one of the better teams and Ben on the field, I really wanted to see Batch get another chance to show what he can do.

Chargers fan here and even I was sick to see the injury and I'm glad it's looks like it won't be that serious. Great game last night and here's hoping the two teams can meet in the playoffs with a different outcome this time.

Great news, but I think the not ruling him out this week is just coach speak. It'll be sore, and I don't think he plays on Sunday. AS for making it worse by playing. Probably not. But, what it does is put stress on other parts of the body to take the stress off the injured part of the body, leaving them succeptible to injury. Remember Terrell Davis? He had a high ankle sprain, came back too soon, got hurt again, and again, and was out of the league in the end. Keep him out, and get to 90% then bring him back. He's a strong pocket passer, but his movement in the pocket is what makes him special.

I agree 100%. In the playoffs I hope it's not nearly this close...hehe.

Am I the only person that didnt think the hit looked too bad to begin with?
Nope. If it's from Bens right, the ACL is gone. But, from that angle it shouldn't have been catastrophic. Don't get me wrong, it was a hard shot, with the leg planted, just thankfully it was from the from, and not the side.

:towelwave: Got this email from Adam Schefter about Ben's knee:Cecil: Just got to Miami after being in San Diego while preparing to head back to Denver. Sheesh....They're traveling my ### off. Much of it is terrific, some laborious. And yes, Big Ben is all right. Cowher told me after the game on Monday night that he was relieved and I used the info on my post-game report.Cheers!Adam

:hey:
Well, I thought it looked kinda bad, but I was trying to convince myself that because it was straight-on and that it wasn't contorted to grotesque angles (McGahee, Harrison) that it was just a hyper-extension. Stillers dodged a headshot with this one.
