RUMOR: Marvin Lewis will not be retained and Ochocinco will not return (1 Viewer)

Jason Wood

Zoo York
Seeing a lot of Twitter chatter among NFL folks that Marvin Lewis won't be retained and that Chad Ochocinco has been told they won't pick up their team option. But I checked the major wires for confirmation and haven't found any yet. I'll update the thread (or remove as necessary) if we get confirmation of this one way or another.

Again, not knowing if this is true, I have to say that seeing the backup Bengals WRs look like world beaters this past weekend did make me think it was time Cincinnati moved on entirely. I think it's one of those situations that would benefit both sides. If Chad went to a better team, I think he would once again play like a man possessed.

True about the part that they need to let those guys get first team, game reps. I remember in the mid-90s when the Giants let go of their best receiver (Chris Calloway) to make room for their young pups (Ike Hilliard and Amani Toomer, who was actually a returner in 1998) and the rest is history. Of course, Calloway played two meaningless years beyond that...not sure if Ocho will follow suit.

If someone had told you in 2006 that NFC champ Rex Grossman, Ochocinco, Santana Moss, and Mike Shanahan would end up on the same team together, and none of them on their current team, in less than five years, and they put a gun to your head and made you guess one and only one team where they'd end up together, which team would you have guessed? You'd probably have been right.

Palmer looked like an All-Pro QB vs the Chargers D without Owens and Ocho.

Is the option going to be picked up on the T-Ocho Show?

the bengals dont have a gm and force their coaches to do all scouting and talent evaluation. they are hopeless until those issues are resolved.

Cinci goes from playoff contender over the last few years to back in shambles again. Oh my...oh my...my my my.

theres a ton of luck in football. last yr the bengals had an easy schedule and won almost all of the close games. this year, they had one of the hardest in the league, and lost all of the close games. iirc they were only blown out in 2 games: pats and jets. were very close to beating the steelers and saints, crushed the vegas darling chargahhhs, beat the ravens.

point is, this years bengals team was as good as last years, and even played similarly well.

Is this true?
Pretty close to true. The owner is the GM and isn't good at it... and they might have 4 scouts. So the Bengals want to pay Chad 3.5 million to not play for them... instead of another 2.5 to stay? That doesn't sound like a good business deal.

I wouldn't expect Lewis to be unemployed for very long. He may not have had post-season success, but his teams have always been competitive and never quit even when their season is completely in the toilet.

lewis seems great at getting his teams to play hard and managing egos and the locker. ofc, he is proly the worst game day and time management coach in the league, now that chilly is gone.

What kind of knee injury was TO's? Will he be back next year...or was this a swan song.
Torn meniscus... he says he'll play again next year.
I wonder if anyone will bother with him or Rmoss?
Why wouldn't someone sign TO? He looked very good this year. He's absolutely worth a 1 year deal to certain teams.
Id say he's worth a 1yr deal for every team. He had a great year all things considered

seriously? IIRC no one but Cincy wanted him and I doubt solid contenders want his presence in the lockerroom. We will see

After his crap year in Buffalo many folk thought he was done. He showed he still has talent and still busts his butt to put up stats. There are some teams that could use such a player.

Once again he became a LR cancer down the stretch. This guy will never get it. Now he's coming off of a knee surg... on the wrong side of 30... Who really needs a WR bad enough to write this guy a check?

not sure that inflammatory comments about the organization=locker room cancer. id imagine the players agree with him, bc, well, it was true. regardless, outspokenness and inflammatory potential from an aging loudmouth, true or not, are not really enticing features to new teams.

When did he become a locker room cancer? Did I miss something?

Surprised that NFL folks would have an insight into the muddled mind that is Mike Brown.

That said, the one tea-leaf I've seen that would indicate Marvin is gone is that a Hobson article on bengals.com said he was likely to be gone. While Hobson's writing is "independent" of the team, you have to figure he knows from something.

Ocho is an interesting question. If they let him go, Ocho gets $3.5m from them. If they keep him, Ocho gets $6m. Would another team offer a meaningful draft pick to get him at $6m/year? I'm not so sure. I'm okay if they let him go and go with the kids.

The main thing isn't whether Marvin goes. It's whether Bratkowski goes. That would be the better move.

This. Brat is the worst. Marvin has his fair share of troubles. He isnt a good game coach. Not good at using timeouts, not good at deciding when and what to challenge. I think he is a decent talent evaluator and would think he could probably pull off the role of GM at some point.

I'd be totally on board if they bumped him up to a newly-created GM position, made Zimmer HC and got rid of Brat. Though I actually think Zimmer at HC makes Brat more likely to stay believe it or not.-QG

totally agree. Mike Brown has to realize this is no longer the 1960s, and it is time to move forward.

This year's team also had the most players on IR of any team in the NFL. Whoever coaches the Bengals next year will inherit a team that is still very close to a contender with their core talent. The caveat is QB. If the Bengals jettison Carson Palmer and don't have a ready to play replacement it will be horrible. Typical Mike Brown move is drafting Cam Newton and not signing him until week 3. I think Benson has a better chance being on the roster next year than #85.The young WRs will be fine.

I don't think so. TO may be right to an extent about it starting at the top, but I have never seen anything that leads me to believe that the locker room isn't behind Lewis and the coaching staff. TO is an outlier that makes comments like this everywhere he goes. I don't think he represents the team at all on this one. Unrelated- like everyone else said above we need a new OC and better QB play (even if that comes from Palmer) more than anything else. I think whether Lewis stays or goes will have very little impact. He's an OK coach that can be replaced by another OK coach.

Bratkoski has to go. I am OK if Marvin gets resigned.

I'd be OK if they elevate Zampese to OC.

The Scouting Staff is comprised of:

Mike Brown(Owner) Katie Blackburn(Mike Browns son/daughter) Pete Blackburn, Katies Husband/wife)

Jim Lippincott(He was the fat Turk on HBO's Hard Knocks, that woke guys up at 4am, and told them they were flying home.....you know, the guy with good people skills) and then Duke Tobin, is a scout.

At one point, they had John Cooper as a special adviser.

That above, is the Bengals Scouting Staff

So sad because it's true.... As long as Mike Brown is in there, the Bengals ceiling is the first round of the playoffs..... and that's the tippy top of the ceiling.

They probably subscribe to Waldman's Rookie Scouting Report. It's all they need.

Their site has Tobin listed as Director of Player Personnel... Then Greg Seamon as a scout and Earl Biederman, John Cooper, and Bill Tobin scouting consultants. It's still lol though.

really makes me think marvin is an incredible coach. despite a huge professional disadvantage in the selection of players, and in his own game management, this team is fairly competitive.

I missed Seamon and Biederman. When the heck were they added?LOL.....Biederman has West of the Mississippi, and Seamon has East of it.
