I love the fact that he sends fake Dooms to shows that rob the gate receipts and bounce. He's also the best producer I know at getting fans to buy the same beat 3-4 times. His best work has always been when he's rapping over someone else's beats. It's like he can't do both at the same time well.

Rakim is probably your favorite rapper's favorite rapper.

I've always looked at Rakim as more than a rapper, he was the turn of an era. Before Rakim, all the rappers sounded like Kurtis Blow (not saying he started that sound, just easy to associate the sound) and Furious Five ish.

Rakim changed hip hop and started the golden age.

ETA: MC Shan might have been the last rapper worth mentioning to have the "pre Rakim sound".

I've always looked at Rakim as more than a rapper, he was the turn of an era. Before Rakim, all the rappers sounded like Kurtis Blow (not saying he started that sound, just easy to associate the sound) and Furious Five ish.

Rakim is the reason for 2 things - lyrics with substance (yes, guys like KRS-One were doing it, but didn't catch like Rakim)

2) he's the reason rap stopped being a auctioneer contect - slow, methodical, cool, almost "lazy sounding". Unfortunately, MA$E took it to an extreme and rapped molasses, but you'll get that when someone changes the game.

Russell Simmons, Jay-Z, Dr. Dre. These guys built hip-hop empires that have stood the test of time. There's really no one else on that particular level as far as a career goes. You can certainly say that you prefer the sound of RZA to the sound of Dre or vice versa, but there's no debate that Dre's overall body of work dwarfs anything RZA has ever done.
