but the last MC I fell head over heels for was probably MF Doom/Madvillain...
This explains a lot.
oh come on... don't say those things.

He's an absolutely brilliant MC.

you're joking, right?
The biggest point in his favor is he can be very witty and clever at times. But he comes across as lazy, uninspired and offbeat a lot of times. Like all he is trying to do get is get his paycheck and leave. He sounds like an amateur when on a track with a real rapper. Too much drug use IMO.

I love the fact that he sends fake Dooms to shows that rob the gate receipts and bounce. He's also the best producer I know at getting fans to buy the same beat 3-4 times. His best work has always been when he's rapping over someone else's beats. It's like he can't do both at the same time well.

They really need to make a documentary about him. LOL.

The 3 most important hip hop albums, without question:

36 chambers

illmatic

paid in full

the NY scene, is bar none, the epitome of rap.

west coast is an easily consumable product
Awful. Awful.

The correct answer is/

Raising hell

Straight outta Compton

License to ill

Without those three rap is still an underground movement with no broad appeal.

I cant argue with this. Raising Hell might have been the most influential album in history. Definitely the first album i listened to.

I love Eric b and rakim but what made that album historically significant?

Doom is Top 5 Dead or Alive
You dont gotta tell me.

Only knuckleheads who cry tears with Drake would think he doesn't crush a mic amongst the greatest
My Top 5 Dead or Alive (considering entire body of work. Can't take many dudes with 1 or 2 albums)

1. Nas

2. Ice Cube

3. Pharoahe Monch

With the except of Cube, those are all talented rappers whose voices I can't stand to listen to.
 @ hating on Nas' voice
He's boring as hell, absolutely no charisma in his raps at all. Frankly I don't how amazing his lyrics are if he puts me to sleep after 30 seconds.

I can tell you what made it significant to me - bit that's irrelevant.

Do some digging on the album, and what the biggest and best in the game have said about it.

Also, for those of who you like to get in depth about albums, check out Check the Technique by Brian Coleman

Rakim is something we should all be able to agree on.

We can argue East Coast/West Coast, Tupac/Biggie and even Dre/RZA...but we should all be able to agree on Rakim.

We all have to have a Rosetta stone to refer back to in order to decipher what we are all trying to say...and Paid in Full is it.

Try to argue it and you just show your damned ignorance and false bravado.

I've always looked at Rakim as more than a rapper, he was the turn of an era. Before Rakim, all the rappers sounded like Kurtis Blow (not saying he started that sound, just easy to associate the sound) and Furious Five ish.

Rakim changed hip hop and started the golden age.

ETA: MC Shan might have been the last rapper worth mentioning to have the "pre Rakim sound".

I heard it described once as "Rakim was the first rapper that came along that made you care about the lyrics and not just the beat".

Starting a group called the ASAP Mob than having all the artist's names start with ASAP is the dumbest long-term idea I've ever seen. Especially since they're all releasing solo albums.

Rakim is the reason for 2 things - lyrics with substance (yes, guys like KRS-One were doing it, but didn't catch like Rakim)

2) he's the reason rap stopped being a auctioneer contect - slow, methodical, cool, almost "lazy sounding". Unfortunately, MA$E took it to an extreme and rapped molasses, but you'll get that when someone changes the game.

Rakim ####s on any MC to breath, imo. There are others I prefer to listen to on the regular, but when I need the realest deal - Paid in Full

My thoughts on MF Doom:

  • The mask schtick never worked for me
  • His sounds seemed like a wannabe knockoff Wu (old Doom cartoon skits before or after most songs, like Wu with old kung fu flicks).
  • His verses don't always match up to the beats.
  • He peaked as Zev Love X in K.M.D in 3rd Base's "Gas Face".
  • Always seemed aloof since the early 90's
  • He gets ZERO love from NY/NJ DJs due to the odd #### he's done over the years.
  • Has ZERO industry respect. - Yes, industry respect is important if you want to make it in this game!
Is he good in spots, on a few tracks? Yes.

Top 5 ever? LOL - Please go back to your backpacks and dubstep ####. TIA.

All 6 albums are consensus all time top 10 albums according to any hip hop critic. Where they end up in that top 10 depends on any number of variables (when you grew up, where you grew up, style preference, etc), but saying one list is awful compared to another is just uneducated.

Doom peaked as Zev Love?

The two best records he ever released were Operation Doomsday (as Doom) and Madvillainy (as Madvillain)

Where'd you get that nonsense from?

I can understand if you dont like his style - he's like the Neil Young of hip hop - you love him, or hate him... his stuff of off time and strange, purposely. not because he lacks skill. He is a phenomenal artist, and as for the "zero" industry respect - you must solely be speaking about Corporations, because cats in the rap game LOVE Doom.

I love the Danger Doom album as well.

I was listening to some MF Doom at work today. Hate the amount of overrating he gets from his fans.
Agree. Never got the "underground hype" for him. It's hard to tell if he has an off-beat style or just had crappy production.

Russell Simmons, Jay-Z, Dr. Dre. These guys built hip-hop empires that have stood the test of time. There's really no one else on that particular level as far as a career goes. You can certainly say that you prefer the sound of RZA to the sound of Dre or vice versa, but there's no debate that Dre's overall body of work dwarfs anything RZA has ever done.
Bump for recent info.

Dre is better at hologram performances too. The show where RZA brought ODB on stage as a hologram was so low-rent it's pathetic.
