San Francisco 49ers - link to new 2023 thread in latest post (1 Viewer)

Agree, let him rest. Let Deebo rest too.

Would love the 1 seed, bye, and home field throughout, but Giants are 14 point dogs.

Odds to win the SB are now equal between the Niners and Eagles, both at +550.

Yeah, Daboll initially said he wasn't going to rest starters this week, but now that he has come to his senses, he will. Eagles aren't going to lose to a depeted Giants team at home, even if Hurts doesn't play

Sucks, but 49ers shouldn't have lost to the Bears or the friggin Broncos :wall:
.

Kyle said it's still the plan to hopefully have Jimmy available late in the playoffs. It'd be nice to have Jimmy in case something happens to Brock. I do NOT want to see Josh Johnson at any time other than maybe next week.

Garoppolo went down with a broken foot during Week 13. There is a slight chance that the quarterback could be available in some capacity should the 49ers make a deep enough playoff run.

"That's still the goal," Shanahan said. "... I think he can put a little weight on [the foot], but he's not out there running and stuff like that. That's a little bit aways."

Deebo and Mitchell back this week

"Much like Elijah, Samuel has practiced both days this week—both days, Wednesday, Thursday in our work week," Lynch said Friday morning on KNBR's Murph & Mac show. "He's looking good out there. We've got to finish this week and make sure he responds well, but all indications are Deebo's in a real good place."

Is he expected to play?

"Yeah," Lynch responded. "I'd say, right now, I expect him to be out there."

On Thursday, head coach Kyle Shanahan said he expects Mitchell to get at least some playing time against the Cardinals. Lynch indicated the same thing while praising his running back. The 49ers are expected to activate Mitchell from the injured reserve list before Sunday.

"The thing we've seen from Elijah in the past, he's a natural runner, so he can shake rust off in a hurry," Lynch said. "There really is no rust with him. He can go in a game and produce at a high level. We've been doing a great job, our rehab folks, of getting him up to speed. His conditioning level is high.

"He's practiced this week. Barring any setbacks, we expect to see him out there. For how many carries and all that? I don't think we've really nailed that down. We'll have somewhat of a pitch count of how many touches we want to get him."

Lynch on CMC:

"He's had a high workload here of late. We want him right for the playoffs, but first, he's just got to be right. If he's healthy, he'll play, and we'll see where that goes."

Lenoir is a liability. Suddenly, our defense doesn't look so stout.

I see shootouts coming in the playoffs...hopefully our offense can keep up!

IDK, I was feeling the same as you, but I don’t think they really took this game seriously… Also 3 turnovers.

I hate the Giants, prob my most hated non-Division team.

Let’s get our starters out.

ETA: Lenoir no good.

49ers’ offensive otput under Brock Purdy:

33 vs Miami
35 vs Tampa Bay
21 vs Seattle (short week)
37 vs Washington
37 vs Las Vegas
38 vs Arizona (and counting)

Yeahhhhh buddy!

Brock Purdy threw 13 TD passes in 6 games, which would put him on pace for 37 over 17 games.

To put that in perspective, The 49ers single season TD pass record is 36 by Steve Young in 1998.

- Al Sacco

I hate watching Seattle, even when the Niners open up the whoop assssssssss on them. But so be it

Niners 37, Seachickens 3

I don't think Lenoir is playing horrible, but since he is the weakest link in the secondary, that's where teams go, so looks worse than it is.

On the big play to AJ Green yesterday, he just got posted up by the old man.

But yeah, I miss Moseley

This team.

It just feels different this year.

The pieces are in place. The stage is set.

One game at a time.

4 wins away from Lombardi #6.

I think I speak for all of us when I say we are ready. We are ready to feel what its like to celebrate a SB win again. It's long overdue.

Let's. F'n. Go.

I don't want to sound overconfident but I feel like this one is a blowout...seattle is just not good
That should be the case. Between the rivalry and, as Bill Simmons often says, the “nobody believes in us factor,” I could see it being closer than I’d prefer. I think it’d take a Purdy meltdown for the Niners to lose though.

I gotta admit, watching the GB - DET game last night, towards the end of the game I was rooting for Green Bay...they look even worse than Seattle and I think we would've crushed them.

From an article on The Athletic
Re: Lenoir

The good news: Lenoir has allowed just one passing touchdown this season. The bad: It came on Sunday, another game in which he was picked on by the opponent.

Lenoir was targeted eight times and allowed six catches for 93 yards. Obviously, the biggest came on the opening drive when A.J. Green snagged a jump ball, dodged a poor tackle attempt from Tashaun Gipson Sr., then stiff-armed Lenoir to the ground on his way to the end zone.

Yes, there was a well-placed arm to Lenoir’s back as Green leaped for the ball. But it’s the second time in two games that Lenoir has been in good position against a big, veteran receiver but failed to make a play. Over the last five weeks, he’s been targeted 35 times and given up 25 catches for 312 yards.

------------------

I'm surprised that AJ Green TD was the only TD Lenior has given up. It seems every week he's in position to make a play on deep passes but always whiffs. On the AJ Green TD, that should have been as easy pick, or at the very least, knocked down. He was in between Green and the ball. Zero reason Green should catch that.

If I'm ANY QB facing SF, I throw at Lenior all day. Ryans needs to figure something out immediately or it could get ugly real fast for Lenior. You can bet Pete Carroll knows all about him and will attack our most glaring weakness on defense.

Jump Ball. AJ Green 6'4". Lenoir is 5' 10". It happens in the NFL. Green was in good position behind Lenoir to give him a little shove without it being seen by the official. Just a good play on Green's part.

Gave up a big play to Adams that he really couldn't have played much better. Adams made an amazing play on the ball (although he trapped it against the ground with his body and they didn't have enough video evidence to overturn. Had they called it incomplete, it would have been upheld). I think he has played pretty decent, but as I said earlier in the thread, Ward has been so good that they are going to attack Lenoir, making it look worse than it really is.

Lenoir will be fine

I don't see this as a blowout at all. The better team should win, but this is a divisional game and Walker is a pretty solid back. Purdy doesn't have to have a meltdown; he can just be mediocre and the Seahawks have a chance.

49ers 27
Seahawks 21

Lenoir is a below average CB at the moment (55 PFF grade). He may get better but he and Hufanga are weak links in coverage right now.

PFF really isn't that meaningful.

Virtually every team has a CB that teams attack. The way of the NFL. These teams aren't dummies (for the most part). They will go after the least effective CB, which in this case is Lenoir. Other than the Raider game, 49ers haven't exactly suffered because of this. Young player who will get better.

As Ryans pointed out after the Raider game, some guys were playing hero ball. Might as well have pointed directly at Hufanga. He has made some great plays this year but bad stuff happens when you improvise.

Lenoir and Hufanga both have to play better.

Leading up to the near-disaster against the Las Vegas Raiders, players on defense — Fred Warner in particular — had mentioned there were a plethora of things to clean up.

The opening 73-yard flea flicker touchdown vs Arizona can viewed simultaneously through optimistic and pessimistic lenses.

On one hand, Deommodore Lenoir had excellent position on Green. On the other hand, he got absolutely Moss’d, and then Green shook off him and Tashaun Gipson Sr. en route to a “C’Mon Man”-style touchdown.

There was a 3rd-and-14 converted by Arizona for 17 yards when Blough checked the ball down to Corey Clement. Talanoa Hufanga was the lone man to stop the play, and opted to charge downhill.

There’s an antsy-ness to Hufanga’s play. He’s an instinctual player who, for better or worse, makes decisions assertively. It’s certainly preferable to someone who is consistently hesitant.

That playmaking panache he offered early in the year seems to have dried up. The 49ers defense is consistently susceptible on underneath throws. Hufanga, rather than working the angle to direct ball-carriers back towards help, bursts downhill where he’s frequently cut out of plays.

He’s costing the 49ers, and offenses have recognized his desire to time snaps, and attack the backfield. Against the Raiders, he was clearly responsible for the first touchdown to Darren Waller, biting on a play-action fake. He recognized it the second time around and needs to continue to make those adjustments.

There are a host of near explosives he makes. But they’re not coming off with the regularity they did early in the year, and when he whiffs, it usually results in a chunk gain.

He needs to be steadier in the playoffs. Consistent playmaking isn’t a necessity from safeties in this defense. Most of Tashaun Gipson Sr.’s team-leading five interceptions, including the two on Sunday, came from defensive line pressure and remaining sound on the backend.

Lenoir, meanwhile, remains in generally solid position. But his size, at a listed 5’10”, continues to show up as a major issue. He was projected as a slot corner and the team’s fourth-choice outside corner for a reason.

While Pro Football Focus is an imperfect metric, it tends to give a general idea of player performance. Among 136 qualified corners, Emmanuel Moseley, with a 73.5 grade, ranked 28th in coverage. Lenoir ranks 117th (19th-worst).

He was attacked with multiple high point balls against the Raiders, and while A.J. Green clearly extended his forearms on that flea flicker reception, it was Lenoir’s size, more than anything, that cost him. Even when he has leverage on his assignment, he’s allowing receptions

Teams are going to continue to attack him and Hufanga in coverage because there’s no other area to attack in this defense, and those two have looked susceptible to big plays.

Pretty damn good injury news for the 49ers:

Every key player who was questionable coming into the week practiced in some capacity today.

Tues Practice Report

DNP: DL Bosa (resting player), QB Garoppolo (foot), CB Thomas (ankle)

Limited: DL Armstead foot, ankle), OL Banks (ankle, knee), LB Flannigan-Fowles (neck), LB Greenlaw (back), DT Kinlaw (knee), RB McCaffrey (knee)

Full: DL Kevin Givens (knee)

DeMeco ain't no dummy, he wants no part of that organization.

Former Texans linebacker DeMeco Ryans, 49ers' highly regarded defensive coordinator, not expected to pursue [The Houston Texans head coach] opening at this time, according to sources. Texans do have interest in Ryans, though. Doesn't mean he can't change his mind. He's on Broncos' interview list.

Please keep him out of the AFC south. Although Vrabs vs Ryan could be fun.

Is everyone else feeling like SF is the best bet in the NFC?
Depends if Jalen Hurts is still not running due to his shoulder injury. I'd take the Eagles with a healthy Jalen, a gimpy Jalen like we saw against the Giants and I'd take SF.
SF has more problems with running QBs than you'd expect from an otherwise great defense. That's not a great matchup for the Niners if he's healthy.

It will be raining for the game Saturday which will add a wrinkle.

Rainy and windy. Gusts to like 20mph or something.
Would seem to favor the 49ers based on running game and shorter passing game.
Hopefully the weather won't be as bad as it was in the Bears game this year or Washington game a couple of years ago, but the inclement weather seems to be more of an equalizer than something good teams can take advantage of.

I honestly think it depends on the makeup of the teams playing. Being a good defensive team with a strong running game and playmakers that thrieve on RAC on short passes makes it less of a concern to me. A team like say the Vikings that have a poor run D and normally play in a dome would be a bigger issue.

Most surprising stat I've seen this week:

49er defense ranks the last 4 weeks:

Pass YPG: 259 (26th)
Comp Pct: 71.2 (30th)
Pass Rtg: 95.6 (28th)
RZ TD Pct: 76.7 (T-25th)

Opponents: SEA, WSH, LV. ARZ

WHAT THE BLEEP HAPPENED?!

Most recent report I saw was that heavy winds and rain should end by about noon, with lighter wind (@ 10mph) and light showers through the game. If that's true, the biggest thing will be keeping the field in decent shape until afternoon, and then they should be fine.

All that precision movement and cutting required by the Niners run and short passing game depend on can go to crap in bad weather, however. Hopefully conditions will be mild by game time.

Waking up a little nervous, nobody anywhere giving the Hawks a chance, which does scare me.

While SF clearly is the better team, they still need to go and play good ball, execute, and get the win.

Gameday baby, LFG!!!

I hear you, but I think Kyle is really good about not letting them get too overconfident, especailly in a playoff game, and especially after the Raiders game. He will have them focused but loose.

high winds ( 20 mph) and rain in SF area? I'd be worried if I was a Niner fan. Seattle plays in this weather all the time.
Kyle Shanahan will play it close to the vest like he always does in playoff games. Only twice in his 6 playoff games have the Niners gone over 23 pts. so this is like a close game, low scoring affair. a few weeks ago they eeked out a win vs. seattle, 21-13. at some point brock purdy is going to have to put the team on his back. Like Kyle Brandt was saying, there will be a' 3rd and 9 play, late, that purdy will have to come up big..' I'm just not sold on his abilities this has the chance to be his worst game since being the starter.the playoff atmosphere might get the best of him. Pete Carrol knows how to coach playoff games hes going to have some new wrinkles for purdy, some trickeration for the SF defense too. Seattle's front 7 has been a sack machine the last 4 games I'd imagine at least one brody purdy pick 6 is in the forecast.maybe a fumblaya in a key spot too.
