San Francisco 49ers - link to new 2023 thread in latest post (1 Viewer)

In the conference champ game with a last pick in the draft rookie QB on an 8 game win streak is beyond incredible. Purdy continues to show this game isn't too big for him. Played well all things considered. Made some huge 3rd down throws when needed most. Stoked about the future. This season might be all about finding a true diamond in the rough. To do what he's done thus far regardless of the talent around him is pretty awesome. Defense won the day and Kittle did Kittle things. What a game.

Philly is a force. Will take a monumental effort to get past them. Feels like the winner is in the drivers seat for the SB. House money at this point IMO. What a great game! Love this team. And what a story thus far for Purdy. It's hard to truly put into perspective what he's doing given his draft status and NFL experience. The pressure at this stage is hard to fathom and he's been handling like a multi-year vet. Looking forward to what should be an epic NFC champ game. And whatever happens beating Dallas and Seattle combined with the emergence of Brock makes this entire season worth while.

Dallas played in the NFC Championship on Jan. 21, 1996.

Jalen Hurts was born on Aug. 7, 1998. Young Mr Hurts
grew up, learned how to play football, went to college, squatted 600 lbs, graduated, got drafted by the Eagles, and made it to the NFC Championship all before Dallas has been back.

Wild that Dallas was so confident that Purdy would turn into a pumpkin when they are running Dak out there.

I guess I would have liked to see a little more from Purdy, but he had no run game until very late and very little pass protection. I can say without any uncertainty that Jimmy would have been a disaster under the same circumstances.

The offense was so shaky I have very little faith that they’ll be able to beat the Eagles in Philly, but it’s been a great run regardless of what happens next week.

Even though they’re only 2 point dogs, feels like everyone is writing them off… Hopefully nobody will be giving them any shot at all by the weekend.

This game against Dallas played out exactly as expected. This wasn’t going to be a shootout or blowout.

I had us beating Seattle by 17 and Dallas by 5. Niners play in such a way that getting blown out typically isn’t in the cards. Philly was the only team that worried me on the NFC side going into these playoffs. We’ve got to run the ball and play sound defense, both things we can do. Biggest worry is Hurts avoiding the rush and taking off. When that happens holding them to FGs instead of TDs will be crucial. Not sure of a prediction for this one yet. I will say Dallas was averaging 30+ pts per game this year coming into yesterday. All hope is not lost.

I have the same gut feeling as many. The 49ers will just not be able to keep up with Philly. Purdy has played amazing but he's a 7th round rookie going against one of the hottest qbs in the league with two of the top wrs on the outside. The D just isn't good enough to hold philly down.

Hate to say it, but I don't see us beating Philly
Why?

I'm not guaranteeing victory by any means, but they can definitely win this game and it wouldn't be a fluke.

-Excellent defense
-Very good running game
-Kittle, Deebo, Aiyuk, CMC are all big time playmakers

Philly offense will get theirs. Don't see the Niners holding them under 24 points, which means Shanahan will have to be more aggressive in the playcalling than he was yesterday. Would like to see more first down throws to Deebo and Kittle and let them set a physical tone early.

Going to be a fun game as a fan. Enjoy the moment

Last night was a DOG fight. It wasn't pretty but they got it done.

I'm gonna let last night sink in, enjoy today and then take a deeper look at Philly. I really don't know much about them other than their record and a few players they have. I don't know the last time I watched an Eagles game, I only watched a little bit of their game against the Giants, it was the one game this weekend I had zero interest in watching.

Anyway, where did the 49ers pass rush go? One sack last night late in the 4th, and for the second straight game, Bosa has been quiet. Drake Jackson being inactive again is really strange. He's had a few batted passes this season, not sure why Kyle doesn't keep him in the lineup. And Kinlaw has been invisible for the most part. Waiting for the D Line stats to see how many pressures we got on Dak. Maybe it's just Dallas' o-line, I don't know. But we need to get to the QB more.

That's all I got for now.

Phillys offensive line is probably the best in the league.

Purdy protecting the ball and having zero turnovers is so huge. I wonder how Jinmy would have fared against that nasty pass rush.

Most Playoff Wins, All Time:
1. Patriots, 37
2. 49ers, 36

49ers have the second-most playoff wins of all time and the most conference championship game appearances since 1980.

6 NFCCGs in the last 11 seasons.

CMC was dealing with a right calf issue last night...he says he will be good to go but its something to keep an eye on.

They put pressure on Dak without blitzing much. Only 1 sack, but Huffonga missed an easy one and Armstead absolutely should have had a sack and a safety. Think he was worried about getting a roughing the passer penalty, but still, really bad techniqe.

They held Dallas to 12 points. 12. Pretty damn good. Dak was 23/37 for 206 yards, 1 TD and 2 picks. Guess what they did worked pretty well.

As far as Kinlaw. Not standing out for sure, but I trust there is a reason that he's playing and Jackson isn't. Doubt DeMeco is that concerned about optics at this point.

I was about to post the same thing. Bosa has been a non factor for several weeks now (I’m sure because offenses are paying special attention to him). The D overall was great, obviously, but the disappearing pass rush is odd. And this week they’ll need to throttle back to make sure Hurts stays in the pocket.

That, and SF establishing the running game and not putting Purdy in a bunch of obvious passing situations against the Eagles pass rush, will be the keys for next week.

At some point Purdy is going to need to throw to the sidelines on long to medium routes. Dallas went all out to stop the screen game and the run and the 49ers didn't really have an answer.

I think for the last 4-5 weeks the oline and the dline has looked fairly pedestrian. We already know the DBs are kind of meh so if we give hurts a lot of time back there to throw they are going to put 40 up on the 49ers

Below are Pro Football Focus' five highest-graded 49ers players on offense against the Cowboys.

2 O-linemen and 3 D-linemen were the lowest graded players. Not good. This is Kinlaws second week in a row where he's in the LOWEST grade list. What a bust.

The sky is falling, the sky is falling. Not every player was elite! God, they're gonna get killed next week. They have no chance. Zero

You must be a blast to watch a game with.

It's nice to have an honest conversation about the team without the constant homerism. We are all fans just some of us don't have the blinders on. Neither is right or wrong so you do you but an honest assessment of that game against dallas (and the last 4-5 weeks) should concern people about where the oline and pass rush is at.

My daughter in SF says next weekend is gonna be 🌶️🌶️. The town is super-excited about the team. She's consulting with her foodie sister in LA about recipes for guac and other vegan goodies to go along with wings and other things.

The pass rush was fine yesterday. They put pressure on Dak pretty much all game with a 4 man rush for the most part. The same guy that lit up TB last week with a 143 QBR got shut down and had a QBR of 63. It's not all about how many sacks they had. Bad tackling or they would have had 3-4 more, plus the hold on Bosa early prevented another one. Only 1 long pass play given up, mainly because Dak didn't have time to throw deep.

Some of you just whine about every stat. Not every game will be perfect. They won again and are moving onto the NFC championship game. Must not be too much wrong

Hard not to be excited. Well, except for a lot of those who post in this thread apparently

Pointing out flaws that are supposed to be strengths isn't whining or saying the sky is falling. It's concerning. I'm still confident in this team, but we have to clean some things up to beat Philly.

I suppose we should all be like "we're gonna roll the Eagles, we're the best! Puppies and rainbows and unicorns! Yay!"?

Cmon. This team isn't perfect and this is a football forum where we talk about our team, good or bad.

Oh, and if you were watching the game with me last night, you would've known the INTs were coming before they happened. I was dialed in. 😁

I don't think it's whining it's a thoughtful analysis

dallas gave up 5 QB hurries on 40 drop backs
49ers gave up 9 on 30 drop backs

In a game with the two players vying for DPOY in Nick Bosa (2 tkls, 1 TFL, 1 QB hit) and Micah Parsons (4 tkls, 1 PD, 1 QB hit)…

Fred Warner outshone them both

9 tackles, 7 solo, 1 TFL, 1 INT, and 1 PD—the most incredible play of the game (covering Lamb)

Take a bow, Fred Warner.

Fred Warner has never been better than yesterday. No better way to build a 49ers legend resume than through jaw-dropping playoff performances vs Dallas. Warner roared in all phases — early run blitz vs Pollard to the mind-blowing downfield coverage of CeeDee Lamb

I don't see a single person here (and haven't) saying the 49ers will roll anybody or will roll to the title. I'm quite aware this team isn't perfect, which is why I don't get spun about somebody not playing great in one game or having a low PFF score. The guys on the other team are pretty good too. I do get spun about stupid shiot, like letting Dak escape on what should have been an easy tackle for a sack or Mitchell running out of bounds when he should have known where the markers were and gotten down after he got the first down. Even Ray Ray fumbling the kickoff after I specifically yelled at the TV, telling him not to fumble. Totally unacceptable

Hmmmmmm. I must have seen a different game than the PFF guys. 49ers had more than 5 QB hurries. Dak was very uncomfortable all game.

I was being facetious with the rolling the Eagles comment.

Bottom line, we're on the same page here. Let's enjoy the ride and hope we can find a way to win next week

Ha

That's kind of my point. Have fun and enjoy the ride. Been a fun year and when you consider the team is on their 3rd QB, who by the way, was the absolutely last player picked in the NFL draft, makes it even more memorable. Now, they need to just finish it off :shades:

Injury update:

Charles Omenihu suffered an oblique strain that forced the defensive end to briefly exit the game. Shanahan says Omenihu is day-to-day leading to Sunday's NFC Championship Game against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Running back Christian McCaffrey revealed that he fought through some bothersome calf discomfort against the Cowboys.

"I was fighting but made it through; made it through great," McCaffrey told reporters.

Said Shanahan: "Christian McCaffrey, calf contusion. Day-to-day."

The newcomer to the injury list in Elijah Mitchell. Shanahan said the second-year running back suffered a groin injury. He is also day-to-day. The coach was asked if there is any level of concern regarding McCaffrey and Mitchell's availability this weekend.

"No," Shanahan responded. "We're expecting to get them all back for Sunday, but we'll see how it goes through the week for practice and everything. Hopefully, it will go well, and that will get them ready for Sunday."

I think food and drinks and being with people are her priorities. But a win by SF would ensure an even bigger Super Bowl party. Some of her friends are 1st generation football fans, this being SF.

Lol, page 35 of this thread is interesting. A few of us were wondering if Shanahan should be on the hot seat, a few didn't think the CMC trade was good/necessary....

At the time we were 3-4. It wasn't pretty. And then we won 12 in a row.

it’s pretty amazing how fortuitously *everything* has worked out since that point - the last pick in the draft even stepped in and looks like their best QB in a decade. Like the top percentile of all possible outcomes.

We really need more production in the Sack department other than Bosa.

49ers have 48 total sacks (incl playoffs)
 Sack leaders:

Bosa: 18.5
Ebukam: 5
Omenihu: 4.5
Jackson: 3 (healthy scratch 4 of last 5 weeks)
Willis, Warner, Givens, Hufanga: 2
Hyder, Ridgeway, Flanigan-Fowles: 1
Lenoir, Gipson, Burks: 0.5

Eagles have 75 total sacks (incl playoffs) and have FOUR players with double digit sacks. That's sick.
Sack leaders:

Reddick: 16
Graham: 11
Hargrave:11
Sweat: 11
Cox: 7
Williams: 4
Edwards: 2

I'll be the first to admit I didn't think the cmc trade was a good one. Watching him now he still isn't that dynamic of a runner but he is just so football smart. Hard to put a price on that. Plus he falls forward which is always good.

I'm fascinated by the people who think the most Brock Purdy should be given is just the chance to compete for the job next year.

No, I don't think Purdy is Tom Brady.

And we remember Brady differently as he went on to win the Super Bowl that first year. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tom_Brady

But was everyone acting in the 2nd round of the playoffs like he was still a scrub?
All I talked about leading into his 2nd round game was that he didn’t really win the 1st game, and that the refs / NFL were crooked. That’s still my only reaction to that season.
The Tuck rule was the beginning of the end of the NFL for me. I have never looked at the NFL the same and doubt all games are officiated fairly. Feels like officials are trying to determine the outcome of many games. I used to live for the NFL watching every game possible on TV and attending at least 2 games every season. I have been to one live game in the last 20 years and will never go to another game. I watch a few minutes of the NFL most weeks and really don’t care about it. I know there are playoff games going on now but when I’m finished with my workout on the bike I will play guitar. Watching the NFL is doubtful today.

When Jimmy G got hurt I thought we were screwed, and it just highlighted what a debacle the Lance trade was. Purdy stepping forward has not only saved this whole season, it's saved my hope for the team moving forward. I think at this point I am fine with the CMC trade because he's such a dynamic record. And if Purdy is a solid starter next year, it kind of makes the Lance trade moot since "we got our guy." But if we'd gone 6-11 and missed the playoffs the CMC trade would have compounded everything and made me even more despondent than I was when Jimmy went down.
