San Francisco 49ers - link to new 2023 thread in latest post (1 Viewer)

Drake Jackson stock rising? So pumped to see him paired with Bosa.

Nick Wagoner on Twitter:

#49ers rookie DE Drake Jackson getting strong reviews from teammates already:

"He's super talented, he does things out there I definitely couldn't do as a rookie." - Bosa

"Damn. He's good. He's going to be a key factor in this defense." - Ebukam

Bosa watched the #49ers' first 2 picks and didn't know much about Jackson. He was confused when the broadcast listed him as a linebacker. Then saw highlights: "I was like all right, I see why we did that. It's pretty crazy somebody that talented was still there at that point."

Trey Lance in the four practices the media attended this offseason:

50-67 completions (74.6%)
6 TD passes
2 interceptions

Tartt signs one year deal.woth Eagles.

SF will now pair Talanoa Hufanga, Tarvarius Moore or George Odum with Jimmy Ward.

Tuesday was the day that the San Francisco 49ers reported to training camp, and it's been confirmed that star wide receiver Deebo Samuel has reported to training camp this morning, per NFL reporter Doug Kyed.

The good and not so good from day one

https://www.si.com/nfl/49ers/news/the-good-and-not-so-good-from-day-1-of-49ers-training-camp-the-trey-lance-era-begins

The article was written by Grant Cohn, so take his opinions with a grain of salt, but it's a decent recap.

7. Wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk.

Caught a team-high four passes. Three of his catches came while playing with the second-team offense. His only catch with the starters was a five-yard gain. He could not get open when facing Moseley or Ward, but he repeatedly beat Thomas.

Is the impression Aiyuk was running with both 1s and 2s?  The other blurb you posted listed him as a starter.  "Could not get open when facing Mosley or Ward" sounds bad.

Arik Armstead out "a few weeks" with MCL sprain.

He's played in 71 of 71 possible games for SF over the past 4 seasons, and this shouldn't threaten that streak with opener still 6 weeks away.

I read that after 2 practices, Aaron Banks has been the best OL so far.

Trent Williams had been missing due to the birth of his child, but hes at the facility today.

The 49ers officially have a frontrunner in their battle for the starting strong safety job. Although through a couple days of training camp it hasn’t been much of a competition. Second-year safety Talanoa Hufanga has been getting the first-team strong safety reps and acquitting himself well in that role.

Hufanga figured to be in a battle with veteran defensive back Tarvarius Moore, a converted free safety who missed all of last year with an Achilles tear he sustained in OTAs. Perhaps the team is just easing him back in from the Achilles tear, but defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans made it sound as though Hufanga is putting a stranglehold on the job.

“Yeah, Huf is doing a great job,” Ryans told reporters Thursday in a press conference. “He’s being more vocal, which is what I asked of him. Be more vocal, be more in that leadership role. At the safety position, we ask a lot of those guys. We ask them to communicate a lot, so Huf, he’s picking that up and he’s doing a much better job of it. And he’s always been a playmaker and an exciting guy to watch, so he’s doing that and communicating. So he’s headed in the right direction for us.”

Defensive lineman Maurice Hurst tore a bicep in practice, he's gone for the year. Dude's made of glass.

More reps in camp for the young/new guys.

Word from camp is the 49ers secondary looks amazing, with 10 INTs in 4 practices.

A tale of two training camps for the 49ers' secondary...

2021: 11 INTs in 15 practices
2022: 10 INTs in 4 practices

This defense is gonna be fun to watch!

As for the INT rate (cumulative) between training camps:

2021: 2.3%
2022: 8.7%

----------
Subdivides into...

Lance: 6.3%
Sudfeld: 11.6%
Purdy: 8.3%

Pads aren't on yet and the defense is still way ahead of the offense. Let's see when the pads are on.

In what can only be described as a huge vote of confidence for 49ers rookie cornerback Sam Womack, the club on Monday released a veteran player who had been lining up as the team's top nickel back.I

The 49ers announced veteran cornerback Darqueze Dennard was among the team's cuts in order to get to the 85-player limit.

Womack, a fifth-round pick from Toledo who had two interceptions in the 49ers' preseason opener against the Green Bay Packers, appears to be the current top choice to replace K'Waun Williams at nickel back. Williams signed this offseason with the Denver Broncos.

“For Womack, those are plays you saw him make in college," 49ers defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans said. "Like he was always sticky in coverage, contesting the throws, a lot of PBUs, a lot of interceptions in college.

"So I've seen him make those plays, seen him make those plays in the game as well, seen him make those plays in practice, so it wasn't a surprise that he was sticky in coverage."

49ers season INT total (camp + preseason + season)

2021: 23
2022: 24*

*At least 18 games still remaining
Pretty hard not to be excited about the defense this year. Having a true shut-down corner in Ward will make a world of difference. Mosely a nice #2 CB and Womack looks like another 5th round gem. If Verett is able to play to 2020 levels even midway into the season, that secondary will be tough. Get well Jimmy Ward

More like 41-10

Niners will roll them. Their offense is going to be so much better this year with Shanahan being able to utilize the whole field having a QB who can throw to the sidelines and deep. Gonna be fun to watch.

Idk about that. I really like the Bears to cover and possibly win.

Most starters playing tonight. Game is being shown on Amazon Prime.

I hope Lance plays the whole first half but I doubt he will.

Lots of players to watch, especially the O-line, DBs and RBs. D line should be disruptive as hell.

Edit: no Bosa, Warner, or Williams tonight

I'm very frustrated with the offensive line situation. You didn't need to be an NFL insider to see that the interior spots were going to be a massive problem this season, and RT figures to be equally a disaster if McGlinchey is not going to play (and it doesn't look good).

OL was awful, but I'm actually not worried about it yet. They want Burford to be the starting RG obviously, but if they decide he's not ready, Brunskill can move back in and he's a solid enough player there. I think they have rolled with Burford knowing Brunskill doesn't need the reps. I thought Banks looked fine and Williams being back in next to him will help.

Wish they had signed Tretter, but he is still available as a FA and shouldn't take much time to get up to speed if they decide Brendel isn't a starting quality center.

RT worries me too. But a couple weeks for Kyle to figure it out if McGlinchey isn't ready to start the season. Also helps that their first two games are on the softball side of the schedule.

Outlook for Elijah Mitchell this season with the mess you all describe along the OL? This has been a strength for SF for many years, guess time is catching up and some departures in the off season?

I'm bullish on Mitchell but would like to hear what some of you all think.

Eh, Brunskill has rated as solidly below average at RG the last couple years. Burford might be their second best offensive lineman anyway. According to Kawakami and Barrows, Banks has been getting wrecked in practice and was bad again last night. Tretter just retired - maybe he can be lured back if the need is bad enough, but who knows what kind of shape he’d be in.

Easy to say in retrospect perhaps, but they really should have cut Jimmy right away and used the cap space over the summer to keep Tomlinson and upgrade one of the other OL spots.

Several of the guys we are talking about are probably average or above run blockers. It is pass protection where this unit has gotten shredded over the last couple years and looks worse this year.

And TL seems oblivious to the rush coming from the blind side. Definitely concerned.

So the Eagles released Jaquaski Tartt.

Jimmy Ward will miss at least the first few games, and I've seen reports that say he could be out longer.

49ers now have the 5th MOST cap space after the Jimmy G restructure.

Could we see a Tartt - 49er reunion? He would be plug and play and would come cheap.

Shanahan on the thought process in the past couple of days:

"Oh my god, Jimmy Garoppolo is available as a backup quarterback for us. And that makes sense for him and makes sense for us. What else is there to think about?"

He also said that Trey was great in receiving the news. He said that Trey actually likes having Jimmy in the building and that they have a very strong relationship.

49ers and QB Jimmy Garoppolo pulled a win-win out of a lose-lose situation

The 49ers won by clearing nearly $20 million in cap space while simultaneously strengthening their position in the quarterback room. This is not a hedge against Trey Lance as a starter, it's a hedge against Nate Sudfeld and Brock Purdy needing to take meaningful snaps if Lance were to miss time due to injury. Now the team has a backup QB that they know they can win games with.

Jimmy Garoppolo won because he is now guaranteed a shade under $9 million for the season, and as the backup quarterback on a talented roster, he is poised to cash in as a free agent in 2023, just like Mitchell Trubisky did this past offseason after spending the 2021 season in Buffalo as Josh Allen's backup.

Final cuts:

The San Francisco 49ers announced the following roster moves:

The following players have been released:
  • TE Troy Fumagalli
  • S Tashaun Gipson Sr.
  • CB Dontae Johnson
  • WR Marcus Johnson
  • TE Tyler Kroft
  • OL Jordan Mills
  • WR Willie Snead IV
  • DL Akeem Spence
  • QB Nate Sudfeld
  • DL Kemoko Turay
  • WR Malik Turner
  • DL Jordan Willis
The following players have been waived:
  • DL Kevin Atkins
  • DL Alex Barrett
  • CB Tariq Castro-Fields
  • OL Alfredo Gutierrez
  • RB JaMycal Hasty
  • S Tayler Hawkins
  • CB Qwuantrezz Knight
  • WR Tay Martin
  • LB Marcelino McCrary-Ball
  • LB Segun Olubi
  • OL Jason Poe
  • OL Justin Skule
  • OL Keaton Sutherland

The Jaguars claimed RB JaMycal Hasty off waivers, and Washington claimed our 6th rounder CB Tariq Castro-Fields.

We claimed former Browns OL Blake Hance, who started 8 games for them last season. He's a good run blocker and below avg pass blocker.

Willis will prob be on the practice squad.

With Blake Hance coming, someone who made the initial 53-man roster has to go to make room.

That player would be eligible to be claimed off waivers or, if he’s a veteran, signed by another team. No word on the identity of that player yet.
