*** San Francisco 49ers *** Official thread (33 Viewers)

I feel like they needed a game like this as a wake up call. It's possible for as focused as this team usually is, they may have got a bit complacent. I don't know if that's true, but I know this: there is zero chance they're complacent now.

Yeah it was getting annoying hearing talking heads on TV start to say things like "could the Niners go undefeated?" and whatnot. The goal is the Super Bowl. They don't need the added pressure of trying to maintain a lengthy winning streak, or people talking about how long before Purdy loses a game, etc. Tough loss (and they can come away knowing it was a game they easily could have won if any one of a few things had gone differently), move on to next week, keep your eyes on the prize.

This year's Niners team is maybe the first time I remember feeling the same excitement as I did about the 1994 team when I was a teenager. That '94 team got blown out by the Eagles in week 5 of that season to drop to a 3-2 record. They were practically unstoppable after that. So the loss yesterday was a bummer but one loss in October does absolutely nothing to hurt their Super Bowl chances (especially with the Eagles loss) and as you said, may actually help them in the grand scheme of things. They're still the best team in the NFL.

I almost added this in my post. I remember it well. They beat us 40-8, Seifert pulled Steve Young, and Young wasn't happy about it. The only game we lost after that was the last game of the season when we had home field wrapped up.

Let's hope history repeats itself.

For all the talk about the offense looking bad, the defense was just as bad.

Per Akash:

The 49ers' defense missed 10 tackles on Sunday vs. Browns, per PFF.

That's more missed tackles than their three previous games combined (9).

What did that lead to? Browns had 106 of their 160 rushing yards after contact.

Oof
Yep. If they hadn’t been playing a mostly talentless and inept offense that game wouldn’t have been close with the way the defense was playing.

49ers defensive pressures at CLE, PFF

Oren Burks: 4
Clelin Ferrell: 3
Randy Gregory: 3
Drake Jackson: 2
Nick Bosa: 2
Javon Hargrave: 1
Javon Kinlaw: 1
Talanoa Hufanga: 1
Arik Armstead: 1
Isaiah Oliver: 1

I know Bosa’s pressure rate has been outstanding but it sure would be nice if that starts turning into more actual sacks. The one he had yesterday was sort of a cheap one in that the OL miscommunicated and he was unblocked.

I think the addition of Gregory is gonna help, he looked great yesterday. He ended up with a sack, 2 tackles for loss and 3 pressures while only playing on a third of the pass rush snaps.

The lack of sacks overall is worrisome, but teams are neutralizing the pass rush with scheme/quick passes. I think the sacks will come though.

Per Akash:

49ers' rushing defense:

#16 in yards per carry allowed
#20 in rushing success rate allowed
#22 in rushing EPA per play allowed

an area that's a concern and was magnified with the loss of Dre Greenlaw on Sunday. not sure what the fix is, but something DET/PHI can exploit.

I don't know how reliable this data is, but pretty wild stuff regarding Moody's miss at the end of the game.

Link (with nifty graphic)

Last kick of the 49ers-Browns game:

Initial kick was headed 0.44 yards from the goal post center.

The spin took it rightwards an additional 0.82 yards.

The wind pushed it 2.39 yards further right, for a total of 3.64 yards from the center of the goalposts, resulting in a missed FG.

Science, beyotch!

Edit: Shanahan should have tried to get a few yards closer for his rookie kicker, especially given how the game was going.

The real story...

Deebo and CJ Gardner Johnson getting into it on Twitter:

CJGJ Tweeted : U see Deeboo Run Typical WR behavior … THEN ACT HARD WHEN TRENT SAVE HIM 😂😂

Deebos Response (with video of CJGJ getting his chain snatched)
Boy stop playing before you get a rewind of this….. boy sit down 🙂

CJGJ: Trent can’t save you when u see me … ON AND OFF THE FIELD ! Carry on 🥱🥱

Deebo: This is comedy. Catch me off the field cause you barely on the field or boucing round on different teams 😂😂

Lol

Nothing shocking about this loss. Disappointing for sure to lose on a somewhat chip shot field goal, but figured they would lose 3-4 regular season games and 1-2 would be games they weren't expected to lose. The nature of the game. Last year they lost to Chicago, Denver and Atlanta. Happens

I remember that game well. And actually thought about it yesterday also, both when seeing SF loss and later watching the Eagles lose. Sf and Philly still look like the best two teams in the NFL to me too, with SF a half step ahead with an easier schedule. Niners are still in good shape unless the injury news today is bad

Don't sleep on the Lions. They're the 2nd best team in the NFC and the only team that would worry me if we saw them in the playoffs (assuming both teams are healthy of course)

Maiocco:

49ers injury updates from Kyle Shanahan:

Christian McCaffrey: Is undergoing imaging now to determine what's up with ribs/oblique.

Deebo Samuel: He's day to day with a shoulder injury.

Trent Williams: It's NOT a high ankle. He's day to day, too.

Niners Nation:

Deebo Samuel is day to day with a shoulder injury. 49ers HC Kyle Shanahan said that Deebo hurt himself on the first play of the game, and the team could tell he was hurting over the next 8 plays. That forced the team to shut him down.

Y’all just stay healthy bc I don’t want to hear excuses come January.

I don’t think Detroit is on the same level as SF or Philly just yet. But we’re literally getting better by the week. You are where we want to go.

Maybe stop using him as a RB. He's been banged up so using him as an RB doesn't seem prudent

Deebo helps soften up the front 7 with carries, it's part of their identity. I don't know if the injury factor goes up for him with carries vs catches, but he runs the same when he's a WR, he's always looking to punish defenders.

I really think Kyle needs to have a bigger RB split between CMC and the other RBs. I'd like to see CMC get arounf 20 touches a game and let the other guys get work. Mason is a wrecking ball who also punishes tacklers, and Mitchell we know is pretty good when healthy.

Protect the precious cargo. CMC is the straw that stirs the drink.

Disagree. As a RB, he takes more hits from bigger lineman and LBs. He can truck most DBs.

Agree with reducing CMCs workload, especially in games where they have big leads.

Hurts will always scare me; Goff doesn’t. The Niners are custom built to stop QBs like Goff and struggle a lot with mobile QBs.

Hurts has regressed, he looks like a shell of what he was last season. Other than their pass rush, the Eagles defense is average. Detroit has a swagger and Goff looks like a different QB we saw when he was a Ram. He's playing with a ton of confidence. Hurts, not so much. Of course there's a lot of season left, but right now I think the Lions are a better team than Philly.

We will have to wait and see how everything shakes put, but the Lions are definitely a team to be reckoned with IMO.

Agree with so very many of your takes. Almost 💯 of your Niners opinions for sure. This Philly take tho,
I think is premature at best and haterade at worst. Hurts will be fine. I just traded significant assets for your (and now my) boy Purdy, so please don't accuse me of hating on the Niners here. I admire all the good teams. For now, 3-some between 9ers, Iggs and Motown. Things change fast, though. Cowboys still lurking and Seahawks and Rams are dark horsing in orbital pattern. And that's just the NFC.

Ahh, but that's why I put the caveat at the end "right now". The Eagles could very well be in our way again and it would be a tough game. Their schedule coming up is brutal and they've been banged up a bit, so it's not gonna get easier for them.

Agree on the Rams and even Seahawks to an extent, but Seattle doesn't scare me a bit. Cowboys wouldn't be a blowout again but Dak will always be Dak IMO. Does the NFC South even have a frontrunner? 3 horse race over there. 😆

Would love to see Kittle more involved. Got the best TE in the NFC and he's an afterthought a lot of the time.

I'm a little concerned that Deebo is on injury #3 in 6 games.

I really hope they sit CMC this week. I know the guy wants to play if he can, but no way he's 100 percent and anything less, he should sit it out. Mason and Mitchell can carry the load this week.

Yeah. As much as I like Kyle as a coach and play caller, I just don't why Kittle is completely ignored at times. I get that they have a lot of weapons, but he is one of them too. Perplexing.

Especially last week with Deebo and CMC out.

Saw some interesting facts about the 1981 49ers and 2023 49ers.

Could history repeat itself??

19812023
Young QB in 1st full season as starter after starting 8 games in previous season(s)Joe MontanaBrock Purdy
Traded for AFC West pass rusher a few days before playing DallasFred Dean

Randy Gregory Broncos
Blowout win over Dallas, scoring more than 40 pointswon
45-14

42-10
Lost to Cleveland in bad weather while scoring less than 20 pointsLost
15-12
Lost
19-17

Joe Montana would rather forget the Cleveland game. He threw 2 interceptions and was called for intentional grounding in the end zone, resulting in a safety.

The 49ers went on to win the Super Bowl that season.

Niners Nation:

49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan says that Christian McCaffrey's MRI results were encouraging. It's just an oblique injury for McCaffrey, not a rib injury. He's day-to-day.

McCaffrey won't practice today. Neither will Deebo Samuel, Trent Williams, Dre Greenlaw, or Aaron Banks.

Barrows:

Shanahan was dodgy on the diagnosis, but it's notable that ribs are no longer part of Christian McCaffrey's injury designation. It seems to signal that he has a chance to play Monday in Minnesota.

He said Elijah Mitchell (knee) is full go this week.

Barrows:

The following won’t practice today:

- Christian McCaffrey (oblique)
- Deebo Samuel (shoulder)
- Trent Williams (ankle)
- Dre Greenlaw (hamstring)

They are all day to day, per Kyle Shanahan

* Aaron Banks (ankle) also not practicing, and Isaiah Oliver (knee) is limited.

The league can never have too many good role models. This kid is one.

Humble 49er QB Brock Purdy unconcerned about money, spotlight.

Purdy's salary is tethered to his draft position, being the final pick in last year's draft. That means his paychecks take up only a small fraction of the 49ers' salary cap. He's on a rookie deal that cannot be touched until after the 2024 season, per CBA rules. Despite growing recognition, Purdy still lives with a roommate, splitting the rent with a teammate.

The quarterback is unconcerned with money or the fame that often accompanies athletes in his position. He's happy right where he is.

"I'm playing in the NFL, on a great team, and some people want to make it a big deal, like, 'Oh, you should be getting paid this,'" Purdy said. "And I don't care about any of that. We're having fun with where we're at, and I'm appreciative of just everything."

How does Purdy manage the attention of being part of the exclusive group of NFL starting quarterbacks, a role only available to 32 individuals worldwide at any given moment?

"For me, I just try to keep it simple, man," Purdy told Eisen. "I just got to remember I'm human. I'm the same son, brother, fiance. I have a fiance now, but I just keep those things in mind, man. I don't try to think that I'm somebody else or something bigger, and so that's just how I go about my life."

Eisen finds Purdy's composure in his current situation fascinating. He was curious about what sets the 23-year-old quarterback apart, enabling him to remain unfazed by it all. The second-year quarterback has never hesitated to share that answer and did so again during the conversation.

"If we're being real, man, my faith," Purdy responded. "It allows me to realize I'm a part of something that's not about me. My whole life and stuff, trying to think this is all about me, this is my story. I don't think like that. I just want to help this team win. I want to help love on these guys here and tell them about Jesus and God and having a purpose in your life. That's where I'm at. That's how I think mentally."

"All the other stuff that comes about—obviously, you've got legends and people that you grew up watching that you're able to now talk to and stuff, but, man, they're human, too. I'm human. We're not these gods or anything crazy. So, I don't know; I just try to keep it simple. I'm living life, I'm playing football, and I get to get paid doing this job, and it's a blessing."

Purdy's critics came out in full force following Sunday's defeat, stating the young quarterback had been exposed by the Browns defense, downplaying his prior success. Purdy doesn't let that narrative deter him. In fact, it doesn't sound like he's giving it much thought at all.

"I would just say I don't really care, in a sense," Purdy said. "I just want to win. I want to help this team win. People can say what they want. That's cool. I just want to help this team win and reach our goals. And then we'll see at the end of all this if that's true or not."

Should we rest CMC and/or Deebo Monday night?

Sports Illustrated reporter Albert Breer wonders whether it might be prudent for the 49ers to rest their injured players against the Vikings. His reasoning has more to do with the venue where they will play.

U.S. Bank Stadium boasts a slit film turf, a type of surface that, according to data from the NFL and NFLPA, has produced a higher rate of non-contact lower extremity injuries compared to other types of turfs, per ESPN.

"There were six stadiums that had it last year," Breer told Eisen on Thursday. "Three of those stadiums switched out the turf—New Orleans, Detroit, and MetLife all switched out the turf. That means there are three left that have that surface. Minnesota is one of those three."

"Do they tap the brakes on some of their guys who are hurt here, knowing what that surface is?" Breer wonders. "And so, again, it's one of three surfaces left in the NFL. It's Indianapolis, Minneapolis, and Cincinnati that still have what's called the slit film turf.

Breer notes that the 49ers might want to look at the bigger picture. Odds are, they will be in the playoffs. While they aim for better seeding, the health of their players has to be a priority, especially given the setbacks they faced in the 2020 season due to playing on a similar surface at MetLife Stadium.

The Vikings are slated to replace their turf after this season. Nevertheless, the 49ers are set to play on it Monday night.

Per Lombardi:

49ers Friday practice:

-Christian McCaffrey doing work on the side field
-Dre Greenlaw back at practice
-Aaron Banks back at practice
-No Trent Williams at start of session
-No Deebo Samuel at start of session

Official unjury report will be released around 5pm EST.

CMC was practicing today and looked unbothered by his injury, per Matt Batrows.

no Deebo or Williams today

Tashaun Gipson, who was flagged for a controversial unnecessary roughness penalty against the Browns, was not fined by the NFL this week.
