Sardine and Tinned Fish Thread. (1 Viewer)

Finally got around to some Patagonia mussels. Wow. Absolutely delicious.

The Patagonia tinned fish products are the same as the clothing company. No idea how the sourcing works but the tinned fish seems to be generally well respected.

If the rest of their stuff is as good as the mussels, I get it.
love the commitment. :lmao:
I wonder if they ever thought of including a free tin of something inside the pocket of their jackets.
Maybe sewn in so you'd only try to get it out during a true survival situation.

Tried some Mina.
They are fantastic and would make a really good daily driver. It's hard to imagine a better $3 tin. Seems to have some decent in-store availability (Fresh Market, around here). Morrocan product. Chonky pilchard that's very similar to the Portugese and Spanish stuff.
Nuri is the gold standard, imo, but they are super, super rich. Mina isn't quite as good, but they are also right at half the calories, sodium, and fat.

Bela is probably the best overall daily driver, but Mina is a great option.

Finally got around to trying some Season. They are nice, but probably not my cup of tea. I like my skins and bones, so there's that, but I also found them a little bit tough. I like a nice firm deen, but these seem overdone to me.

If anybody is looking for some good, cheap mussels (who isn't, right?), Vigo is pretty solid.
It's a galician Spanish mussel in the escabeche sauce. I assume they save money by putting them in sunflower oil.

Pretty awesome, especially for $2.50-3.00 a tin. They aren't as good as Patagonia, but still really good. They are almost on par with something like Matiz, which can range from $7-12 per tin. Matiz might be just a tad firmer, and you get a little more consistency from mussel to mussel, but they are very similar products.

Canned meats
Canned fish
:x

why the hate?
I had a bad experience in a movie theater once with a fellow who tried to open a can of tuna "in oil" which has a much more pungent odor than just white tuna in spring water
Planet Terror/Death Proof in one of the fancy West Hollywood theaters back in 2007
He didn't get to eat the can or drink from his water bottle he brought from home, and he didn't get to watch the double feature either
The rest of us had a lovely time once he was escorted OUT
I wrote a lengthy game thread on it
Would be shocked you didn't see this back in the day

My post was an inside joke for anyone that remembers the tuna incident

I'm pretty confident that that idiot doesn't represent tinned fish nerds.

We most often eat our tinned fish over the sink in the middle of the night when everyone else is asleep.

I highly recommend Flower brand Moroccan spiced sardines

Word on the street is that they are "Budget Nuri" and I'd say that's pretty accurate.
They are absolutely delicious. Nice spice in the oil, and the only other sardine that I thought had a similar firmness to Nuri.

Nuri goes for $5-7 per tin, and the Flower are $3.50.

Got another rec for you fellas, because I care.

If you want a good daily driver, but are concerned sodium content, then Crown Prince Sardines in Water is an excellent choice (Ocean Prince seems to be the same product under a different label). I originally bought these for my dog and cats. I wanted to give them the benefits of the sardines, but without all the sodium. CP in water has 90mg of sodium. Just fish and water. Solid brands in olive oil have 300-500mg of sodium.

Tinned fish nerd in me expected this to be absolute dreck. But oh man, they are really good. Big, chonky Moroccan pilchards. Beautiful fish. Some nice bone action too. Sorry. I know that might sound weird. But once you fall in love with eating whole fish out of a can, you grow to love the bones. I'd still absolutely prefer them in a a good olive oil, but even in water, they are really, really good.

Anyway, there you go.
I've got a shipment of cod liver, octopus, cockles, and anchovies coming in, so there will be more rec's you didn't want coming in soon.
