Self Driving Cars (1 Viewer)

Just heard a story about this customer that got into a driverless car to go to the airport in Arizona. Car proceeded to drive in circles for about five minutes before tech support was able to fix the problem and got him to the airport on time.
Okay, but I'm sure we've all dealt with human cab drivers who didn't know their own city as well as they should have.

Yeah I've driven in Phoenix a bunch so I've seen and driven around these things quite a bit (took some initial getting used to where I would look over absent-mindedly at a car next to me and have to do a double take at no driver - my kids also get quite the kick out of them). I haven't seen them doing anything concerning.

Like you suggested, they probably won't be perfect, but the real measure is whether they will be better* than cabs/Uber and I strongly suspect they will be.

*In terms of efficiency, reliability, safety, etc.

Neil DeGrasse Tyson predicts all cars will be self-driving electric by 2050.

To clarify, These circles were in a parking lot, not around the city.

Quite the limb he went out on :ROFLMAO:

That would be about perfect timing for people in their 40s and 50s to stop driving. Maybe the kids not getting their licenses aren’t so crazy after all?

As someone who will never have a self driving car, I cant wait for them. Remember the time the self driving car road raged you? Me neither!

I also have a feeling it will create an us vs them bully mentality where aggressive driving will be more rampant against self driving cars.

This is a technology that I feel kind of bad about missing out on. The idea that I could hop into a car and tell it to drive me to a city 12 hours away and I just sit there and watch movies or read or watch the world go by in the meantime sounds extremely appealing, and I say that as somebody who enjoys driving.

So many people checking texts on phones etc and I see that on interstates in major cities at high speeds even. I can't wait for self driving cars, so many people aren't interested in driving today that even a system with faults will be safer.

I don’t think I like it. I was never a techno optimist and I’m still not. I want a manual override, which I doubt they’ll give us. I don’t want to be subject to twelve hours spent on trips inside of a potential death trap that I have no control over.

And in before anybody tells me how much safer I’ll be or how irrational that is. I can drive, ****ers. It’s you guys who can’t.

It's not that bad if you pay for the extra legroom.

I get what you’re saying, but I rarely fly. Like, almost never. Because I don’t want to be stuck inside a death trap for twelve hours.

Put it this way. I went to Boston from San Diego two years ago. I’ve filled my quota of flying for the next ten years. IK, I’m the king of singing “Homeward Bound” while we’re still packing to go to our original destination.

Do you fly on airplanes or ride in trains? Autopilot is like 90% of flying. I get that there is the human element to flying, but you personally have no control over it

In a better world, we would just have way more passenger trains that could get you to that city in far less than 12 hours

I have Tesla FSD. I've praised it a bit in the EV thread. Watching the world go by is how it works. Look at your phone, put a movie on, or in my case a game; and you get warnings that will eventually bring the car safely to a stop and disengage FSD. The cabin camera is watching you. It allows hands free mode, but still wants your eyes on the road. There's a workaround. Sunglasses. hah

Since getting the service in October it's taken me from my garage to destinations 2 hours away four times, 3 hours away three times, 6 hours away twice. I use it to go to the grocery store.

Can I add a gripe - I wish Tesla could program the self-driving algorithm to not cruise in the left lane. Maybe I'm wrong and it does, but lately on my drives, a disproportionate amount of the left-lane sitters clogging up traffic are Teslas. I assume they go out there and put auto-pilot on and just chill.

Personally I have too many questions about self-driving cars to buy in to them yet. Road conditions are a lot different than flying. So much stuff changes second-by-second. Does the car know if that white blob in the road is a rock it must avoid or a plastic bag it can safely drive over? Can they manage snow and rain? Stuff like that. I don't have any interest in ever owning a self-driving car anyway, it doesn't make sense. For the cost they should be fleet vehicles you subscribe to, not one you own outright. I'd rather be shuttled around in a $250,000 tram-like safety bubble at 50 mph max that has FLIR, near-field communication with other vehicles, cameras looking at every angle, and high-end computing rather than some $60,000 vehicle that can go 75 mph but only has regular video processing and is faking the rest of the data through "extrapolation".

Between sales taxes, the ever-growing cost of insurance, annual registration taxes, energy costs, and amortizing the cost of the vehicle itself over its usable lifetime, it would probably be cheaper for me to pay $2500 a year to subscribe to unlimited pickups from a fleet than buy one of my own anyway.

Yep, was about to say I Hippled, my bad.

My son has a FSD Tesla and I got to drive it over the holidays, holy **** I'm in. You can set it up to change lanes and be aggressive (of course I tried that) or just cruise but still take the most optimum route but it was freaken nice to cruise the highway in So Cal and not be on and off the pedals. We ended up cruising PCH from Newport to HB and I got to open it up a few times, damn those cars are fast and fun to drive.

This! I hate that we missed this by a generation. At least our kids and grandkids will get the benefits.

Got a long drive for vacation? Pile the family in the car at 11pm, everyone goes to sleep, arrive at your destination in the morning everyone nice and refreshed. Sounds awesome.

Better be a lot of leg room and/or seats that go fully prone for that to happen. I can't sleep on a plane and I don't think a typical car will be much different (especially loaded with people for a family road trip).

Eventually, cars will be redesigned as passenger vehicles.

Will you not have to plug these in/gas up mid trip

My brother replaced his 2015 Subaru WRX STi this year with a new FSD Tesla Model Y performance edition (dual motors, etc.) And, I should say, he bought this car because his STi had 200k miles on it, it needed another new engine (this would be the 3rd engine after the original was replaced by Subaru at 100k miles) and it needed a host of other things so he traded it in. Anyway, he's very happy with it. He was explaining it to me, I'm a car guy, I love cars, I love driving, etc. and as cool as it sounded, it just had absolutely no interest to me at all. I took his car for a drive and I have to admit, its insanely quick and it does a lot things amazingly well but I did not even try the FSD because, I don't know, I just wasn't interested in trying it but I really liked the car overall, very cool.

My sister wanted to get together over the holidays, she lives 2 hours away. My brother offered to drive and I'm glad he did because I would not have believed it if I didn't see it and experience it myself. We got in the car, he put the destination in and he let the car drive us from Indianapolis to Cincinnati. It was flawless. It did not left lane camp, it did not make any mistakes, it turns the turn signals on, it changes lanes, it moves over to let cars merge from the right or left, it's amazing.

On the way back he said "do you want to give it a try?" Of course! I've been the biggest EV/Tesla skeptic on the planet. I want my manual transmission, I like driving, etc. but as I've grown older, it's slowly dawned on me that my drive to work and back is a grind. It's not fun, it's not exciting, it's aggravating at best, at it's worst it's frustrating but it's NEVER fun nor enjoyable. I honestly believe that this car with this software drives better than 99% of the drivers on the road. Much like Rainman, I consider myself an excellent driver, but as good as I believe that I am, I believe this is better than I am most of the time.

The ONE ding I would give it is that it took an exit ramp about 5-7 mph faster than I felt it should have. And I should clarify that I have a sportscar, I like to drive like an idiot when no-one else is around in safe conditions, I always take ramps too fast (in the appropriate vehicle) but this felt too fast. I asked my brother, my wife and my son who were in the call and they all agreed that it took the offramp a bit too hot. Other than that, it was. . . well it blew my mind if I'm being totally honest. It's not good, not even great, it's quite spectacular.

I don't plan on buying one anytime soon but I think most people, especially people that don't like driving and that are horrible drivers should be driving one of these.

I was gushing about it like you in October when a big update hit and I got a free trial. I subscribed. 8K for life of the vehicle is the current price, but I had a 2k referral bonus from someone using my referral code to order a CyberTruck, so 6k. No regrets. I'm the youngest of 6 and all my sibs are like many in this thread who are never using it... until I take them for a ride. I explain it like this. You're aging, old people lose driving skills, they have two eyes that aren't as good as they used to be, their minds wander and they lose reaction time, they become complacent from decades behind the wheel, etc. My model Y has 8 cameras with super-human vision. They see at night, they zoom, they focus on things 100 feet away I can't see. They're powered by a dedicated computer with one job. It is a safer driver than any of us and it's regularly being improved. I want all of them to embrace it. My 72 year old bro has. He was a Vegas limo driver for a few years, but he recognized his fading driving skills, retired, and stopped driving except for when he had to. Now he has a model y too and he's going to visit old friends all over the country.

As someone who has made a career in software, there are certain areas which I refuse to be an early adopter on. Self-driving cars is near the top of the list

I love trains, but there is something inherently broken with our rail system. Prices are waaaay to high for whatever reason. If the prices dropped in half, I think we could have a day of reconing.

My :tinfoilhat: says the airline industry is actively working to hurt the rail industry. I have zero proof or facts except that riding a train is 100x easier and faster than flying and still so many do not do it.

Agree on the prices, but even more so is just how damn slow they are. Amtrak introduced a Chicago to Florida train. The Floridian! 47 hours long to get to Miami. Ridiculous

The future of self-driving taxis will certainly include use-specific models, so there will be cars set up with exercise equipment, movies and other entertainment, sleeping, work stations, party rides and likely others. The most eagerly-anticipated use is likely the self-driving sex-limo with the lights and mirror set up.

Yep. I had one in NY take me on an extra-long detour to LaGuardia. After the 2nd wild-a$$ turn I interrupted his diatribe about Palestine (he was pro-Hamas) to tell him “I lived here in NY and am here every other week, so I know this isn’t a direct route to LGA. Take the right path or you’ll get zero tip…..right now I’m taking off 25% each time you do this.”

Amazingly the trip got back on track fast and I got to LGA on time.

that riding a train is 100x easier and faster than flying
Faster?
This is prolly person dependant.

My main hub is Boston Logan. I live about 60 miles outside the airport. This means I need to leave 3hrs ahead of time to make sure I can make my flight (yes I missed a flight once leaving 2 hours early). So I have 3 hours of time before flight, then the flight, then getting off the flight (I never check backs unless vacation). Add in the propensity of delays, and I have had some very bad delays lately, I feel the overall time of flying is slower than trains. Yes, trains can be delayed, but in my experience it is far and fewer in between.

yeah - flight to florida 2 hours - train ride is like 24 hours

But I do agree i wish train was cheaper and more efficient
Sure, FL. But FL isnt the only destination. And BTW you need to take into account time to get to the airport, through TSA, and out of the airport.

We really need some badass east to west trains. If there could be a fast Texas (Austin please) train, I would be in heaven.

I’m notoriously bad with details of travel (like remembering my hotel room number or where I parked my car). Very possible it was EWR (which I hate with a passion).

I'm interested in the bullet train they are currently building between LA and Vegas. 186 mph, in about 2 hours you are there.
