Shanahan fears Hillis out a month (1 Viewer)

Cecil Lammey

coach Shanahan is concerned that Hillis could miss a month, Peyton says that he is fine and is walking around without a limp according to post game locker room reports.

It's tough to say at this point, but I believe that Peyton will be out for the Panthers game, but may return for the Bills game.

Again VERY early, so we shall see. :lmao:

why would you blame shanahan?I'll take the coaches word here. He's been around athletes dealing with injuries like this one at the professional level longer than Hillis has been alive. Also, I think it's good judgment to never believe an athlete when they tell you they are good to go.

Hills is a tough SOB. He played with broken traverse process (supporting bones around the spine) his freshman year at Arkansas. Would have been a season-ending injury for most players, but he was back in 2 weeks.

Do we have any idea who the Denver RB is for Hillis owners in a pinch? Just from NFL.com, it looked like Bell got most of the work yesterday.

The last time I remember this many RBs on a team go down was the hilarity that was The Dolphins in 2004 i believe (see my team name). Lost Ricky Williams, Travis Minor, Sammy Morris, traded for Lamar Gordon and lost him the week after they made the trade, started Leonard Henry!

the wildcard here is Selvin Young, who has been out with injury for many weeks. Tatum MAY be the first in line, but if Young is healthy he could be more effective than Bell, especially on passing downs.Fire up the Popemobile!I have been impressed with what I've seen from PJ Pope, and he was an all purpose RB at Bowling Green. It could end up being a 3 headed RBBC, or one of the guys could take the feature spot - at this time we just don't know. My money is on some sort of RBBC.

Marshall is quoted in the AP story that went out last night, and it seems like he's part of the "T-Speed" fan club:

Bell has at least one supporter in receiver Brandon Marshall, who caught two touchdown passes Sunday.

"We've got T-Speed back there," Marshall said. "Hillis has been doing a great job, and that's the only thing keeping Tatum on the sideline. He's a premier back in this league, and I'm excited to see what he's going to do."

Denver Broncos running back Peyton Hillis will miss the rest of the season with a strained right hamstring, ESPN senior NFL analyst Chris Mortensen is reporting. Hillis is expected to be placed on injured reserve Monday.

Hillis was hurt during the Broncos' 24-17 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday, finishing with eight rushes for 58 yards and catching one pass for 11 yards. Tatum Bell replaced Hillis.

Hillis is the sixth Broncos tailback to be injured this season. Michael Pittman, Anthony Aldridge, Andre Hall and Ryan Torain are already on injured reserve; Selvin Young has been bothered by a groin injury.
Id hold off on dropping him just yet. This sounds like speculation from Mort and hes been known to be wrong before.

Shanny presser in 10 minutes...

Lammey - do we dump him in dynasty due to the number of RB's there, or did you see enough to warrant hanging on?

If you've got the roster room, I'd hang on to him. Contrary to some, I do believe that Hillis has value in 2009. The Broncos will have Alridge back, so it could be some Hillis/Quick Six RBBC with Peyton getting the goalline work. Both could line up in the backfield at the same time. Pittman is gone, Hall is gone, Young may be gone. I don't see Bell sticking around or Pope or Boyd. But yes, Hillis should still be on your dynasty roster IMHO.

I would not put a lot of stock in any Denver RB right now...SHanny has the QB, WR1, WR2, TE, decent OL...maybe he will finally see that he simply needs to go out and get a real quality blue chip RB out of college. I kno it is not his style, but they did spend a 2nd on Portis way back when...maybe the light will finally turn on.

Young, Hillis, Hall, Pittman, TBell...add it all up and you got a nice little pile of squa-doosh.

I was thinking this earlier in the year, but with Shanny being as bull headed as they come I just don't think he spends a premium pick (and premium $$$ :) ) on a RB.Javon Ringer or some other 2nd round/2nd day back maybe, but a 1st rounder no. I don't even think they'll bring in a big name free agent. Most of the bucks and picks are going for defense. This team can "make do" with most any back. And people need to remember Anthony Alridge. He was getting a lot of love in training camp, and could develop into a Leon Washington type for the Broncos with Hillis playing the battering ram. If anything I believe Shanny goes after more big backs because Pittman will be gone and Torain is just so so IMHO. :lmao:

any chance Selvin comes back this week?
yes, he should be back this week and I expect the Broncos to ease him back into action. Tatum SHOULD get the start although at this point it's up in the air. If Young can be effective and stay healthy I see his role growing each week going into the playoffs.

Do you not think that those guys ran the ball pretty well this year? Denver is 5th in the NFL with 4.5 YPC. It seems like their biggest problems were staying healthy -- do you think a "blue chip RB out of college" would have less chance at getting hurt than those guys? Why would this be true?

Lammey is Tater worth a pickup against Carolina or is RB a bust for Denver now. I am hurting bad a RB as you see

Classic example of FF thinking clouding NFL judgment. Shanny's bevy of experience indicates he has absolutely no need to do as you suggest. Raiders fan?

Let me be the first to speculate on Darren Sproles going to the Broncos for medium FA $$$. Ideal fit as a 10-15 touch RB, thunder and lightning combo with Hillis. He tore up the Broncos earlier this year which tends to motivate teams to sign players.

Anthony Alridge is already on the roster and he is similar to Sproles. Not sure why Denver would give much money to a part-time RB when they have someone with a comparable skill set on the roster.

Carolina isn't overly stout against the run (ranks 18th) and maybe Bell can have some success against a team that has allowed 136 yards rushing per game over the last 4 weeks. Lets see how they look tonight against the Bucs.

I am just curious if you think they are going to go chuck and duck 08 the next few weeks

Yeah, I think they will - which is bad for Bell as a receiver. Perhaps Young gets the receptions and Tatum is mixed in on some sweeps/toss plays - and maybe gets a screen here or there.

Thanks for the info Lammey I guess the search continues  .

Yeah cause all these scrubs he finds to run the ball...those teams have won a lot of playoff games, eh?

:lmao: The running game hasn't been the issue since Portis left. How many playoff games did denver win while they had CP?

So the answer to my question is yes?

Has anyone other than Portis done anything after they leave Denver? Let's not pretend that Shanahan found gold in all these drafts...he simply finds guys he can plug in and plug a hole for awhile but no one has made a lasting impression. They need a RB that they can rely on in week 1 and the 1st round of the playoffs in the same season. How bout a RB that you know can pick up that 1 crucial yard to get you a 1st down, move the sticks, and help close out football games...who does Denver have to fit the bill?

To act like the Broncos don't need an upgrade at RB is just silly talk...it doesn't matter if Daffy Duck ran for 8 yds a pop this season, they need a real RB they can rely on.

If you think about it - it really tells you how outstanding the run blocking in Denver has been. Not to say there haven't been backs who had talent there - there have - but there have been some average backs who have succeeded there as well. With the host of RBs trotting through this year - especially rookies - who have had reasonable success, it really highlights how good that Oline is, IMO.Add in props for rookie Ryan Clady who has played all season and very well on the line. Hard position to step into, especially on a team who already has a good oline.

Since Portis has left town, Denver's rushing game has ranked 4th, 2nd, 8th, 9th, and then 15th this year, 6 RB's in. They haven't been struggling on the ground since then. When Portis was here, that 1 crucial yard wasn't much help in the playoffs either - a stout rushing game doesn't do you much good when you give up 4 and 5 TD passes to the opponent's QB. Champ Bailey (the guy they traded Portis for) did help that, and was the significant player leading the Broncos to a playoff victory, handing Tom Brady his first ever playoff loss.Look at Denvers needs now - the clear, without a doubt #1 need is a safety. Next, they need a middle LB. Nest, they need another safety, followed by DL, then maybe another safety just in case, another LB, and then a RB might make sense.

Never fear, Torrain will be back next year!
Torain was painfully average, even in training camp when he was healthy. I saw a few "wow" runs, but most of the time he wouldn't get much yardage between the tackles. Now he has had 2 major injuries in the last 2 years, it doesn't look good for him remaining in the lineup and off the injury report.I'm calling a Hillis/Alridge RBBC next year. The Broncos should get a back in the draft, maybe an UFA because this looks to be another deep RB class.
