So is anyone feeling comfortable rolling Vereen out in Week 1? I doubt many drafted him as an every-week starter, but for those of us with deep leagues and flex positions, he certainly is a possibility. If so, who are you benching for him? If not, who are you playing instead? On paper, the matchup is great with Buffalo, and Gronk likely out, but I think there is still a lot of uncertainty as to how he is going to be used in Belichick’s offense this year and to what extent. I’m nervous about plugging him in with such a limited preseason sample size. If the Pats get up early, they may just grind yards out with Ridley – I see Vereen being used more in a close game. For now, I am benching him for Ryan Matthews (bad matchup with Houston) but I may change my mind…

I drafted him to be an every week starter. 16 team league, 0.5 PPR, start 1Q/2R/2W/1T/1K/1D/1F. I opened the draft with Richardson, Julio Jones, Luck, Gronk, so by the time I drafted Vereen, 27 other RBs had been taken.
I'm really committed... besides Richardson and Vereen, I have only Andre Brown and Woodhead at RB. So I'll be starting Vereen every week barring injury.

I've seen Vereen go in drafts anywhere from round 4 to beginning of round 7..
He should put up quality numbers in week 1

I drafted Deangelo Williams and Vareen to be my RB2BC. Most weeks I will likely start Deangelo unless Vareen reallly gets involved early on in the season. This week, I am starting Vareen against the Bills. Their linebackers are awful and I expect Vareen to get quite a few catches at that 2nd level.

12 team league, I am tentatively starting Golden Tate as a flex over Vereen, but I can be easily swayed between now and Sunday. I think Tate is going to be the focal point of the Seattle passing game and I'm not sure how many touches to expect out of Vereen. In a way I expect them to be used in a similiar role, however.

I'm still hesitant. Right now I have a choice between Ingram and Vereen and the obvious wisdom would say Vereen but I'm not so sure. I feel there's a lot of hype surrounding the guy but not a lot of real information on how he will be used and how much. That scares me. I think I'll hold back for week 1 at least.

I take it Ridley was benched after the fumble and thats why Vereen got so many carries later? Either way, you cant ignore his yards per touch.

Very excited about the Carolina game.
Carolina's done a good job vs RBs - 27th in FFPA.
Standard scoring held Lynch to 5.2 in week 1, Peterson to 8.3, Gore to 10.3. Best games have been Spiller at 12.9 (16/103/0, 4/26/0) in week 2 and Stacy 14.7 in week 7.
But I don't know if they have faced a really good receiving threat out the backfield yet.

The delay means either
a. they don't plan to activate him; or
b. they will at the last possible minute on Monday just to play head games with the Panthers.
Both are possible; but the latter is more likely. Problem is with a Monday night game can you risk taking the 0 if he's sitting in your starting lineup and not activated? Odds of that are low, but how low is TBD. Main considerations IMO are that he's been practicing for several weeks and BB is a secretive game player of the nth degree.
ETA - if you have a bench spot and are high on Vereen but want to hedge this situation a bit, there's Jonathan Stewart sitting on many wires right now. He's good for 5-10+ in the same Monday game, which doesn't sound great, but it's a lot better than a doughnut if you are eager to start Vereen this week, despite the Monday night game and sketchy roster status.

Yeah I just don't see why he wouldn't play this week and play a full workload. He's been practicing like you said and it was a wrist injury, not a groin injury or something that could Flare up or warrant a reduced workload. Also, they have a real tough matchup and could really use him. Sounds like BB just be BB.

That's actually a good idea. I was thinking about starting Vereen but can't stand the thought of taking a 0. I do have Deangelo and Stewart on my bench. Was going to play Boykin in the Flex but the upside of Vereen is too good to pass up.

Anyone have the Ridley vs. Vereen situation this week? I'm a bit underwhelmed by Ridley's chances to make much hay against that CAR front, and the possibility that Brady might try to attack the defense with spread formations that make the LBs cover from sideline to sideline seems to play more to Vereen's skill-set. Because his absence wasn't due to a lower body injury, I would imagine his conditioning should be just fine for this week, so that doesn't seem to be any reason to limit his snaps at all.
I can envision a scenario in which Brady starts out in hurry-up type offensive sets early in the game to try to exploit CAR's weaker secondary and less experienced LBs (Chase Blackburn is already ruled out for the game); if early season successes (and subsequent trends with Bolden) play out, Vereen would see a ton of work early and could get not only decent rushing numbers (from draws, especially) but also good passing numbers (split out wide, in the slot, or in the screen game). This might mean another quiet 1st or 2nd quarter for Ridley, but we've seen slow starts pan out in the second half for Ridley's rushing production and scores.

Think I'll start him over RRice in td heavy league. He has a better chance to score in my opinion. Even if he doesn't play, it is worth the risk because Rice has only gotten me 7 points combined his last 4 games, which totally sucks. Doesn't look like the sucktitude will change this week. And CJohnson got some good points Thursday night.

(9:58 pm ET) As of Saturday night the Patriots had not activated running back Shane Vereen from the short-term injured reserve list, but according to a long-time Patriots beat reporter, it's coming soon. ESPN's Mike Reiss, who has been covering the Patriots for a while, posted on Twitter that he expects Vereen to play Monday at Carolina. The team travels to Charlotte on Sunday and could activate Vereen then. They would also have to activate him to the roster 90 minutes prior to game time on Monday for him to be officially active.

Not too pleased with BB, but we should know better to expect anything different than him pulling all our chains. I'm sure he's losing sleep over how we all feel though.
The open roster spot still has not been filled yet. And they have completed their practices for week 11. They are saving it for someone unless they are going to go into Monday Night Football with one less player on the active list than the Carolina Panthers.
Then again, it is BB and he could do that if he feels that he doesn't need an entire roster to beat the Panthers.

There is a comptetitive advantage to not activating a player from the IR early because they don`t have to list that player on the injury report. Opposing teams have no clue of the players level of participation because it doesn`t need to be reported.

I think it's pretty much a given based on the reports that Vereen will be activated prior to the game. They have up until 90 minutes before game time to do this. The real question is how much action is Vereen going to get in his first game back? Does New England have a history of easing guys back in or do they throw them back in without hesitation? I can't remember what Gronk's stats were or Amendola's role was when they returned.

Total shot in the dark... Vereen isn't nursing a hammy or coming off of anything structural in his legs/feet/etc-he's likely been able to keep up 100% on his conditioning. he's recovered from wrist surgery and has been practicing for two straight weeks.
Basically, as I see it, he should be 100% and for two weeks has been practicing a game plan that should focus on getting the ball out to its playmakers in short screens, because of the strength of the opposing defenses run stopping ability. BB knows this and this is just the kind of situation the he revels in.
Nothing would surprise me with this. I could see Vereen getting very minimal action to Ridley being a late scratch with vereen shouldering the load and everything in between. It's a risk to play him, but based on my assumptions above...gotta go with him.

Rappaport on NFL Network this morning said that barring some set back, Vereen will be active tomorrow, FWIW..

I'm trying to read the NE tea leaves (agree that we miss Yudkin a lot here!...where the hell did he go?!). I started Vereen with no alternatives. If I take a zero, I take a zero.
I made my decision because of a few reasons. I understand the competitive advantage of not having to activate him until close to game time. But that is only an advantage if you plan to use the player extensively, right? You don't want the other team to have access to info about how much he's practiced, how good he feels, etc., but if you don't plan to use the guy much, who would care?
Once Gronk was back, they used him extensively. I think they will do the same with Vereen, at least in his pass-catching, shared-time role. I expect fewer looks than in week one when Ridley fumbled, but I do think he will resume his full share of his role that we expected coming into the season. Even when Ridley was "benched" Vereen just saw 1 rushing attempt.
Like someone suggested earlier, without the rushing attempts Vereen is pretty much a ppr TE disguised as a rb (not saying that is a bad thing).

Yeah, I'm in non-PPR and really wanted to see Vereen get more carries since targets can be a little shaky from week to week. Seems like he will definitely create mismatches and get his looks though...but I was super optimistic when Ridley got pulled but he did not step into that role at all. Agree with SilentCoach, based on how he was used last night it's almost like he isn't a RB.

We would agree that Charles is a better rb than Vereen yes? Charles went into the game having caught 47 balls.
Charles v Denver: 16 for 78 rushing but more importantly, 2 for -6 yds receiving.
Vereen will do better because Brady is a better qb, but I would not have him ranked top 8 for the week, but I am not sure what a "low rank" is yet as I have not checked the rankings yet.
