Shanghai, China.....what to see? Do? Eat? (1 Viewer)

A family member is going there for work for a couple weeks. What in particular should be seen, eaten, done, etc.?

They asked a Chinese coworker about what to eat there and he said Pizza Hut. Haha

He isnt joking. Have you heard of the gutter oil problem over there?

People are taking oil from the sewers, cleaning it up and selling it to food vendors. Its very dangerous because it has inedible oils and all kinds of chemicals in it.

Pizza hut is probably the safest thing you can eat

There is a special Shanghai'ese dumpling with soup in it. In general find a good dumpling restaurant and go nuts.

The Maglev train is cool, I think

I liked the Bund at night and seeing the radio tower from there.

Gotta go to The Bund. Unbelievable skyline.

It's hard to describe names of the other places in English, but I'll work on it.

Don't be the guy who travels to China and has KFC or Pizza Hut. If you think its funny, take a picture.

Lots of good shopping there, depending on their interests from high quality custom made clothing to various knockoffs to jewelry to junk.

Agree re. the Bund at night. Amazing.

There's a huge bootleg market in one of the subway stations. I think it's near the science center or science museum or something. It's worth seeing even if you don't buy anything. Basically, all the designer stuff you could ever want, but knock-off (likely made in the same place as the real stuff). I got a ton of cufflinks and a nice Bali bag from there. Negotiate the #### out of things. If the stand you go to won't take your lowball offer, walk out, go 5 shops down, and try again. You can usually get stuff for easily 1/3 of what they start asking. I got some decent Tiffany knock-off cufflinks, and some pretty nice ties there too. They sell sunglasses, jackets, shirts, shoes, bags, scarves, most anything designer.

Some of the historic gardens are pretty cool too.
