Shark Pool Board Mock Draft - Version 1 (1 Viewer)

If Kalil goes before the Vikings pick, I think it would be wise to consider another trade down if possible. The possible upside of having so many positional holes to fill.

A few of my philosophies:

1. When your team sucks, you need to get great value. Teams that are contending can draft for need. Tampa definitely sucks.

2. Running back is very low on the totem pole of important real-life NFL positions.

3. Its a game of cat and mouse. Theres probably not a ton of trade interest in this pick because teams are assuming that I will reach to fill a need. Once I demonstrate that not to be true, teams will make offers imo.

I take the clear BPA and the SOD:

OT Matt Kalil, OT

From drafttek:

possibly the best tackle prospect since Orlando Pace in the 1997 NFL draft.
From WalterFootball:
Kalil is the best non-quarterback in this class
From Sports Illustrated:
Kalil didn't allow a sack at USC last season
From behindthesteelcurtain:
Matt Kalil is the only tackle in the draft without any flaws to his game
From fftoolbox:
The number one offensive line prospect is definitely Kalil
Thinking back to the 2011 NFL Draft and OT Tyron Smith, the reason he played right tackle for Southern Cal is because of this guy right here: Matt Kalil.
From Todd McShay:
Kalil is clearly the top offensive lineman in the board
From Mel Kiper:
Kalil is as good a prospect as we've seen at the left tackle position in a few years.
Worst case scenario: I don't get what I think is fair trade offer and have to play Penn or Kalil at RT.

Best case scenario: Vikings now panic and offer the farm for Kalil.

Most likely scenario: I can move Kalil to a team like the Dolphins, Panthers, Cardinals, Bears, etc. and still get a player that I might've considered taking at #5.

Isn't Kalil supposed to be a potential stud LT of the future? Why would you ever pick a RB with the 5th overall if there's a LT there who is head and shoulders above all other tackles in the draft.I'll be pretty shocked if Kalil drops to 6th overall in the real draft.
Because the idea is to make your team better.
Kalil won't make the Bucs better?
Not as much as Richardson would, no.
And you know that for a fact, how?

This is a similar (note I said similar, not same) situation as when the Cardinals took Levi Brown over Adrian Peterson. They needed a left tackle and had a pretty good RB in Edgerrin James that they'd just signed. That didn't work out so well.
This is absurdly results oriented thinking. "Remember when the Raiders needed a QB and Jamarcus Russell graded out #1. That didn't work out too well and is a similar situation to where the Colts find themselves."

The Bucs re-signed LT Donald Penn to a six-year, $43 million contract just last summer and he had a better season this year than he did the year before.

They would bypass Kalil in this scenario no matter how much "value" there is in the proposition.

I think TB made the right choice here. BPA and it happens to be at one of the most important positions in the NFL.
And one where they already have a good player that they paid a ton of money to.By this line of thinking, the Browns should have taken Kalil and moved Thomas to the right side because it was a good draft deal.

Oh, what the heck... Let's see what happens here.

Trade:

The Washington Redskins trade this year's #6 pick and next year's 1st rounder to the Vikings for the #3 pick.
Wow. Is that all you really think it will take for the 'Skins to move up? If so, I hope to Gibbs this happens.

wait until the draft is over and then tell me what you think, Kalil is on the trading block

1.06 - Reily Reiff, OT - Iowa

I'd still rather have Reiff and an extra first than Kalil alone.

Agree with this. Bucs wouldnt take Kalil. I could see Richardson before him but the pick would be the corner.

There are surprises in the draft every year. We may think this isn't a good "fit" based on needs but teams don't typically think that way. At the top of the draft you want the best possible talent for your dollar. You can argue that it would be Richardson but if you look at where teams are headed in 2012, you realize how low of value RB's really are.Detroit took Fairley last year even though they had Suh. NFL teams need 2 OT's on the field at the same time.

I think teams are going to look at Richardson as a special talent come draft day.

So they'd go CB 5th overall because it's a need and seems like a good fit, right? And with all the crap they've dealt with by that knucklehead Talib, they can't wait to get in line for a CB who just got busted with possession of pot only 3 months before the draft?

Why move Thomas instead of Kalil? Any QB could flourish if Thomas/Kalil were protecting him.

Why take a right tackle with the fifth pick in the draft?

I don't know Thomas's contract status, but if he's a FA any time soon, Kalil would move back.Or is it too difficult to move between RT and LT?

We have an offer on the table for Kalil and are going to move him within the next ~15 minutes if we don't get a better offer. Feel free to send any offer now.

feel free to PM any offers, will consider them all and will be very likely to take the best offer
I'd offer Chris Johnson for Kalil. Or 1.20 and next year's 1st. Kalil shouldn't have fallen this far.
Our offer on the table is considerably better than that imo.

Ooof....didnt know about the pot bust. Yeah thats bad.CB is a dire need for them though

Because he's the BPA, is by what I've read head and shoulders above the other OT's in this draft ceiling-wise, and OT is one of the most important positions in the NFL.

But the idea isn't to see if you can take the absolute best player every time you pick. The idea of the draft is to improve your team within the context of what you already have. There is no chance the Bucs would take another tackle when they already have a starter that they've paid starter money to. They just wouldn't.

Can't speak for the Bucs management, but I'll speculate their phones would be ringing off the hook for a trade.

I can agree with that, but that's a different argument.

Come on Andy, how can you be so obtuse?Explain to me the Detroit Lions 1st round choices in 2010 and 2011. Suh is being paid QB money right now.

BPA happens later in the first rd and later in the draft ALOT more than the early picks. Teams that are picking that high suck for many reasons. So you see need picks early, because its not like they are getting a bad player up that high

With the 7th pick in the Draft, Jacksonville takes

Kendall Wright WR Baylor

Rumors are that a couple teams have him as their #1 WR over Blackmon. I'm picking under the assumption that Jacksonville is one of these team, and feel in love with him after the combine. The ownership also wants to give Gabbert a chance to succeed. This seems like a big reach now, but after the combine things can change. Other pick would have been Quinton Couples.

Defensive tackles aren't offensive tackles and Fairley's contract at 13 is nothing like a 5.

Agree completely. Thankfully they picked up the phone Tampa Bay sends Matt Kalil to the Carolina Panthers .

Tampa receives

2012 1.9

2013 2nd rounder

Jonathan Stewart

Carolina receives

Matt Kalil

I felt that Williams skillset is better suited to the type of offense run by Newton. Carolina stuck gold last year with Newton and wants to do everything possible to protect him. Matt is requited with his brother Ryan.

I know offense really was not an issue with the 5th ranked offense of the Panthers. I was not in love with any D-line prospects at 1.9. Kirkpatrick was on the radar until the drug bust this week. So with Claiborne off the board, protecting Cam became priority #1.

I like it and think it has a big possibility of happening. The only thing against him is size. All the Jaguars' receivers are smurfs.

Wait. So now what are you going to do with Jordan Gross who is going into year four of a six year extension?

I can say the Buffalo Bills were looking at him possibly at #10.Also Carolina just got rapeddddd!!!

Fairley's contract is $9.88 million for 4 years. Patrick Peterson was the 5th pick overall and his contract is $18.42 over 4 years. Under the new CBA the differences are not all that massive anymore.
