I am thrilled that there will be a season three but I have no idea how they will plausibly write themselves out of the end of season 2. I fear it will be a serious

True, but he got what he was after, rigth? Moriarty dead? Thus when he pops out of the back of a foam line pickup and says "Ta-Da!" he faces (nearly) no consequences. Of course it would be in a flash-back. They won't pick right up where they left off. I don't think.

Why does Cumberbun remind me of that gal from American Horror Story? It's unsettling.
Unsettling, too, is the lack of arguing about books, spoilers, and whether books constitute spoilers in this thread.
Does Mad Sweeney watch this show? If not, he needs to catch up and read the books stat so he can jump into the "how will they write themselves out of this?" conversation.

They're working within canon. Sherlock has to fall "to his death" and somewhat implausibly make it out alive when it seems he should be dead. That's the Sherlock story. The interesting part will be how craftily the writers accomplish it.

Sherlock is not on BBC-America. US rights are with PBS. It'll be on in late January over 3 weeks into February.

Not sure its a problem - they show him at the end of the episode, so whatever shock value was there, was gone by the end of the episode.
Though I suppose what they showed could have been Moriarty in a Sherlock mask
Agreed - I give them credit for showing him at the end of the episode - cuz it's obvious they wouldn;t kill him

First episode is out. A bit sillier than previous episodes in parts, but loved it. So happy it's back. Brilliant job by Cumberbatch portraying Sherlock. Really nails the spirit of the character.
Wtf is the new villain? Can't place a name from the books. A bit sad Moriarty is gone but great start to season 3.

Title is Masterpiece Mystery (10:00 PM PST but check local/regional times), than I saw Sherlock, Season 3: The Empty Hearse, (2014) in the description/plot synopsis field. I initially set series record, but it also set to record a few episodes immediately prior called Masterpiece Classic (Downtown Abbey?), so I went back and cancelled series record, and just manually pre-recorded the 19th episode. My DVR scheduler doesn't go to the 26th yet, so sometime on the 19th or as we get closer, I'll try and add episodes 2 & 3 when they show up (episode 3 first week in February).

Agreed—the second episode is as close to a straight-up comedy as they've ever come close to attempting, and they pulled it off nicely.

Google glass was the most obvious answer for whatshisname, the next thought that occurred to me is a computer chip implanted in his head. In any case, I don't believe everything was stored in his memory.
