Should Rush Limbaugh be censored or taken off the air? (1 Viewer)

The real analogy is everyone else should be taken off the air for yelling fire in a theater.  It is not Rush who is causing the panic, but everyone else.

Look, there are 60,000,000 deaths every year..

by far most are from Cardiovascular disease which kills about 18,000,000 each year.

Cancer comes in at number two causing 10,000,000 deaths.

HIV/AIDS still kills about 1,000,000 each year.

Over 360,000 drown.

120,000 people die in fires.

There are hundreds of causes of deaths which kill more people than this corona-virus ever will, which is like still under 5,000 deaths total.

And because of this 0.0008% we are destroying industries and taking entire economies into the crapper.  WTH people??????

We need to protect old people from this virus, that is it.  We do not need to shut down basketball games, schools, international travel.....this is crazy folks.

The whole point of shutting these things down is so that it doesn't spread and old people don't get it. How do you not understand that? It's not just about the basketball player or student at university or a family travelling to France. It's about who they are in contact with and how quickly it can spread

Sure.

1. No. It doesn’t mean they don’t have the power to do so. My premise is that this is an urgent and unique situation.

2. He hasn’t violated any laws.
Pretty frightening precedent you want to set. I don't disagree with you in the point that his rhetoric can be dangerous. But as a free society we have a right to listen or not. I don't believe the onus is on him to be informed, but on the public.

My point is this, I guess. If average Joe wants to get their medical crisis info from Rush and do no other research or education on the subject, well that's on them. Adults are responsible for their own adult behavior and actions. Personally if I'm talking with someone about a topic, and they use Rush as info, I automatically dismiss whatever comes next.

But yeah, pretty scary precedent.

I understand that.  But we can protect the elderly more efficiently than shutting down our economy.  Wear masks and keep the elderly isolated and let the virus runs its course through the population as we rapidly develop some vaccine.

So what you are saying is that it is okay to spread a virus around for the sake of allowing you to watch a basketball game.  The reason why they are playing games in empty arenas or not playing the games isn't because everyone is trying to be woke or trying to make sure Biden wins in November.  it is because nobody really knows who the #### has the virus.   Did anyone know that Rudy Gobert had the virus?  Did anyone knew that Tom Hanks had the virus?  Clearly nobody at CPAC knew about that one guy

If you are more concerned about your events there is an easy way to fix this.  Provide the test kits to check everyone at the events.  Then we can let the people who aren't sick do their business and make the ones who aren't stay at home.  but I am sure people will then ##### about their civil liberties being taken from us.

Always love the  "oh yeah but what about this" strategy.  So are you saying that we need to fix all the other issues AND THEN we will worry about the virus.?

Our economy will recover. It's not always about the money jon

Getting widely available test kits should be happening.  Is that the end game?  Can we resume normal activity then?    I just fail to see where there is any real strategy.  We can't shut down for 18 months while we wait for a vaccine.

Yes, if testing is reliable and widely available, those that test negative will be able to resume more normal activities.

Will it recover?  Major companies are going to go under.  Airlines, entertainment, auto, cruise industry, and anything connected to travel/tourism are going to get crushed.  Even educational institutions will be hurt.  Enormous numbers of people will be put out of work maybe triggering another housing crash.

He may get some flak for this take, but it's not entirely wrong either. Panic isn't the answer, and in some ways panic is exactly what's happening. We need to flatten the curve, practice extreme social distancing, etc. Melting down isn't the answer. Everyone can do their part without being chicken little.

No, let Rush spew his misinformation. I don't care, I don't listen to him.

I think Rush and his minions should all win an award for their insistence of this being a hoax.

A Darwin award.

This will likely kill fewer people than those will BECAUSE we are taking steps to stop it.  Short of that there is nothing to stop this thing from spreading to the majority of the world's population, which would be catastrophic death numbers.

And in case you haven't noticed, we take steps to stop those other things as well.  Do you call it "panic" when a fire is spreading and we deploy firefighters and evacuate nearby buildings?  Is the umpteen billions we spend every year on cancer overbearing panic?

Yes he is.

If cancelling basketball games and requiring self quarantine would eliminate or nearly eliminate AIDS, cardiovascular disease, cancer, etc. you don't think we would do that too?
Of course, and we should. That part of his post is wrong. But he has an overall point that's worth considering as well. Safe practices, do your part. Straight panic isn't the answer.

Its encouraging to see the majority of posters calling this absurd idea wrong.   Makes me feel better that there aren't more people like Tim out there wanting to shred the constitution because of a difference of opinion.

Whew

Well of course. But I wouldn't call cancelling sporting events or moving to online classes as straight up panic
The DOW is down like 8% this morning.  There is panic in the air.  Everyday is a 5% move, which a historically large move happening everyday.

So how do you recommend convincing people that this virus is no big deal and that we should just let people do things like normal.

We should eliminate McDonald's and other fat-fast food chains to fight obesity.  That would probably save a millions lives, or at least significantly prolong them.

You take reasonable precautions and you continue to live your life.   There is a line between being no big deal and outright panic which needs to be taken.  We are way too close to outright panic right now.

Sounds like you have a lot of expertise on transmissible diseases.

What are your suggestions for public health policy?

Cliff notes on what has Rush said?
Hillary Clinton killed rueben foster while Barak Obama was making tik tok videos in a madrassa which caused Vladimir Putin to unleash Corona on the chicoms at the beheast of hunter Biden so his father could over take St Donald the Magnificent in the upcoming election which will lead to world wide socialism and the end of the world as we know it.  Rush says he has all this on good authority.  Good. Authority.

Where does George Soros fit into all of this?

Yes everyone disagrees with me. But your notion that what I suggested shreds the Constitution suggests to me that you may need to read up a little more on the Constitution.

There is a line where damage to the economy will actually lead to more deaths. I don't know where that line is specifically, but less money available for charity, more unemployed, more people cutting corners or turning to crime, etc all has a net effect on the death rate of this country.

Unfortunately people that would even attempt to have such discussions would probably be shouted down.

I am old enough to remember when the WHO criticized Trump(partially based on economic hardship concerns) for the chinese travel ban.

I admit that Trump was right with the Chinese travel ban, which bought us time to prepare and come up with a solid strategy on how to handle this.  Unfortunately he and his administration pissed away that time by downplaying it and not believing it would ever reach crisis levels in the USA.   We are paying the price for that miscalculation now and it is going to get a lot worse before it "miraculously disappears".

Even the most die-hard Trump fan can admit that, right?

I wasnt trying to argue Trump was all over this thing for prevention. That is obviously an absurd position.

I was simply trying to point out how WHO officials early on made the point that travel bans have poor economic results and that they can lead to worse consequences.

Limbaugh, Trump and other symptoms like them have a function. That people are susceptible to their nonsense indicates that we still have a lot of work to do in this country in terms of enhancing the education levels, ability to process information, and critical thinking skills of a large number of people in the U.S. Those are the solutions to these kinds of problems, not censorship. Some like to denigrate liberal arts education that doesn't lead directly to some monetarily rewarding vocation - but much of the value of attempting to achieve a liberal arts degree is development of these tools, which is of value to society as a whole.

There is no way i would ever take any advice from you on what I should or should not read up on.  Dude..Seriously.

Rush should stay on the air, but I, for one, am not listening to his ignorant BS.

And to those who feel that this should just run its course, the issue isn't how many old and infirm people will die over the course of 2020 (love the compassion BTW), it's what do we do when all of these people, young and old, get sick at the same time?  We don't have the capacity to deal with an all at once crush on hospitals, clinics, and health facilities, and once our health workers get sick, we don't have the professionals needed to treat those who are really, really sick.  What about existing patients with other health issues?  Do we just cut them loose?  This crush on health services will lead to turning away gravely-ill patients because there is simply no infrastructure left to take care of them, which is where they are in China and Italy.  Turning those people away just exacerbates the crisis, and leaves no option other than shutting everything down and clearing the streets.  THAT is the crisis we are trying to avoid.

Sorry I don’t understand.
I was making a light-hearted reference to Office Space where a character creates a "jump to conclusions mat," which he thinks is a good idea, but everybody else tells him it's not.

The better analogy here is chess. I'm sure you recall our friendly match and you just dominating me despite us being of reasonable intelligence and me having at least some understanding of the game. However, my fundamental misunderstanding of the game's more advanced nuances put me in a position where I didn't stand a chance against an experienced player like you.

Similarly, on the issue of constitutional law, you are me playing chess.
