SNL is Friggin' Horrible! Except when Timberlake is hosting. (1 Viewer)

I watched all ~9-10 hours of 50th anniversary content (music special, concert, and show) and enjoyed it all. Great job SNL!
For reference, I started watching late 80's / early 90's.
Going to reup my efforts to try and get tickets to see a live show. I've tried the lottery on and off over the years with no luck.

We also watched pretty much everything SNL50 related over the past month, as well as the Saturday Night movie on Netflix.

I started watching in middle school in the mid-80s with the Lovitz, Miller, Carvey, Hartman, Hooks, Jackson, Nealon cast, which then led in to the Myers, Farley, Meadows, Rock, Sandler, Schneider, Spade and that group when I was in HS and college.

We started renting the "Best of" VHS tapes at Blockbuster during those days, and that's when I was exposed to those first couple of years (especially Chevy), Eddie, etc.

I've watched off-and-on over the past couple of decades, but pretty consistently for the last 10 years or so.

It's definitely a bucket list thing for me to attend a taping, although I've never looked into it.

Somewhere in here we should probably talk about the "Fly on the Wall" podcast. And the reason I bring it up is because of how sorry I am that it isn't better than it is. Awesome concept, but Carvey isn't a natural interviewer despite how easy it is to root for him, and Spade just sucks at being funny.
I don’t really agree in spade, but I do agree on carvey and I do wish that they were better at it. The best interviewers are basically when the guest does most of the heavy lifting, like ego nwodim or Molly shannon

I know comedy is subjective but Shane Gillis is painfully unfunny.

And I've seen all over social media from people who thought it was one of the funniest episodes in years.

I fall somewhere in the middle. It was definitely an edgier show than is typical, leaning into his stuff (I assume, I don't think I've ever seen any of his standup).

Couplabeers is getting all the buzz, but the news segment was the funniest thing to me.

I was speaking about his monolog. The skits were fine.

Yeah I would agree with that. In fact I was surprised how good the show was after how little I laughed during the monologue.

Somewhere in here? How about the post just above this one?

The Spanish to English date bar argument sketch was also a good one.

Bowen Yang p hound sketch was great too. Ok they got this thing back on track.

Really?
I'd like to change my opinion from painfully unfunny to painfully unfunny and horribly outdated.

Guys like beer. Wow.

How bout this one, better beer commercial?

MOP, you're mixing standup comedians in with SNL skits. Gillis' monologue was absolutely terrible. I don't know much about the guy except that he was fired by SNL after 5 days for ... something. Also, he's painfully unfunny.

W/r/t SNL, sometimes skits miss the mark. Take the first one (couplabeers). I don't find it funny. As I stated in the original post, comedy is subjective. You liked it. I didn't.

The other skit with Bill Burr hit the mark for me. It probably helps that I find Burr's stand up hilarious. Gillis? Not so much.

Weekend Update where they read each other's jokes was hilarious. I've taken to watching the to YouTube clips rather than sitting through the whole episode and I've enjoyed that this season, because it's not such a big time investment on my part.

Huge Burr fan myself, never actually listened to a full set of Gillis stand up. From the audience that fills his shows (he's popular) I can sorta fill in the blanks
I didn't think his appearance was that bad and to be honest I don't watch much SNL these days, tune in for someone like Bill Burr or perhaps a musical guest here and there

The SNL show has been unfunny for a long time, that's my opinion and others feel different. I watched SNL all thru the 90s so i'm jaded, that was a pretty golden age of talent for that show not seen since its early days in the 70s.

Side Story: I visited NYC-St Pattys Day weekend and we made an effort to go to the Black Pussycat and the other comedy venues all connected there.
There were 4-5 stand ups and Chris Redd was the headliner but he wasn't nearly as good as some of the no names we saw including a black lady with a shaved head, big earrings and an attitude from hell, somehow Mrs and I were sitting dead center about 3 rows back and this woman had me in stitches and just based on appearance I would not have guessed she would be making me laugh so hard. She was just a fire ball and totally in her element there in NYC, she owned that stage

We used to live in los Angeles '00-'08 and we would go to all of the big comedy clubs in Hollywood and West LA, saw Dane Cook in a very small club right before he got big almost front row, my wife and I laughed so hard I thought they were gonna make us leave except most were laughing just as hard and this was in a small room. Rodney Dangerfield came on after in an unannounced in a bath robe with sheets of jokes to read and bounce off the crowd, hilarious.

I get a little tired of the racial stuff but like Colin and Che’s relationship enough to get past it

I missed the previous joke about the roast beef so had to go find it. Holy ****! :lmao:
