Snowmageddon 2013 (1 Viewer)

Getting ready to snowblow this crap. How much of a #### am I if I don't help my neighbor out? Poor sap only has a shovel.
you are a d bag if you don't lend a little help. How much is up to you. I do my immediate neighbors sidewalks but leave the driveways to them. If I knock out a guys driveway opening (where the plow buildup happens) I don't expect anything but I'm always happy to find a case of beer waiting for me. Be a good neighbor, we are all in this together.

:goodposting:Our last snow I was out there shoveling away. Neighbor owns a construction business. He drives over in a bobcat and waves me aside. My hours long job was done in about 5 minutes.

I kind of agree with this. Its a great bonding experience

I am superjealous -- that snow sounds awesome.chicago only gets ##### snows.one of the best parts of a blizzard like that is when everybody helps each other out -- I'll always dig out an extra car, or shovel some walkway, or something.

If they live in the northeast and don't have a snowblower, that's their own fault. Two exceptions.....if they're elderly or young, you're both single and something you want to get with, then I would help.
I share a snowblower with my dad who is a few blocks away. SOB has it and the roads are impassable. So I'm stuck with the shovel for now. Oh we'll, I'd rather he have it today. I'll survive.

Apparently you missed the 26 inches 2 years ago.

I've never seen anything like I'm seeing in Suffolk County Long Island. A WCBS news reporter drove their loaded SUV out east on long island and he got to exit 64 (where lets say the eastern edge is Exit 1, 64 miles away...They couldn't go any further. There are basically two main arteries out there and the roads are blocked by snow AND abandoned cars. Its friggin lnsane!

Yeah, that was from weatherboy: "This is a recent picture from Route 25 on Long Island (near Wal-mart) by Riverheard"

Love this one. I remember a huge storm in 1983 when I would have been about his age and size and walking next to snow that was over my head by the time you account for the banks. Its still the "gold standard" in my memory even though we've had bigger snows. When you're old enough to be aware and remember, its not something you'll forget! Great pic!
 Smack....where in Suffolk are you? I'm in Selden, right by Bald Hill.

They kept that wal-mart in middle island open and all those people stayed there until emergency crews could come get them. I hate Wal-mart, but it was a great thing that store did. Newsday has a story about it. My parents just called and they said a guy spent the night in his car near their house. They saw him in the car when they went walking. They brought him in, gave him coffee and food until someone met him to take him home. Crazy ?!?! Can't imagine what I would do if I was stuck like that

I'm actually in Jerz, I'm watching safely in my 13.5 inches. I go to Suffolk for work though so I'm familiar with it. How are you holding up?

Short of an emergency what compels people to try to go out after days of warnings that the area was going to get pounded? What are these people thinking? Three inches an hour? No problem, I got this!

I would hope employers use a little more common sense and are cooler about an early dismissal next time. I'm sure many of these people are stranded senselessly and needlessly. If you went out joyriding in this, then you get what was coming to you, but it seems like most people were just trying to get home.

All due respect to Michigan, there's something adjacent to the northeast states called the Atlantic Ocean, that occasionally provides monumental amounts of moisture, resulting in big snowfalls. When I looked up the top 10 biggest snowstorms in Detroit history, it's actually kind of funny compared to what falls in the northeast:24.5 inches April 6, 188619.3 inches December 1 – 2, 1974Tie: 14.0 inches March 4 – 5, 1900 and February 28 - March 1, 1900 13.8 inches December 18 – 19, 192912.8 inches February 12 – 13, 189412.6 inches February 19, 1908 12.5 inches January 31 - February 1, 1881Tie: 12.3 inches on February 9, 1911 and March 3 – 4, 189512.2 inches January 22-23, 200512.1 inches January 13-14, 1927Meanwhile, tonight will be Boston's third storm of more than 22 inches in less than 10 years.
:shrug:Then you think they'd be able to handle it and not act like crazy people. New Yorkers freak out more about 12" of snowfall than Minnesotans do because of 5' drifts over the highway.FWIW, NYC and the surrounding areas average about 25-30" of snow per year. Minneapolis averages about double that. Upstate New York gets a lot of snow. Massachusetts gets a decent bit of snow. Maine gets a ####-ton of snow.New York metro is mid-Atlantic, not Northeast.
One of the issues with this storm (and others) is that if this was Summer or Fall, they'd be talking about the storm as a hurricane. Most of the storms in the mid-west don't coincide with 50-60 MPH winds. The drifting with this storm due to the winds is nasty, and the winds are causing a large portion of the power outages. :2cents:

We just got power on which is great as we were about ready to head to my wife's cousins place. The cousin is great but she lives with such a DBag I would rather rough it out here but would need to go because of the kids. While it is only February. I've taking the early lead for Neighbor of the Year. Cleared out 3 other driveways after my own this morning. Two of the three I don't even know their names...lol. Had to do it though, couldn't let anyone try to clear all this with just shovels.Time to bust out the Lagavulin 16

All good--thanks. Just snow, stay home, take it slow, lots of hot coco and use common sense.

Gonna be a lotta babies born up there in about nine months!.....When you have power/heat/food/alcohol......that type of weather is great!

Are you okay? Rhodies got hit by some intense snow bands. One county had 12 inches in 90 minutes. :o

Got about 26". Sucks balls. Snow blower did the trick.Thanks.

This is so foreign to me. How do the cars get stuck on the roads? I've driven through blizzards before but it was always just slow down and push through. What causes the drivers to stop? Again, this is not something I really deal with. I mean no disrespect and wish you guys good luck.

Much better than Long Island, last time I checked.

reading a reply to the pic of the stuck cars on LI, there's a hill and two buses got stuck. All the cars were unable to move.

It's ice that usually causes the big problems, not so much the snow. Freezing rain can be especially brutal. I have seen roads that have become sheets of ice... entirely skatable if you had ice skates. It's really easy to get stuck in that, especially if your car slides off the road entirely. In snow, such as we have here, they don't want anyone on the roads because the roads were very narrow because of the snow. The plows need time to widen the roads and cars just get in the way. And on the highways, snow makes for lots of accidents because speeds are higher, and a little slipping can result in someone spinning out and sliding off the road or into other cars, resulting in multi-car pileups. Light cars and deep snow don't do so well together, either. If you drive a heavy vehicle, you're going to have an easier time in the snow. But with today's lightweight, fuel-efficient subcompacts and compact cars, when those get out into any kind of snow, watch out... they can slip and slide a lot more than a heavier vehicle will and that can result in a multi-car accident if and when the driver loses control. My wife drives a Honda Civic and I won't let my wife drive if it's even threatening snow. I've told her more than once she has enough problems on dry roads under ideal conditions. She stayed home all day Friday. They have now salted the main roads pretty well, making them clear during the day. But all that salt makes for wet roads that can freeze overnight when temperatures drop. That can make for very icy roads in the morning until they put some more salt down. Finally, I have seen ice become created by long lines of cars having come to a standstill... the exhaust can melt the fallen snow, then once the cars roll forward a little bit, that water freezes. I have seen hills become impassable because of this kind of phenomenon.

Anything over a foot and cars don't really even have the ground clearance to make it through a wet snow. Even if they started earlier when there was less snow, all the wind could easily pile up drifts high enough to strand a car. And once one car is stuck in the middle of the road, everyone else is screwed too. You have to slow down to get around them if it's even possible with opposing traffic, and slowing down just makes it more likely you'll get stuck. And frankly, most people over-estimate their driving skills and their vehicle's abilities. It's amazing how many pickup trucks I see every winter in a ditch or stuck because the guy driving it either doesn't have 4WD, doesn't have it engaged, or has no weight in the bed of the truck and thus no traction back there anyway. And yet the moron thought he could shoot down the highway at 70 MPH on a thin sheet of ice and 6 inches of snow on the road simply because he has a truck. Same with women driving SUVs. Multiple times I've been passed by a woman in a Ford Explorer or similar flying down the highway in the snow while talking on her cellphone, only to see her spun out in the median a few miles down the road. People think that having an SUV makes them impervious to the elements. When you get to 2+ feet, you're looking at an incredibly small number of vehicles that can traverse that. You need 4WD, a high ground clearance, power and enough weight in the vehicle to gain traction. Even then, only a skilled driver with experience has a chance.

Thanks for the responses. When it snowed last month I was seeing people hauling ### when the roads were slippery and visibility was terrible. So in your situations I can only imagine how bad it must be. And the ice sheets as well as clearance issues make sense as well.

I kind of agree with this. Its a great bonding experience
I agree. And, you never know when you might need a hand or to dip in the well of neighbor karma.
I ended up doing the neighborly thing and helped him. I kind of knew I was going to end up doing it and glad I did because I'd feel awfully guilty now. Weird thing is that I asked him if he wanted to run it and he said he didn't know how (I got the drift that he didn't want to learn), but weird because he grew up in Buffalo. Don't they get a metric ton of snow up there and he never used a snow blower? Either way, he was very gracious and hopefully I earned some karma to counter my sins.

4 hours of shoveling. I felt like I was playing with house money not replacing my old blower but my luck finally ran out. The drifts were insane in my driveway. Snow totally covered our Maxima & was up to the roof of the Highlander. Only the Explorer wasn't really buried. This storm ruined a perfect winter.and the B's are canceled tonight :hot:

That was Cranston last night during the Thundersnow. The wind was nuts too. I still haven't brushed off my cars or cleared my driveway yet. Hope everyone is ok.

Got about 26".
Jealous. Just started snowing tonight where I live in MN and we're expecting only about 9-10" over the next day or two. Still a nice amount for snowmobiling and sledding. I always thought it was fun to snowblow neighbors driveways. Using snow blowers is fun! I have a 50" snowblower on the front of my Kubota utility tractor now as my driveway is 3/8 of a mile. Probably go sledding with the kids tomorrow. We have a sweet hill at our house. Anyone else sledding?

Snow blowing is great! It's looking at the bastage taking up valuable space in your garage/shed the other 360+ days a year that sucks here in the northeast

I have not ventured outside yet, only looked from the window, but it seems not a single plow has come down my block since the snow began friday night. Seems to be a huge problem in Suffolk County LI this storm. Normally I support these guys, they work crazy hours when the stuff starts falling, and I heard b/c of the amount of snow down and a lot of abandoned cars on the road is making it tougher. But to not see even a single plow is crazy right now. And I live on one of the hilliest parts of long island (Bald hill if you are familiar—the 7 sisters as its known b/c of its 7 crazy hills on one road) and I would have thought this area would be somewhere near their priority.
