This travel ban shall not apply to the following.... travel to support business operations that provide critical services to the public, including gasoline stations, food stores and hardware stores
So if travel is banned, who will be their customers?

14" here overnight... no hysteria.. no panic.. it's winter in Michigan.Ya'll are a bunch of sissies...
:goodposting: The reaction we're having here over a little snow is what I remember when I was going to school in Washington DC back in the 1970's. Everything would shut down over a couple inches of snow. Road maintenance consisted of a couple of minority workers with shovels in the back of a dumptruck full of sand.

Public workers such as police, fire, snowplow drivers, and the like, I would imagine. Still, it's going to be hard to get a police cruiser through a snowdrift.

People with feet?
Hmmm.... sounds like a good weekend for Peapod. Are their delivery guys supposed to be tipped or do they get paid a fair wage to begin with?

The bolded gets to why it's usually silly for people in places like Michigan to make fun of people in more southern states for freaking out over snow. When you regularly get a ton of snow, as you prseumably do in Michigan, you've got the infrastructure in place to deal with it efficiently, everyone has a lot of experience driving in it, etc. Meanwhile, the same exact amount of snowfall elsewhere is a once in fifty years kind of occurrence. It doesn't make them "sissies" because they're not prepared with the resources to deal with it as effectively.

I'd assume people in Michigan also have snow tires and/or chains. Which is not the case for most anyone here.

Exactly. A foot or more of snow really is a bigger deal for people in, say, NJ than it is for people in MI, it's not all just overreaction.

Crisis=opportunity. Is this the government takeover Jose C has warned us about? I wait for his impending post.

When I lived in Michigan, snow chains were illegal. I think snow tires were okay, though.Still, New England gets quite a bit of snow, so they should be all right.

And this guy is talking about Western or Northern Michigan. In SE Michigan, if we get 14 inches, that would shut a lot down.

Once again Drudge mocks Global Warming because of historic snow, you see, which is cold. (Look at the front page). So stupid. Record global temperatures just about every year and signs of climate change everywhere, but Drudge will always minimize based on temperature on one event. Uggghh.
Who the hell pays attention to Drudge? How is he at all relevant?
Personally, since the planet is still apparently coming out of the last Ice Age, geologically speaking, wouldn't it make sense that the earth is going to see an increase in temperature? Besides, weather changes, so nobody should be surprised.
Oh good. You're back.

 Chains not allowed. Regular tires. NJ/NY gets as much snow as us...

I wasn't specifically referring to this storm with that comment. But in any case, it just comes off as dumb when people say things like, "14 inches of snow is no big deal, we get that all the time in Michigan." Well no ####, that's precisely why it's no big deal for people in Michigan.

playin's talking smack...there is plenty of hysteria in the Midwest when big snowstorms hit. Here in WI we had about 15 inches a week before Christmas and everything shut down and the weatherman were going ballistic with all of their fancy doppler radar systems and snowfall forcasting models. I worked in a grocery store in college and I absolutely dreaded the day before a big snowstorm...you'd swear the roads were going to be closed for weeks the way some people reacted.

My comment was geared more towards the hysteria the media is creating concerning a snowstorm... I would assume New England gets quite a bit of snow in the Winter.. I must be wrong.. Carry on with the panic...

Some years we get a lot of snow and some we don't. Last year was unusually light. And this year, so far, the only time I had to start the snowblower was when we returned from Stowe after Christmas vacation. That said, people around here are really quick to push the panic button over stuff like this. And it's worse if you actually do have a heavy 4WD vehicle with good tires that is capable of maneuvering in snow and then have to deal with the abundance of light cars that slip and slide but whose drivers are accustomed to driving in the high speed lane every day, so they feel perfectly justified in driving down highway at 35mph today when yesterday they were going 85mph and flipping everyone else the finger as they passed.

That's what I don't get either - it's a big storm, but we get one of these every few years (I'm in NY's Hudson Valley, about 80 mi north of NYC). We'll deal with it just fine.

I'm confused as well. I think in the past I denied climate change or something, and my statement may have brought that up again. Don't worry, I know climate change happens. I'd be stupid to try and deny the evidence presented. I'm a little fuzzy on just how much of it is caused by humans, that's all. Still, we're clogging up the thread with an unnecessary diversion. Some of you have only 13 minutes as of this posting to get off the roads.

Not sure I believe all of this: A strong Alberta clipper associated with an intense polar jet moving southeast out of Canada will merge later today with a monster coastal storm associated with a powerful sub tropical jet. The phase is expected to occur off the NC/VA coast today, which will create a Superstorm. Massive snow bands, with winds well over 60mph, near 100mph in some areas, will create zero visibility and huge snow drifts. Boston is expected to see over 30in, and some places inland in CT could exceed 48in. NYC could possibly see a foot or more, and Philly can expect maybe 6-8in if the storm track continues.

Boston is going to get 20-30 inches of snow. It will be impossible to measure exactly how much, because of the winds gusting up to 60 mph that will be blowing it everywhere.Much of southern New England will be totally shut down tomorrow. People who lose power might be without heat for days. This is a much different situation than schools opening two hours late because of a dusting of snow. It has a very good chance of being both the biggest total storm snowfall and the biggest 24-hour snowfall in the history of Boston.Wish I could be there - at some point tonight, the snowfall rates are going to be way over 2" per hour. Enjoy!

That's some truth and some lunacy. The phase has already happened - call it a noreaster or call it Superstorm. There will not be winds near 100 mph, and only the gusts will get near 60 mph. Also, very unlikely that anyone gets close to 48 inches. Boston could get near 30, though.Fascinating, detailed look at the storm's science here: http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/capital-weather-gang/post/northeast-blizzard-the-science-behind-the-storm/2013/02/08/38882a84-7217-11e2-8b8d-e0b59a1b8e2a_blog.html

The 100mph and 48" are the two I have issue with.

14" here overnight... no hysteria.. no panic.. it's winter in Michigan.

Ya'll are a bunch of sissies...
:goodposting: The reaction we're having here over a little snow is what I remember when I was going to school in Washington DC back in the 1970's. Everything would shut down over a couple inches of snow. Road maintenance consisted of a couple of minority workers with shovels in the back of a dumptruck full of sand.
Did States in the Northeast migrate South??
I wasn't specifically referring to this storm with that comment. But in any case, it just comes off as dumb when people say things like, "14 inches of snow is no big deal, we get that all the time in Michigan." Well no ####, that's precisely why it's no big deal for people in Michigan.
Honestly who`s panicking besides the media trying to create a stir so people stay tuned. Its a big snow storm ,we from new england dont really panic,we get prepared.
That's what I don't get either - it's a big storm, but we get one of these every few years (I'm in NY's Hudson Valley, about 80 mi north of NYC). We'll deal with it just fine.
People along the 95 corridor from Philly to RI DON'T deal with these every few years. And most don't prepare well. Their lack of preparation makes it worse for everyone else...

Just flipped over to the Weather Channel from the superior local coverage primarily because I want to see where Jim Cantore makes his appearance. Roof of the Hancock Tower? Shores of Chatham? Revere seawall?

Power has already flickered twice and went out for a couple minutes. Went on a mad dash to find the LED lights I had for the hurricane and couldn't find them anywhere. Then I remembered I gave them to a friend after my power came back on and never thought to get them back. Mother####.Really no idea what I'll do if it goes out for good. :kicksrock:In the Hamptons, btw...I think we're gonna get killt.

Oof. Good luck out there GB. Power staying solid here so far but the snow is sticking like crazy to everything (trees and power lines). Getting a little concerned about that.

Just made it home. Only open is Chinese takeout joints & small indie liquor stores. I was shocked to see Kappy's in Medford closed.

I think this makes it official. New York is not Northeast. It's Mid-Atlantic. If you live in an area that has "North" anywhere in the region, you can't freak the #### out this much about some snow.
All due respect to Michigan, there's something adjacent to the northeast states called the Atlantic Ocean, that occasionally provides monumental amounts of moisture, resulting in big snowfalls. When I looked up the top 10 biggest snowstorms in Detroit history, it's actually kind of funny compared to what falls in the northeast:

24.5 inches April 6, 1886

19.3 inches December 1 – 2, 1974

Tie: 14.0 inches March 4 – 5, 1900 and February 28 - March 1, 1900

13.8 inches December 18 – 19, 1929

12.8 inches February 12 – 13, 1894

12.6 inches February 19, 1908

12.5 inches January 31 - February 1, 1881

Tie: 12.3 inches on February 9, 1911 and March 3 – 4, 1895

12.2 inches January 22-23, 2005

12.1 inches January 13-14, 1927

Meanwhile, tonight will be Boston's third storm of more than 22 inches in less than 10 years.
