Snowmageddon 2022 (2 Viewers)

We're getting hit by this storm too, not as bad though. Projected totals say 8-14 inches over this evening and overnight. It's been snowing pretty heavily since like 7 PM, and the roads were getting pretty bad on my SB Halftime drive home. Gonna be a ##### to get to work tomorrow, I can see it now.

Lots of food places are pissed about today, I bet. Pizza delivery, sandwich delivery, grocery stores and bars lost lots of business today. No ones fault but this snow storm kept plenty of people home, not spending money on this traditional money spending day.

Incredible arctic boundary is close but the storm looks to cut to Ohio surging warm air north. Lack of blocking sucks this winter. Front end dump of 3" for our area before ice and cold rain.
Solid call 2 days out. Congrats guys up north it's just not our winter this year.

Between 8.5-10 inches overnight with another 3-6 expected until 4 PM today. Snow still going strong with wind chills ranging from -10 to 5 for the rest of the day through the afternoon.

I got stuck in the street outside my house and had to slam it into reverse-then-drive a couple times to get going. People weren't driving like maniacs though, my actual commute was only 20 minutes compared to the usual 12. Of course, that ignores the 8 minutes trying to get my car out of the driveway. Pretty ugly commute though. Saw 2 stranded buses, 1 stranded delivery truck, and one guy stuck in a snow drift trying to make a turn onto a busy street, holding up traffic.

Mostly sleet/ice/slush in West/Centran NJ. I was actually going to go into the office up near Madison until people started e-mailing like crazy saying the roads were awful. I think north of us it's a lot worse. When your boss and the CFO both say "Stay at home," then I'll gladly stay at home.

Flash freeze will be the big concern today. Thursday storm still a possibility, as well as the early one next week. Out of the office today, so won't be on here much.

4 of the top 5 here .

This one wasn't as bad as that 2011 one (or last year). In 2011, the snow was higher than my snow blower's opening. Sucked.

The big casualty on this storm is my mailbox which got annhilated by a plow. I don't mind replacing it so much, but I just don't know when I'll be able to do that.

REALLY messy AM up on the North Shore of LI, snow then a ton of sleet and freezing rain made for treacherous walking to the car and driving. Thank god landlord is responsible for shovelling cause this was a #####.

Things got progressively better (more wet, less Ice) even 2-3 miles south. Looking good for my flight to LA though as it's just rain here at JFK

Could very well be freezing rain.

I had a certain expectation when I walked out to the driveway this morning and that was not it. 5-8" was the canned report yesterday, but there had to be more than a foot out there.

Anyway, 2 hours shoveling to get my car out and into work. Get here, check email, voice mail, brief team meeting, get back to desk and...we're closed, go home.

Oof.

Worst snow day ever.

And even if it's not on the ground, it could be on the climb out...ice and flying is nothing to joke about.

I'm worried about the big freeze on the south shore. There were two inches of water or so around my car this morning. Worried the wife will just let it sit until she has to pick me up and we'll have a Civic hubcap deep in ice.

I was coming here to update that its been snowing like nuts in R.I. for hours but the T.U. news just threw me for a loop. Damn.

The Weather Channel app was actually pretty accurate on the NYC snow last week.

Let's see how it is this time.

Calling for:

Snow at 8pm, turning to rain at 5am, and back to snow tomorrow at 4pm until 7pm.

Total - 3-5 inches.
Pretty accurate again. Rain just turned back to snow.

We look to be out of the snow now. 14.1" at the weather station nearest to my house. Looking at -15 wind chills tonight and then another 4-8 inches of snow tomorrow night thru Thursday. Cool. Have I mentioned how much I love winter?

Well, it turned to rain for a bit in Central/West Jersey. I just went out to clear out what was slush this AM. It's now semi-hard and icing up quickly. If it gets into the single-digits tonight, or mid teens even, anybody who didn't shovel their driveway is basically going to have a 4" ice block to drive over. My snow blower chopped it up and threw it, but it was heavy and hard enough to rip my chute off, so I had to fix that. Not fun stuff to work with. Have to venture out to get the kid from daycare in a few. Hope the roads are better than our cul de sac.

Do you all have 4x4's? This sounds miserable....I walk to and from work, can't imagine doing that in your weather...

No school again tomorrow. That's either four or five snow days in Cranston R.I. over the last eight days. Crazy.

No but I finally bought an AWD vehicle. Better to be sure. Thing is in snowy climates they have these big trucks with shovels on the front called plows that move all the snow off the road so you can drive on them. I will say this though - the guys in RWD cars like BMW, the entire Dodge lineup etc. that I simply don't understand.

We've had about 4 feet of snow in the past week. More snow is predicted for Wed. thru Fri. The snowbanks are HUGE, and the driveway plow guys are running out of room to put the stuff.

That's always my problem. I don't mind snow and even like shoveling but at a point it gets so hard to find where to put it. Piles can only go so high.

I had an all wheel drive car with all-season tires, and it wasn't as good in the snow as my rear wheel drive with snow tires. Having a set of dedicated snow tires makes an incredible difference over all season tires in the snow.

Yup. My Mustang had less control then one of those round, plastic saucer sleds.

Looks like the Thursday storm is off the table for my area. Maybe a coating or two. Some of the models are loving Sunday night into Monday. HUGE snow totals! Of course, after the past two swings and misses, I'm going to hold back on my excitement for now. There will be cold in place, and it looks like we could have blocking, so the chance is definitely there. If this would have been the first storm of the season, I'd be much more amped over it. But as I said, after being burned twice, it's hard not to be a little gunshy this time around.

The pattern continues to look like it'll be active until the end of February. Hopefully one of these hits.

:goodposting:

Snow tires are the single greatest thing you can do for your car's traction in the snow. Period. AWD will help your car get grip where there is limited traction, but snow tires will increase the amount of traction you actually have. The softer rubber compound, and the siping help you get grip on snow and ice. Obviously having both is the ideal, but dedicated snow tires are noticeably better than even the proverbial "all season" tires in the snow. I have all-season on my LR2 right now...I used to have snow tires. I'm considerably less confident about how it performs in the snow than I was when I had my snows.

Huge snow totals for where? Fluffy clipper powder?
PA, NJ, NYC, S NE.

Again, these are just model projections and are very rarely ever right. But they give you an idea of how strong a storm is and the track it'll take. Model output has a lot of places in the 1-2 feet range, and that's not taking into account the higher snow ratios that would occur.

I've seen forecasts of snow for Sunday into Monday for here in NoVA, but no expectations, I guess it's too far out.

Got 10" of the fluffy stuff on the North Shore here on The Island. On top of ice. After chopping my Jeep Liberty (just got it in November) out of it's icy sarcophagus at work, I arrived home to find that the plows hadn't yet made their pass through my neighborhood. This Jeep is sporting 17" rims and low profile- decidedly NOT all season radials- tires, yet I passed all of the cars parked at the bottom of my block and breezed up the hill to my house. First tracks. I'm impressed.

So glad that I haven't "managed*" to move my 2000 Isuzu Trooper yet. Otherwise I'd be sliding around in my wife's Scion Xb while she drove this baby. That would make for a looong winter.

(* I pulled the add off craigslist...)
